Chapter 24: THE GRAND DUKE RETURNS

RAIGORO’S POV

Three days after Raigoro rode out of Blackharrow, Daric’s report reached him before dawn.

The final page stayed with him after he folded the rest away.

THE DUCHESS ATTEMPTED TO CALL A WARNING AND PRODUCED NO SOUND.

He read the line twice.

Then he put the report beside the ward maps.

The temporary line was holding, but relief command had not yet arrived, replacement wardstone was still moving north, and two injured soldiers had not been cleared to travel.

Raigoro wanted answers from Blackharrow. Until someone else held the temporary line, the boundary remained his.

He spent the morning confirming the handover, reviewing the patrol rotations, and making certain the temporary line could hold without him. Once relief command arrived, the returning unit rode south.

They stopped that night at a military post long enough to rest the men and horses, then resumed before dawn.

The following morning, he returned to Blackharrow with every soldier who had left with him. Two required help dismounting.

He considered that an acceptable result.

The damaged beacon station had been abandoned, the missing patrol recovered, and a temporary ward line established on stronger ground. What Raigoro still lacked was an explanation for why the old one had failed.

They had found no sabotage. The Ashen boundary itself had weakened.

Raigoro dismounted in the lower military court. A stable hand took his reins.

Daric reached him before he had finished removing his gloves.

"You look terrible," Daric said.

"So does the eastern ward."

"Which one outranks the other?"

"The ward."

"Command Terrace?"

"Yes."

They left the lower military court and climbed through the secured levels of the Citadel.

The military debrief in the operational war room took less than an hour.

Raigoro reviewed the latest patrol rotations, signed the temporary boundary order, approved replacement wardstone from the central reserve, and sent two engineers back north with instructions to inspect every beacon along the affected ward section.

Only after the frontier had been dealt with did Daric place the full household report on the table.

"The details behind my courier."

Raigoro opened it.

"Injuries?"

"Six treated for smoke. Three burns. One broken wrist. No deaths."

Daric placed another page beneath it.

"There was also a household council before the gathering."

Raigoro looked up.

"Why was she there?"

"Because you were gone, and the household needed decisions."

"Why her?"

Daric answered after a moment.

"The council expected Princess Selena Valence to know what to do. She did not."

Raigoro waited.

"She knew almost none of the customs," Daric continued. "She could barely enter the discussion because everyone spoke faster than she could write. So she changed the discussion instead."

"How?"

"She made them stop long enough to answer her questions."

That sounded more useful than pretending expertise she did not possess.

"What did she decide?"

"To wait for your field report before canceling anything. Once the report confirmed you would remain north, she separated the parts of the gathering that required you from the parts that did not."

Raigoro looked at the papers.

"Authority?"

"She stayed inside it."

Daric slid one page across the table. "That is the part I thought you would care about."

Raigoro read the clerk’s summary. His wife had postponed Raigoro’s territorial audiences, left military matters alone, and continued the household gathering because the food, rooms, staff, travel, and other costs had already been committed.

Nothing in the decision required her to know Blackharrow better than she did. It required her to ask what had already been spent and who actually needed Raigoro present.

"Did anyone have to stop her from using my absence?"

"No."

"Did she ask for access outside the household?"

"No."

"Make promises in my name?"

"No."

No one had needed to stop her.

Odran had sent a bride north beneath a growing pile of concealed facts. If she had intended to use the marriage as access to Blackharrow, Raigoro’s absence had given her room to try.

Instead, she had spent it identifying where her authority ended.

Daric opened the next report.

"The reception was less comfortable."

"Mara Toren."

"Yes."

Raigoro had expected that name eventually.

"She refused the formal welcome. The steward moved to intervene. Your wife stopped him."

"What did she do?"

"Wrote, Thank you for coming."

Raigoro looked at Daric.

"That was all?"

"Yes."

No defense of Valence. No demand that a widow perform courtesy for the daughter of the king who had failed Third Watch. No attempt to use rank to make the room kinder to her.

Daric tapped another statement. "Hallen Brey challenged her too. She answered what she could and did not claim that one answer should repair anything."

Raigoro let that settle beside the council report.

His wife had been given authority and looked first for its limits. She had faced resentment without demanding that anyone put it aside.

Neither fact told him who she was.

They told him what she did when Odran was no longer there to decide for her.

He returned to the fire report.

The engineers had confirmed structural failure at the brazier anchor. They had found no tool marks, black resin, or other evidence of sabotage.

"The Duchess noticed the danger before the brazier fell," Daric continued. "She opened the east service passage during the evacuation."

Raigoro turned to the witness statements.

Daric did the same.

"The final finding in my courier holds. Four independent witnesses. The Duchess attempted to call a warning. No sound."

"All four reliable?"

"Independent of one another. Two were close enough to hear after the music stopped."

Raigoro returned to the witness statements.

On the Southern road, he had left room for the possibility that his wife simply refused to speak to him. He had no reason then to assume Valence had concealed a physical condition when refusal explained the same behavior with fewer assumptions.

That explanation no longer fit what had happened in the great hall.

A child had been beneath falling iron, and she had tried to warn him without producing a sound.

What Raigoro did not know was when that condition had begun.

If it had existed before the marriage, then another part of what Valence presented to him had been false.

He closed the report.

"Did you ask her?"

"No."

"Good."

Daric understood.

"You’re asking her yourself."

"Yes."

Raigoro left the reports on the table and crossed from Command Terrace toward the Inner Keep.

The Grand Duchess’s apartments occupied the eastern side.

The guards outside her doors straightened.

"Your Grace."

"Is she inside?"

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"Alma is with her."

"Tell the Duchess I need to speak with her."
