The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride
Chapter 107: RECOGNITION
DIANA’S POV
By the time the first Valence carriage passed through Blackharrow’s outer gate, Diana had already spent half an hour pretending her hands were not cold.
Red and gold moved along the final mountain road in a line too orderly to mistake for merchants. Supply wagons followed behind the diplomatic carriages, escorted by Southern soldiers who looked increasingly offended by the existence of winter.
Diana watched from the covered entrance court.
She had stood here once before, arriving inside a carriage while hundreds of Blackharrow faces waited to inspect the Southern princess they believed had ignored Third Watch.
Today she stood beside Raigoro.
Visible and still carrying the same stolen name.
The difference offered very little comfort.
Raigoro wore formal black rather than field armor. Daric stood several places to his right with senior command officers, while Mistress Hale and the Citadel steward waited near the household entrance.
Diana’s place had been set beside her husband.
Protocol.
The word became useful when she looked at him too long.
Raigoro had spoken to her only once during the wait.
"The lower court is colder than expected."
Diana looked at him, wondering briefly whether he was concerned.
"You may wait inside until the first carriage reaches the gate."
Practical.
She wrote: I AM FINE.
He nodded.
Nothing more.
Wind moved through the entrance court as harness bells sounded below.
The gates began opening.
Valence horns sounded, and Blackharrow answered with the formal receiving signal.
The first carriage entered.
The royal engineering representative stepped down.
Diana recognized him from court distance. He had spent most of his career away from the palace and showed no sign of recognizing her.
"Your Graces."
Good.
The second carriage carried treaty officials.
One man had attended Selena’s seventeenth birthday celebration, but his eyes passed over Diana without change.
Perhaps he remembered only Selena.
Perhaps Diana had never mattered enough to enter his memory.
The third carriage stopped.
Diana’s fingers tightened around her slate.
Lord Cassian Rovel emerged carefully, one hand resting on a servant’s arm.
She knew him.
Age had silvered his hair without changing the way he looked at a room before choosing where to step.
He straightened.
His gaze found Raigoro first, then Diana.
He stopped.
His hand tightened around the servant’s arm as his eyes moved from her scar to her hair and finally to her face.
He knew.
This was recognition, not suspicion or resemblance.
Diana felt six years old and twenty-five at once.
Lord Rovel looked at the woman he had once known as Princess Diana Valence.
Then he bowed.
"Your Grace. Princess Selena."
The borrowed name entered Blackharrow in a Valence voice.
Diana did not move.
Beside her, Raigoro kept his attention on Rovel.
"Welcome to Blackharrow."
Nothing else followed.
The next delegate approached, then another.
Diana performed the reception correctly, bowing and offering a written welcome where needed while Mistress Hale’s staff directed arrivals toward their assigned rooms.
No one announced Diana’s real name.
No one created a scene.
The silence told her enough.
Lady Jessa Harrowen stepped from the fourth carriage.
Her gaze found Diana and stopped before lowering.
"Your Grace."
No princess name at all.
A diplomatic secretary stared too long before bowing deeper than necessary. The military quartermaster showed no recognition.
Different people knew different parts of the same history.
Valence had never needed every person to understand the whole lie. It had needed enough people to learn what not to say.
The receiving line continued.
Diana became painfully aware of Raigoro beside her.
He had seen Rovel recognize her, Lady Jessa avoid the name, and the secretary stare. He already possessed archive proof.
Any one of those reactions could have given him another question.
He asked none.
His restraint no longer felt safe.
It felt like distance.
The final carriage emptied, and servants began moving luggage inside.
The supply convoy remained below under joint guard until formal receiving could begin.
Lord Rovel passed Diana again on his way toward the eastern guest wing, his eyes carefully forward.
Diana wanted to stop him.
She could write one word.
DIANA.
Watch him decide whether to deny the child he had known.
Her fingers tightened, but she did nothing.
The lie she gave Raigoro had made anger difficult.
Rovel had looked at Diana and called her Selena.
So had Diana.
The truth burned.
The court began clearing.
Daric followed the senior commissioner toward Government Terrace while Mistress Hale directed guest attendants toward the household passage.
Diana remained beside Raigoro and prepared herself.
He had every reason to ask now.
Did Rovel know you?
How long?
Was that recognition?
Which others knew?
Would Lady Jessa confirm it?
Diana waited.
Raigoro looked toward the household entrance.
"Did the eastern rooms clear inspection?"
Diana blinked.
She wrote: YES.
"The commissioner?"
FIRST FLOOR.
"Good."
Nothing else.
Diana stared at him.
Raigoro gave nothing away. No accusation, curiosity, or warmth.
He had seen Valence recognize her and apparently decided the fact did not entitle him to another question.
Raigoro looked toward the last supply wagon.
"Receiving begins tomorrow morning."
Diana nodded.
He glanced toward Government Terrace.
"I have council."
Another nod.
He inclined his head.
"Your Grace."
Then he left.
Diana remained beneath the entrance arch while Valence servants carried trunks into the rooms she had assigned. Southern officials who remembered Diana walked through corridors where Blackharrow called her Duchess.
In the lower receiving court, fourteen restitution wagons waited under joint guard.
A Blackharrow quartermaster was already setting scales beside the first one. Clerks numbered the wagons in receiving order and tied blank inspection tags beside each station. One table held the seal ledger, while another held empty receiving sheets, wax markers, and sample bags.
The convoy had not begun unloading, yet Blackharrow was already building the record that would follow each crate and sack from the gate into storage.
Diana watched the preparations settle into place.
Tomorrow there would be fewer places for assumption to hide.
Valence would discover that arriving under a royal seal did not mean Blackharrow intended to take its word for anything.
