The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

Chapter 102: THE EVIDENCE AGAINST SELENA

RAIGORO’S POV

Daric found Raigoro in the lower training court the following morning.

A reserve infantry company was practicing recovery after a broken center. Broken Ward had made the exercise newly relevant. The first line gave ground too quickly, the second closed before the rear rank had room to move, and the training officer called for another reset.

Raigoro watched the soldiers return to their marks.

"Again."

Daric stopped beside him with the identity file under one arm.

"I have the complete case."

Raigoro kept his attention on the formation below.

"Does Selena survive it?"

"Barely."

Raigoro looked at him.

"Start with her."

Daric opened the file.

"Modern Valence succession names Selena as Odran’s daughter and First Princess. Foreign observers saw her publicly before the marriage. She was independently heard speaking nineteen days before the wedding. The marriage record names Selena, and the Blood Compact accepted your bride as genuine Valence royal blood."

Below them, the training horn sounded.

"That is the strongest case?"

"Yes."

"Now break it."

They began walking along the covered edge of the court while the company tried the formation again.

"The Compact established blood, not personal identity. Odran controlled the name used in the marriage declaration. Your wife later confirmed that her inability to speak existed before you reached Valence."

Raigoro nodded.

"Which leaves an unrecorded event during those nineteen days if she truly is Selena."

"Still possible."

"Yes."

Daric drew out the older register.

"Then we have an independently recorded elder firstborn daughter of Odran and Queen Elara. Other foreign records name her Princess Diana Valence and identify her as First Princess, older than Selena."

Another page.

"She appears publicly as a child."

Then the medical copy.

"And a physician’s record documents an established impairment of speech during childhood."

Raigoro looked at the page.

"Verified?"

"By a senior Citadel healer. The record supports an ongoing inability to produce normal speech at the time of examination. It does not establish cause, permanence, or complete absence of every possible sound."

Daric continued.

"After Elara’s death, Diana’s public appearances and household allocations decline. Later records stop making room for her. We found no death, marriage, formal renunciation, religious retirement, exile order, or succession decree explaining her disappearance."

"And Selena becomes First Princess."

"Yes."

The soldiers below reset again.

This time the center held.

Raigoro barely noticed.

Daric closed the file halfway.

"The Duchess is of compatible age. Alma has known her for years. Vharos recognizes her from childhood. The woman you married arrived already unable to speak. The simplest explanation is that Odran gave you his erased firstborn daughter under Selena’s name."

Raigoro looked at the name on the medical copy.

Diana Valence.

For months, the possibility that his wife was not Selena had remained a theory supported by behavior and undermined by missing proof.

The archives had finally supplied the missing person.

Evidence could give Raigoro a name.

It could not make that name his to use before she gave it to him.

He remembered the slate before Broken Ward.

COME BACK.

The Winter Court. Her arguments over Vharos. Frostberry preserve. The way she found people official records had misplaced. Her hand resting deliberately on his sleeve when he returned.

All of those moments belonged to the same woman whether the archive called her Selena or Diana.

Raigoro wanted the answer from her.

Daric watched him.

"What do you intend to do?"

"Ask."

"You are nearly certain she has lied about her identity since the wedding."

"Yes."

"No arrest?"

"No."

"No public accusation?"

"No."

"No immediate legal challenge to the marriage?"

"Not before I understand what happened."

"Return to Valence?"

"No."

The answer came quickly enough that Daric stopped asking.

Raigoro looked toward the training court. The company had moved into another drill, but he was no longer following it.

"Inside."

A small officers’ duty room opened from the covered gallery. Daric placed the file on the plain table while the sounds of training continued beyond the window.

The covenant would eventually require legal review.

Odran had named Selena. The Blood Compact had accepted royal blood. A woman had entered the ritual under another woman’s name, under coercion Raigoro had not fully understood.

Valence had committed fraud.

That did not make his wife cargo to be returned when the fraud was discovered.

Raigoro remembered their first night in Blackharrow. His wife had stood rigid beside the marriage bed, expecting law to give him rights over her body because the ceremony called him husband.

He had refused that logic then.

He refused its political version now.

If she believed that admitting her identity meant immediate return to Odran, then the question itself carried a threat. Raigoro might obtain an accurate answer, but fear would still have helped produce it.

Daric leaned against the table.

"She had opportunities to tell you."

"Yes."

That was the part Raigoro could not dismiss.

There had been private questions, Vharos, fragments of childhood memory, the cavern, the accidental kiss, and the quiet hours in between. She had trusted him with more of herself each time.

Never the name.

That hurt.

Understanding fear did not make deception painless.

But Raigoro could also see what the evidence described: a child gradually removed from public life after her mother died, a princess stripped from the record without explanation, and a woman eventually sent north beneath her younger sister’s name.

Blackharrow might have felt safer to Raigoro long before it felt safe to her.

He could remove one reason for silence before he asked for the truth.

"Whatever the legal consequences of the marriage fraud, she is not being returned to Odran."

Daric nodded.

"In writing?"

"Yes."

Daric drew out a clean command sheet.

Raigoro dictated a private memorandum placing the Grand Duchess under Blackharrow protection pending formal review of the Valence fraud. She could not be transferred to Valence or surrendered to Odran, Maerissa, or any Valence representative. Any dispute concerning marriage, title, succession, or covenant status would proceed through law rather than physical custody.

Daric finished the final line.

"And Alma?"

Raigoro considered.

Alma might have participated knowingly in the substitution. That question could wait until he understood the coercion surrounding it.

"Do not detain her over the identity matter before I hear what happened."

"Not immunity."

"No."

"Protection from immediate retaliation."

"Yes."

Raigoro could promise only what he controlled.

He could protect his wife from being handed back to her father. He could prevent Alma from becoming leverage. He could keep the first conversation private.

He could not promise the marriage would remain legally untouched or that no law had been broken.

Daric closed the memorandum.

"You want me present?"

"No."

"Alma?"

"I will let her choose whether Alma stays before I ask."

Daric nodded.

Beyond the window, the training horn sounded again.

Raigoro looked once more at the oldest register.

Princess Diana Valence.

Firstborn daughter.

First Princess.

A child with a documented impairment of speech.

Later almost entirely erased from the record.

He had spent months trying to discover what happened to the woman Odran placed beneath the veil.

Now he had enough evidence to ask her directly.

Before he did, he had made certain that telling him yes would not give her father the power to take her back.
