The Dragon Kings' Forbidden Witch

Chapter 159: Reality Settling In

The tension that had hung in the air began to ease.

Thorne’s expression became more serious, though the warmth did not entirely fade from his eyes.

"We should retire to our rooms now," he said.

The understanding that they needed to step away from her presence, needed to regain their control, needed to prepare for what was coming.

Kaelen shook his head slowly, acknowledging the truth of it.

"I need to cool off anyway," he said, and there was no bitterness in the statement....just honesty.

He turned to begin walking down the corridor toward his own chambers. But before he left, he glanced back at his brother.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

The words carried the weight of gratitude mixed with understanding. Thank you for believing in me.

Thorne inclined his head slightly.

A gesture of acknowledgment. A gesture of unity.

Kaelen’s footsteps echoed softly as he walked down the corridor, moving away from her chamber, moving toward his own space where he could face the night alone. The distance between them grew with each step, but something fundamental remained, the connection that had been established the moment he had touched her face in the darkness.

Thorne watched his brother disappear around the corner.

The footsteps faded, leaving only silence in their wake. The Shadow King remained where he was, his back against the cool stone wall opposite her door, his dark eyes fixed on the wooden entrance that separated him from the girl who held all their futures in her hands.

He could hear nothing from within her chamber.

No movement, no sound, no indication that she had woken from Kaelen’s visit. She slept on, unaware of the predator who had stood over her bed, unaware of the intensity of what his presence meant, unaware that everything in her world was about to change.

Thorne understood what his brothers did not yet fully grasp.

Morgana was not just their mate. She was the key to everything....to breaking the curse, to understanding the ancient dragons’ sudden communication, to reshaping the very nature of their kingdom. And tomorrow, when all three of them stood before her and demanded that she accept the bond, she would have to be ready.

He would ensure it.

His dark eyes remained fixed on her door as he stood his silent vigil.

After a long time, he pushed off from the wall.

His movement was graceful, controlled, radiating the absolute confidence of someone who knew exactly who he was and what he was capable of. He turned from her door and walked down the corridor toward his own chambers.

His footsteps made no sound on the stone floor.

The shadows seemed to part for him as he moved, as if the darkness itself recognized his presence and yielded to his passage.

*THE NEXT MORNING*

The morning light came through her window like a benediction.

It fell across her bed in golden rays, warming the fine linens that covered her, illuminating dust motes that danced in the air like tiny spirits.

Morgana woke slowly, as if rising from deep water, her consciousness returning to her body in stages.

For a moment, just a moment, she did not remember.

She existed in a state of pure sensation....the softness of her pillow, the warmth of the morning sun, the peace of waking without fear. And then memory crashed back.

The trial.

The conspiracy exposed.

The Law of Crown Protection invoked.

The kings claiming her as their ward.

The weight of her new reality pressed down on her chest, making it difficult to breathe. She lay in the fine bed in the royal wing of the palace and understood that the girl who had slept in the stables was gone. That life had been consumed by flame and conspiracy and the terrible brilliance of three kings deciding that she mattered enough to claim.

She sat up slowly.

The sheets pooled around her waist. Her nightgown, finer than anything she had owned before becoming a ward, hung loosely on her body. She looked around the chamber....at the beautiful furniture, the carved wardrobe, the fine paintings on the walls. None of it felt real. None of it felt like it belonged to her.

Her thoughts turned to Rowan.

She wondered where her best friend was at this moment. In the kitchens, probably, preparing the morning meals. Moving through the palace with the invisibility of a servant, going about daily tasks while Morgana’s entire world had been transformed. She missed Rowan with an intensity that was almost physical. She would do anything to have her friend here, to have someone she could talk to, someone who knew her before all of this, someone who could help her understand what was happening.

But Rowan was in the servants’ quarters.

And Morgana was in the royal wing.

The gulf between them had become almost unbridgeable.

She moved to the window and looked out at the palace grounds below. Guards were moving in their morning patterns. Servants were beginning their daily work. The palace was waking, beginning its endless cycle of duties and protocols and the intricate dance of a kingdom being maintained.

She was separate from all of it now.

A knock at her door pulled her from her thoughts.

The knock was sharp, professional, announcing presence with the confidence of someone who did not expect to be denied entry.

"Come in," Morgana called, pulling the sheets more fully around herself.

The door opened with smooth grace, and Agnes entered.

The old maid was moving with the practiced efficiency of someone who had performed this duty countless times before, entering noble chambers in the morning, assessing the state of her charge, beginning the process of preparation for the day. Behind her came three other servants, younger than Agnes, carrying items with quiet competence.

One bore fresh linens, white and fine. Another carried a pitcher of hot water, steam rising from its spout. The third held a selection of garments, each one finer than anything Morgana had worn since arriving at the palace.
