Chapter 82: Chapter 79: Jiang Chaosheng at the Abandoned Station
"Hello. Dinner is served."
"Would you like to order?"
"Hello..."
The train attendant moved through the carriages.
In truth, all the passengers were gathered in the fourth carriage.
The remaining soft sleeper and hard seat carriages were all empty.
If those carriages could be said to have anyone in them, it was only human corpses.
All the people who had originally died in the fourth carriage had been dragged into the other carriages by the passengers.
Even though there were no living people in those carriages, the attendant still robotically asked every empty seat.
The robotic inquiries made everyone’s scalp tingle with fear.
At the back of the fourth carriage, the actress huddled tightly against the actor.
"Honey, I’m scared."
The actor’s face was deathly pale.
"It’s okay, it’s okay. I’m here. Don’t be afraid."
Suddenly, a robotic voice sounded.
"Hello, would you like to order a meal?"
The actress looked up and saw the face of the female attendant in the red uniform.
She caught a foul, coppery scent from the attendant.
’Could that be the smell of blood?’
Seeing her in that red uniform, and imagining it might be stained red with blood, she was so frightened she started to cry.
The actor was also trembling all over, not daring to say a word, just staring blankly at the attendant.
The attendant’s voice grew gradually more impatient.
"Excuse me, would you like to order a meal?"
"Yes. A steak for each of them, thank you."
Zhong Shu walked over.
’He knew it was best not to defy the attendant.’
’They just had to make sure not to eat the two steaks.’
The attendant took two steaks from the dining cart, placed them on the actor and actress’s small table, and pushed the cart away.
Zhong Shu watched the attendant’s retreating back, feeling that they were like a pre-written program.
Even though he had shot this very attendant at noon today, she didn’t seem to hold a grudge at all.
The actress looked at Zhong Shu, sobbing.
"Thank you, thank you for saving me.
I’m sorry. I did a lot of awful things to you before. I promise it won’t happen again."
The actor stared blankly at Zhong Shu for a moment.
’He wanted to say thank you, but the words wouldn’t come out.’
’Because Zhong Shu was a coward, a spineless loser who only knew how to say sorry.’
’He had bullied him often.’
’How did this kind of person suddenly become a hero?’
’To say thank you to someone he regularly bullied... he really couldn’t bring himself to do it.’
Zhong Shu didn’t mind. He said with a slight smile,
"It’s nothing. It’s getting dark soon. Get ready to sleep, and don’t open your eyes."
After giving his instructions, Zhong Shu left, holding the flintlock gun.
The actress punched the actor lightly in displeasure.
"Don’t you know how to be a little more pleasant?"
The actor said in a suppressed voice,
"You want me to grovel to Zhong Shu?"
The actress’s face fell.
"Look at you, so useless. Zhong Shu can fight Ghosts. Can you?"
’The actress found Zhong Shu so mysterious. He had so many unknown secrets, just like the male lead in a novel.’
The actor’s eyes filled with jealousy. He clenched his fists, staring at Zhong Shu’s back.
His wife’s incessant praise for Zhong Shu rang in his ears.
The flames of jealousy in the actor’s eyes were about to erupt.
He looked at the flintlock gun in Zhong Shu’s hand.
’If I can just get that flintlock gun, I’ll be the new hero of this train.’
...
"If anyone is hungry, come find me. I have some bread."
After Zhong Shu spoke, no one answered.
’After seeing so many bloody scenes today, everyone still felt like throwing up. Who could possibly eat?’
Zhong Shu glanced around at the crowd.
Those few people in robes were gone.
Zhong Shu didn’t dwell on it and said,
"It’s about to get dark. Everyone, close your eyes tightly. No matter what you hear, do not open them."
Everyone immediately shut their eyes, squeezing them tight.
Zhong Shu also returned to his seat, holding Bai Tasha’s trembling hand to comfort her.
The night grew deeper.
Someone heard a sound.
At first, it was just a faint rustling, like the sound of a mouse stealing grain.
Gradually, the sound grew louder.
"CRUNCH... CRUNCH..."
The hair-raising chewing sound seemed to be right beside their ears.
Someone couldn’t resist their curiosity. They secretly opened their eyes to a slit, their eyeballs darting to the corner.
He saw clearly what was closest to him.
It was a burly man, the same one who had just died at noon today.
Right now, he was gnawing on his own corpse!
This bizarre scene made him shiver.
’Good thing I only peeked through a slit.’
He quickly closed his eyes.
Suddenly, he heard the sound of wind.
’Where was the wind coming from?’
He peeked open a slit again and saw a bloodshot eyeball and a deathly pale face.
It was the burly man from before!
A smile slowly formed on the burly man’s lips, growing more and more exaggerated until the corners of his mouth stretched to his ears.
He grabbed the man and bit down on his neck.
The screams and struggles were exceptionally piercing in the silent night.
Zhong Shu gripped Bai Tasha’s hand tightly, his whole body trembling.
’He was terrified too!’
Zhong Shu shouted,
"Don’t open your eyes! You’ll die if you open your eyes!"
Those passengers who, out of fear, had wanted to run or open their eyes, immediately settled down.
That night was unbearably long.
Everyone either clung to something for comfort or put their hands together and silently recited scriptures.
Amidst the chewing sounds by their ears, the atmosphere of despair grew thicker.
...
The next day, it wasn’t until the sunlight was blinding that everyone dared to open their eyes.
The actress saw the man’s horrific state not far away and immediately clutched her stomach, dry-heaving.
The actor comforted her.
"Don’t be afraid. I’ll protect you."
The actress shoved the actor’s hand away.
"What good are you?
Can you fight Ghosts?
Can you get me out of here?
You can’t even earn money, yet you insisted on going to some hot spring town!"
The actor was stunned for a moment, not knowing how to respond.
The actress looked at Zhong Shu, who was sitting at the very front, and made up her mind.
She got up from her seat and stood timidly in front of Zhong Shu.
"Zhong Shu, I want... I want to go to the bathroom, but I’m too scared to go alone. Can you come with me?"
Zhong Shu was taken aback for a second, then nodded.
"Okay."
He got up and followed the actress.
The actor sat in his seat, staring at the two of them with venomous hatred.
...
At the bathroom door, the actress pulled Zhong Shu inside and threw herself into his arms.
Zhong Shu turned bright red and quickly pushed the actress away.
"What... what are you doing?"
The actress lowered her eyes.
"I’m so scared. Can’t you just hold me?"
Zhong Shu frowned and didn’t move.
The actress looked up, tears streaming down her face, looking utterly pitiful.
She moved closer to Zhong Shu again, gently wrapping her arms around his waist. Her red lips blew against his ear, tickling him.
The actress whispered,
"Zhong Shu, you’re amazing.
You’re the bravest, most amazing man I’ve ever met.
I really never expected you to be an Exorcist, hidden away from the world."
Zhong Shu quickly tried to explain.
"I... I’m not an Exorcist. I..."
The actress’s hand moved to unbuckle Zhong Shu’s belt.
’Even if Zhong Shu were a complete idiot, how could he not understand what the actress meant?’
’Don’t forget, he was a screenwriter!’
Zhong Shu shoved the actress away and stammered,
"Um, uh, I’m not that kind of person. I’m... I’m going out."
The actress was dumbfounded.
’Are there really men in this world who aren’t lecherous?’
Zhong Shu stumbled out of the bathroom in a panic. Just as he re-entered the carriage, he saw a sight that enraged him.
The actor was holding a fruit knife to Bai Tasha’s throat, staring furiously at Zhong Shu. He said, enunciating each word,
"Did you have fun with my wife?"
Zhong Shu waved his hands frantically.
"You’ve misunderstood! Let her go, quickly!"
The actor’s fruit knife pressed slightly deeper into Bai Tasha’s neck.
"Give me that gun!"
Zhong Shu hesitated.
If the gun were his, he would have given it to the actor without a second thought.
But the gun belonged to the old beggar. The old beggar had entrusted it to him to deliver to an antique shop owner in the South Sea.
"AHH!"
Bai Tasha let out a sharp cry.
Zhong Shu quickly looked up and saw that the actor had pricked Bai Tasha again. Blood was now trickling out.
It looked garishly beautiful against her fair skin.
Zhong Shu couldn’t hesitate any longer. He tossed the flintlock gun to the actor.
"Fine! Let her go!"
The actor caught the flintlock gun, a vicious grin spreading across his face.
"You, kneel! You fucking slept with my wife, so kneel!"
The surrounding passengers kept their heads down, completely indifferent.
’It didn’t matter who had the gun, as long as it could protect them.’
Suddenly, the train stopped. An electronic voice announced,
"We have arrived at Dongpu Station."
Everyone looked astonished.
’The train still stops at stations?’
They all rushed to look outside.
They had left the sea behind. Outside, a light rain was falling.
The area was overgrown with weeds. The station doors and the station sign were covered in rust.
This was an abandoned train station. It didn’t look like the kind of place where anyone would be waiting for a train.
Suddenly, a figure appeared in their line of sight.
He was wearing a black suit and a black trench coat, had short hair, and was holding an umbrella.
The man looked at his watch, as if he had been waiting for the train for a long time.
He was like a protagonist from a story, a man with a past, waiting at an abandoned train station for a train that would never arrive.
And now, it had arrived.
