Vera Xavier met Susan Caldwell’s gaze. If she hadn’t already been on her guard, Susan would have likely guessed what she was thinking.

Ultimately, this was a test from Susan Caldwell, to probe whether Vera knew about her relationship with Winter Sullivan. It wasn’t supposed to be some shameful secret, but Susan’s probing utterly repulsed her.

She said coldly, "Susan Caldwell, are you out of your mind? Your mother fainted, and instead of going to the hospital to take care of her, you come running to me to cry? Don’t tell me you’re trying to pin your mother’s collapse on me again!"

"Don’t inflict your insane logic on me! If you’re really such a good, dutiful daughter, then get your ass over to the hospital and take care of your mother instead of playing the victim here! And stop trying to pin these baseless accusations on me!"

Susan Caldwell stared intently into Vera Xavier’s eyes, so she clearly saw the fury in them. But besides that fury, there was nothing else. Susan’s heart eased slightly.

Although she was afraid of Vera running to Winter Sullivan and telling on her, which would expose all her secrets, she was even more afraid that Vera knew the truth about her own parentage.

It seemed Vera didn’t actually know. Susan Caldwell let out a small sigh of relief.

Just as she was about to speak, Vera Xavier had already thrown open the dorm room door and said coldly, "Get out!"

With the door open, Susan Caldwell stared fixedly at Vera Xavier. Vera’s eyes were filled with an intense frost. Susan’s eyes, in turn, reddened. "Vera, you’re going too far..."

"That’s enough!" Vera Xavier shouted. "Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing. You’re trying to spread rumors behind my back that I’m the one who put your mother in the hospital. Her being sick has nothing to do with me! If you have even a shred of conscience, you’d put all that energy you spend scheming into taking care of your mother."

As soon as she finished speaking, she shoved Susan Caldwell out of the dorm room and slammed the door shut.

The commotion was so loud that several doors in the girls’ dormitory flew open, and curious heads poked out to see what was happening.

Vera Xavier and Susan Caldwell were both well-known figures on campus now, so as Susan stood there, many of the girls immediately recognized her.

Susan Caldwell had indeed intended to pin the blame for Winter Sullivan’s condition on Vera, but Vera’s words before shutting the door had completely shattered that plan. In any case, her visit had served its purpose of probing Vera, so she knew it was best to leave now.

After shutting the door, Vera’s emotions were still in turmoil. She saw in Susan Caldwell the same cold-heartedness she saw in Rona Langdon.

Vera reasoned that even if Susan knew she wasn’t Winter Sullivan’s daughter, it was an indisputable fact that Winter had raised her for many years. With Winter sick, Susan’s first thought was to test and plot against Vera, not to care for her. Susan’s callousness was truly appalling.

She took a deep breath. When she came to, she found her three roommates staring at her.

She cleared her throat and asked, "How long was Susan Caldwell here?"

"Not long, maybe ten minutes or so," Fiona Wright asked, her curiosity piqued. "Vera, what is going on between you and Susan Caldwell?"
