The Briar-Route Waystation: I Bought a Run-Down Tavern in the Boundless Wilds
Chapter 235: The North Road Goes Quiet
Elian closed the lunch ledger. Three tables sat empty in the common room. The midday High-Timber wood transfer was four hours late.
At the Copy Desk, Heda ran her finger down the North Refuge supply logs. She pulled a second slate toward her and checked the numbers again.
"Fuel consumption at the North Refuge dropped twenty percent over the last two days," Heda said.
Traffic was slowing, but the road remained clear. The disruption came entirely through the taproom doors in the form of returning travelers. A southern courier claimed the fifth fire charged copper for a seat. An hour later, a merchant complained that the Oaken Hearth had instituted emergency fees north of the logging camp. By evening, a prospector swore the entire northern corridor had been converted into a private toll road.
The rumors mutated with every mile traveled. Bad information was intercepting the traffic before it reached the waystation.
Elian pulled his heavy riding coat from its hook.
Merren intercepted him near the door. The healer pressed two fingers into the front of Elian's left shoulder, checking the tension in the repaired muscle. Elian did not flinch. Merren rotated the arm outward.
"Normal daily use," Merren announced. "You can ride. You can carry a standard pack. Do not lift a wagon axle."
Elian rolled the shoulder, feeling the deep, satisfying absence of tearing pain. The joint finally belonged to him again.
The investigation party remained small. Elian, Rylia, Heda, and Talyra mounted up in the yard. Skade had already vanished into the high ridges, taking a wider overwatch position rather than becoming another body crowding the conversation.
They rode north. The horses’ hooves broke through the morning frost crusting the mud.
They reached the High-Timber camp before noon. Bram stood near the main processing deck with a heavy splitting maul resting against his boot. He looked annoyed.
"A northbound freighter stopped his cart this morning," Bram grunted. "He asked if he needed to put copper in the emergency firebox before he lit the kindling."
Serra walked over from the resin vats holding a cargo manifest. "Two different merchants refused their warming rations. We offered the hot broth, and they stayed in the freezing wind because they thought accepting the heat meant accepting a bill."
Tavi jogged past the adults carrying a wooden bucket of sap.
"Toll road!" the boy yelled.
Elian adjusted his reins. The false mark was actively damaging the core function of the Fire-Share system. If travelers refused emergency heat out of financial fear, the winter casualty rate would spike.
They pushed past the logging camp, leaving the wide, churned ruts of the timber wains for the narrower northern trail. The temperature dropped as the tree canopy thickened. They rode for another hour, feeling the deep isolation of the mountain pass, the wind biting at their faces until the trail hooked sharply to the east.
The fifth fire sat tucked beneath a massive granite overhang.
Elian pulled his horse to a halt. He surveyed the construction. A heavy canvas windbreak stretched across the exposed side, anchored firmly to the rock. The masonry firebox drafted cleanly upward, routing the smoke along the stone face so it wouldn't choke the occupants. Split cordwood sat stacked in dry, organized rows off the damp ground. A clean water barrel and a covered grain trough waited near the perimeter.
It was a remarkably competent operation.
A man and a woman in thick, patched wool coats stepped out from behind the windbreak. They carried no weapons. They did not tense up or look toward the trees for an ambush. They were simply a local couple working a trade stop.
The man wiped soot from his hands onto his trousers. He looked at the horses, then locked eyes with Elian. A broad, welcoming smile broke across his face.
"Hearth-master," the man said. "Good. We wanted to discuss the franchise."
Elian stared at him. "The what?"
