Episode 49 - The Last Apostle [3]

─────────────────────────────────

Boom!

The Apostle’s figure blurred. The sound of the wind crackled with a thunderous roar, and in the next instant, the Apostle appeared in front of the duo, striking both of them in the abdomen with both fists.

Kaaang! Boom!

The punch twisted both of their bodies. A deafening explosion echoed through the air as they were sent flying with overwhelming force.

Lumina felt intense pain spread throughout her entire body, while Adel only felt his ribs and several internal organs shatter, yet experienced no pain.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The duo crashed into enormous crystalline rock formations.

Lumina and Adel fell to their knees as blood poured from their mouths.

Whoosh!

At that moment, the Apostle appeared. The Apostle raised a hand and grabbed Lumina by the head.

Kaaang!

The ground exploded as the Apostle slammed Lumina’s head into the earth.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

The Apostle repeated the motion over and over again. Then the Apostle grabbed Lumina by one leg and smashed her against the rock formations.

Crack!

The rocks shattered into pieces, sending fragments flying through the air.

Adel pushed himself off the ground and threw a punch. However...

"A human’s physical strength has always been the lowest among all the races in this world."

The Apostle caught Adel’s fist in the palm of a hand before smashing a fist straight into Adel’s face.

Boom!

Adel’s nose cracked as it broke, and blood dripped onto the ground.

The Apostle then grabbed Adel by the head and slammed it into a knee.

Kaaang!

The Apostle followed with a punch to Adel’s chest, sending him flying. The Apostle appeared in the path of Adel’s flight and struck him again.

Boom! Whoosh!

A rain of punches crashed down upon Adel. Bones throughout his body shattered, flesh was torn apart, and blood splattered across the ground.

Then the Apostle paused for a second and looked in another direction.

’Now...’

Adel twisted his arm into an unnatural angle and pointed it at the Apostle. Then he murmured,

"Annihilation."

"...?"

At that moment, the blade of a silver sword sliced through the air.

Whoosh!

Lumina’s sword pierced the Apostle’s chest, and black blood spilled onto the ground.

The Apostle staggered back before looking at Adel. Gritting teeth, the Apostle tore the sword out of the chest.

"That ability to erase the Power of Chaos..."

However, the Apostle was unable to finish the sentence.

The sky filled with flower petals—petals of different colors, perhaps every color that exists.

Crimson-red petals and purple petals formed swirling currents that gave birth to a massive tornado.

Adel moved a hand, and the petals descended upon the Apostle.

Then the sound of flesh being sliced apart reached Adel’s ears.

Black blood poured onto the ground together with grotesque sounds, along with countless chunks of flesh.

Then the petals vanished. Adel quickly pulled a potion from the Inventory and drank it.

Only one-third of Adel’s mana was restored, but that was more than enough, because something else was happening.

In the distance, Lumina, her vision blurred and her bones aching with pain, looked toward where the Apostle had been standing.

"....?"

"....?"

Neither Adel nor Lumina could keep the shock from showing. The Apostle was almost unrecognizable, yet still remained standing like an invincible warrior.

Then a laugh so loud that it could have deafened anyone echoed through the air, and without any warning...

"....!"

The Apostle extended a hand, and the same spear from before appeared. Then the Apostle hurled it.

The spear tore through the air. The flames and the Power of Chaos surrounding it twisted both the air and the space around it.

The spear crossed the distance in an instant, heading straight for Lumina.

"....!"

Whoosh! Boom!

The sound of flesh and bones being pierced rang out. Lumina felt a sharp pain in her chest, and in the next instant, flames spread through her body, destroying her internal organs.

"...!?"

She did not even scream as she dropped to her knees, teeth clenched and eyes wide open.

From a distance, Adel stood stunned. At that moment, the Apostle appeared right in front of him.

One of the Apostle’s arms had become a thin, razor-sharp blade. The Apostle swung it with tremendous force as flames engulfed it.

Adel barely managed to move, but the Apostle’s blade severed Adel’s left arm and, without stopping, seized Adel with the other arm.

Then the Apostle swung the blade that formed the arm and drove it into Adel’s chest.

Adel gritted his teeth as negative emotions welled up inside him.

Adel extended an arm and aimed the palm of the hand at the Apostle.

"Gravity."

One percent of the entire planet’s gravity twisted the Apostle’s body.

The Apostle’s body stretched, warped, twisted, and convulsed until it was torn to pieces.

His head was completely crushed along with his bones. The rest of his body was compressed, and blood exploded in every direction.

Then, his remains fell to the ground, and the Power of Chaos emanating from his body slowly faded away.

Adel dropped to his knees as amethyst-colored flames ravaged his insides, and blood poured from every opening of his body.

"Cough...!!!"

Adel fell onto his back as absolute silence engulfed the entire area.

The surroundings were unrecognizable. What had once been a landscape covered in snow, ice pillars, and countless smaller formations...

Now there was nothing but blackened earth, devastation, and destruction. And in the middle of it all...

Adel was barely breathing.

***

"Ah... ahh...!!!"

Adel staggered as his breathing became ragged.

He placed a hand over his chest, feeling his heart pounding with overwhelming force at an incredible speed.

He turned his head and noticed Lumina staring up at the sky. Adel followed her gaze.

There, a figure with angelic wings and the antlers of a deer floated in the air.

’Damn... so... that was the outcome of the fight.’

After using the effect of his Eyes of the End, Pandemonium, to see the outcome of the battle against the Apostle...

In the end, he managed to kill the Apostle, but in exchange, Lumina had most likely died, or perhaps been left on the verge of death.

And Adel himself would probably die within a matter of minutes.

He had also been left half dead.

He pressed his lips together as the memories from the vision of the future settled into place inside his mind.

Then he reached a conclusion.

’The pillar.’

Before him stood an enormous pillar of Power of Chaos.

After they managed to gravely wound the Apostle, the Apostle flew straight toward the pillar of Power of Chaos.

That was when the situation turned against both Adel and Lumina.

’A few more minutes and the Apostle would have reached Class 9. We could barely defend ourselves when the Apostle reached the peak of Class 8.’

In short, the Apostle gave them a completely one-sided beating.

Adel’s thoughts raced, and he quickly came up with a new plan.

Now that he knew the outcome if the Apostle managed to absorb the pillar of Power of Chaos...

Everything he had seen in his vision would happen again.

In that case, they had to do something different.

’If I use Annihilation, I can get rid of the pillar. The problem is that I need to get within at least five meters of it, and the pillar seems to be extremely valuable to the Apostle, so I won’t be able to get close easily.’

He turned his head toward Lumina. She would be the key to making things easier and defeating the Apostle far more easily.

Then, after thinking for less than a second, he finally spoke.

"Keep the Apostle from attacking me. I have a plan."

Lumina turned her head to look at him, but Adel had already moved.

Then Lumina tightened her grip on the hilt of her sword, and her figure blurred.

Slash!

In the blink of an eye, she appeared in front of the Apostle.

The Apostle blinked before looking at her expressionlessly.

Then a spear appeared in the Apostle’s hand. Amethyst-colored flames surged around the Apostle, and the Power of Chaos distorted the air.

Lumina swung her sword. The Apostle then swept the spear and blocked the attack with relative ease.

Kaaang! Boom!

Lumina shifted her stance as her attacks became increasingly erratic and more powerful.

She used several of her Traits to raise her strength to its absolute limit, barely managing to wound the Apostle.

The Apostle struck Lumina, sending her flying and crashing into the ground.

Then the Apostle soared through the air and appeared right in front of her.

However, Lumina had already prepared herself. She raised the palm of her hand, and a silver radiance emerged from it.

The Apostle came to a halt and immediately spun the spear.

Purple flames crackled through the air as they sliced apart the silver fragments fired toward the Apostle like bullets from a gun.

Slash!

The Apostle’s figure blurred as an explosion of flames engulfed the area.

Lumina gritted her teeth, but in the next second she felt unbearable pain.

Kaaang!

Her body was hurled away as blood burst from her mouth. Then, without wasting a moment, the Apostle appeared on the opposite side and struck again.

Lumina raised her sword to block the attack, but the force of the impact made her arms scream in agony.

Crack!

Then they broke, and intense pain spread throughout her body. She pressed her lips together while using part of her senses to search for Adel.

’Where are you...?’

But as if it had been a signal, the Apostle suddenly stopped, turned, and looked in one direction.

Lumina managed to steady herself and also turned her gaze toward the place the Apostle was looking at.

Then she spotted Adel. He had stretched out his hand directly in front of the pillar of Power of Chaos, and then...

"...?!"

The Apostle’s face twisted as immense fury erupted from within.

The pillar of Power of Chaos had disappeared.

At that moment, Lumina realized something.

’So the pillar of Power of Chaos could be the variable.’
