The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife
Chapter 70: Echoes That Refuse to Die (Part II)
The room became so quiet that the soft hum of the ship’s engines suddenly seemed deafening.
No one interrupted Adrian.
Not Roman.
Not Harold.
Not Lucian.
Not even Theo.
The countdown continued in the corner of every monitor.
46:18:04
46:18:03
46:18:02
Each second reminded them that while they were looking backward...
Susanna Croft was somewhere waiting for them to look forward.
Adrian rested both hands on the desk in front of him.
For several long moments he simply stared at Allison.
His daughter.
Alive.
Bruised.
Exhausted.
Still wearing the wedding ring that had become far more than a political arrangement.
He smiled faintly.
"You look like your mother."
Allison’s throat tightened.
"Dad..."
He shook his head.
"No."
His voice was unusually soft.
"If I’m finally telling this story..."
He looked toward Roman.
"...then I’m telling all of it."
Roman nodded once.
"No more half-truths."
Harold lowered his head.
"I should’ve insisted on that years ago."
"You should have," Roman answered quietly.
"But we’re here now."
⸻
Twenty Years Earlier
Author POV
Boston looked different twenty years ago.
Not because the buildings had changed.
Because the people inside them still believed they were untouchable.
Old money ruled quietly.
Deals weren’t made inside boardrooms.
They were made over expensive whiskey.
Private dinners.
Country clubs.
Charity galas.
Entire governments shifted because five families agreed over dessert.
The Crofts.
The Calloways.
The Laurent-Cassels.
The Ashbournes.
The Whitlocks.
Publicly...
They built hospitals.
Scholarship funds.
Museums.
Privately...
Not every decision deserved applause.
Not every signature belonged in history books.
Most people never knew.
Because ordinary people only saw the finished buildings.
Not the foundations beneath them.
⸻
Aaron Mercer believed systems could be repaired.
Roman believed corrupt people could be removed.
Harold believed the law would protect truth.
Elena believed truth protected itself.
Dorian believed the older four knew what they were doing.
They were wrong.
Every single one of them.
⸻
The five spent nearly a year auditing financial networks tied to international charitable foundations.
It was boring work.
Tedious work.
Necessary work.
Until Elena noticed something strange.
"These numbers don’t match."
Aaron looked up from his computer.
"What numbers?"
She slid several folders across the table.
"These donations."
Roman leaned over.
Harold joined them.
Dorian watched from across the room.
Elena pointed to several transfers.
"The same money is being donated..."
Another page.
"...withdrawn..."
Another.
"...then donated again through another foundation."
Aaron frowned.
"Money laundering?"
Elena slowly shook her head.
"Worse."
She looked toward Roman.
"They’re hiding ownership."
Roman’s expression darkened.
"Of what?"
Elena answered with one sentence.
"Everything."
⸻
For three months...
They followed the paper trail.
Every shell company led to another.
Every trust led to another.
Every charity connected to another board member.
Eventually...
Aaron found the center.
One ledger.
Leather bound.
Handwritten.
No computers.
No backups.
No digital footprint.
Only ink.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Orders.
Everything.
Harold remembered laughing.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"They actually wrote it down."
Aaron had laughed too.
"They never thought anyone would find it."
Roman hadn’t laughed.
He remembered staring at the names.
The signatures.
The initials.
Because suddenly powerful people stopped being untouchable.
They became criminals.
With evidence.
Real evidence.
Enough evidence to destroy entire dynasties.
⸻
Back in the present...
Lucian’s breathing slowed.
Almost involuntarily.
He looked toward Adrian.
"Was my family in the ledger?"
The question hung heavily.
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
He chose honesty carefully.
"Yes."
Lucian closed his eyes.
"My grandfather?"
Adrian nodded once.
"He signed documents."
Silence.
Then Adrian added—
"So did mine."
The room looked toward him.
Adrian met every gaze.
"I won’t defend him."
That surprised everyone.
Especially Allison.
Adrian continued.
"I loved my father."
A pause.
"But loving someone doesn’t erase what they’ve done."
Lucian stared quietly.
Adrian looked directly at him.
"If we’re going to end this..."
His voice hardened.
"...then we stop protecting dead men."
Roman smiled.
Small.
Proud.
"There he is."
⸻
Susanna
Allison leaned forward.
"My mom."
Roman looked toward her.
"What about her?"
"How was she involved?"
Roman smiled sadly.
"She wasn’t supposed to be."
⸻
Twenty years earlier...
Susanna Vale was only twenty-one.
She wasn’t married yet.
She wasn’t Susanna Croft.
She hadn’t met Adrian.
Not properly.
She was studying law.
Brilliant.
Sharp.
And completely unimpressed by wealthy men.
Roman remembered teasing her constantly.
"You’ll marry some boring lawyer."
Susanna rolled her eyes.
"I’d rather wrestle a bear."
Roman laughed.
"Fair."
She had been visiting Roman the night everything changed.
Pure coincidence.
Or fate.
She walked into the warehouse carrying coffee.
Then stopped.
The five stood around the ledger.
Nobody spoke.
Susanna looked around slowly.
"What happened?"
Elena answered honestly.
"I think we found something people kill over."
Nobody laughed.
That should’ve been the warning.
⸻
Back in the present...
Allison whispered,
"My mom knew."
Roman nodded.
"Everything."
"Then why didn’t she tell me?"
Roman looked toward Adrian.
Adrian answered instead.
"Because she promised."
"To who?"
Roman looked down.
"Me."
Allison blinked.
"You?"
Roman nodded slowly.
"I told her..."
His voice became rough.
"...if anything ever happened to us..."
He swallowed.
"...she had to protect the next generation."
Lucian understood immediately.
"Us."
Roman nodded.
"You."
Allison.
Lucian.
Theo.
Children who hadn’t even been born yet.
Roman continued quietly.
"Your mother hated that promise."
A sad smile crossed his face.
"She argued with me for an hour."
Theo grinned.
"That sounds like Allison."
Roman looked toward his niece.
"Runs in the family."
⸻
Elena’s Decision
The room became silent again.
Roman stared at the old photograph still displayed on the screen.
Elena.
Laughing.
Alive.
Hopeful.
He remembered her final smile perfectly.
She’d looked at Aaron first.
Then at Roman.
Then at the ledger.
Then quietly said—
"If this gets out..."
Aaron nodded.
"It changes everything."
Elena smiled.
"No."
She corrected.
"It gives people a chance."
Roman’s chest tightened.
Because that had always been Elena.
She believed people deserved second chances.
Even powerful ones.
Aaron looked toward her.
"What if they don’t?"
Elena took his hand.
"Then we become better than them."
⸻
Present day.
Aaron’s recorded image appeared briefly on another monitor.
Watching.
Silent.
Roman stared at it.
"That’s the moment."
Allison frowned.
"What moment?"
Roman never looked away from Aaron’s face.
"The moment I lost him."
The room grew still.
Roman’s voice barely rose above a whisper.
"When Elena disappeared..."
He finally looked toward Allison.
"...Aaron stopped believing people could become better."
Lucian felt Allison’s hand tighten around his.
He looked down.
She hadn’t realized she’d reached for him.
She noticed a second later.
Started to pull away.
Lucian gently held her hand instead.
Not trapping it.
Simply reminding her...
She didn’t have to face every painful truth alone.
She looked at him.
The fear in her eyes had changed.
It was still there.
But now something else existed beside it.
Trust.
Small.
Fragile.
Growing.
Lucian smiled.
Barely.
Enough.
⸻
A sharp beep interrupted the moment.
Everyone looked toward Elias.
He was staring at a satellite image.
Confused.
Then alarmed.
"I found something."
Roman stepped over immediately.
"What?"
Elias enlarged the image.
An abandoned monastery hidden deep within the mountains.
No roads.
No utilities.
Officially condemned twelve years ago.
Unofficially...
Heat signatures.
Several.
Including one isolated room.
Harold frowned.
"That’s impossible."
Elias shook his head.
"No."
He zoomed further.
"The coordinates Aaron sent..."
His voice slowed.
"...weren’t for where Susanna is."
Silence.
Theo frowned.
"What?"
Elias looked up.
"They’re where the past started."
Roman’s expression darkened.
"The monastery."
Harold whispered,
"The archives..."
Adrian stood abruptly on the monitor.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
His face had gone pale.
"Susanna told me..."
He stopped speaking.
Like he’d said too much.
Roman narrowed his eyes.
"What did she tell you?"
Adrian slowly looked toward Allison.
Then toward Lucian.
Finally toward Roman.
His voice was barely audible.
"The original ledger..."
He swallowed.
"...was never destroyed."
The room froze.
Every person suddenly understood.
Aaron hadn’t kidnapped Susanna for revenge alone.
He believed she knew where the ledger was hidden.
Roman whispered one sentence.
One sentence that made everyone immediately begin moving.
"We’re not racing against a clock anymore."
He looked toward the countdown.
Then toward Allison.
Then toward Lucian.
"We’re racing against history."
