The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife
Chapter 61: The Uncle Nobody Mentioned
For several long seconds, nobody moved.
The rain continued falling.
Emergency lights flashed red across the cargo deck.
Steel groaned beneath their feet.
And Allison Croft stared at the stranger who had just casually destroyed her understanding of reality.
"I’m your uncle."
The words echoed in her head.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Her uncle.
No.
That didn’t make sense.
Her mother had never mentioned a brother.
Not once.
Not in twenty-two years.
Not during birthdays.
Not during holidays.
Not during family stories.
Nothing.
The stranger seemed to read every thought crossing her face.
His expression softened.
Only slightly.
"You have your mother’s thinking face."
Allison blinked.
"What?"
The man pointed toward her forehead.
"Right there."
His deep voice carried easily through the storm.
"You wrinkle it when you’re trying to solve something."
Theo immediately nodded.
"She does."
Lucian nodded too.
"She does."
Allison looked offended.
"Why does everyone know that?"
Theo pointed dramatically.
"Because you make that face every time Elias starts explaining technology."
"That’s because he talks like a computer possessed another computer."
"Fair."
"Elias isn’t even here."
"Yet somehow he’s offended."
Somewhere behind them Simone yelled—
"I heard that!"
The cargo deck somehow became quieter.
Not because things were calmer.
Because everyone was watching the stranger.
The stranger watching Allison.
The identical bracelet hanging from his neck.
The impossible familiarity in his eyes.
Lucian stepped slightly closer to Allison.
Not enough to challenge.
Enough to protect.
The stranger noticed immediately.
His gaze shifted.
Measured Lucian once.
Then smiled.
"Calloway."
Lucian’s eyes narrowed.
"You know me."
The man barked out a laugh.
"Son, everybody knows you."
Theo immediately pointed.
"That’s exactly what I tell him."
Lucian ignored both of them.
The stranger extended a hand.
"Roman Vale-Croft."
Silence.
Then Theo groaned.
"Oh, fantastic."
Allison looked toward him.
"What?"
Theo rubbed both hands over his face.
"The mountain ghost."
The federal agents exchanged looks.
Even some of them seemed uncomfortable.
That caught Allison’s attention.
Roman noticed.
"That’s rude."
Theo pointed.
"You vanished for fifteen years."
"I was busy."
"Doing what?"
Roman smiled.
"Minding my business."
Nobody believed that.
Not for one second.
⸻
The Name That Changed the Room
Dorian Kreel froze.
Completely.
Roman noticed immediately.
Of course he did.
Nothing escaped Roman’s attention.
His gaze shifted toward the mercenary.
Recognition flickered.
Then something colder.
Something older.
"Well."
Roman sighed heavily.
"Dorian Kreel."
Dorian’s face lost color.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Because Dorian had shown fear toward exactly three people tonight.
The Architect.
The silver-haired federal man.
And now Roman.
Allison’s stomach tightened.
Who exactly was her uncle?
Roman studied Dorian for several seconds.
Then shook his head.
"You look terrible."
Theo laughed.
Actually laughed.
Even Dorian looked offended.
Roman pointed toward him.
"You used to be taller."
"I did not."
"You did in my memory."
"That’s not how height works."
"Maybe not for you."
The exchange was so bizarre Allison wasn’t sure whether to laugh or panic.
Lucian leaned closer.
Quiet enough only she could hear.
"Your family is strange."
Allison looked at him.
"My family?"
"Your uncle arrived on a bomb ship during a federal operation and insulted a mercenary."
"...fair."
⸻
The Bracelet
Roman’s attention returned to Allison.
This time the humor faded.
The teasing disappeared.
The room seemed to grow smaller.
His eyes settled on her wrist.
Then softened.
"You still have it."
Allison instinctively looked down.
The bracelet hidden beneath her sleeve.
The one she never removed.
The one her mother told her belonged to family.
The one she’d forgotten about until tonight.
Roman’s expression changed completely.
Pride.
Relief.
Something deeper.
"You kept it."
Allison swallowed.
"Mom said it was important."
Roman nodded slowly.
"Smart woman."
Then muttered—
"About time she listened to me."
That sounded suspiciously like a sibling argument.
A weirdly normal sibling argument.
And somehow that made him more real.
Less stranger.
More family.
Allison hated how much she wanted that.
Because wanting things made losing them hurt.
And she’d lost enough already.
Roman seemed to understand.
His voice lowered.
"You don’t have to trust me today."
The honesty surprised her.
"You don’t?"
"No."
His smile returned.
Small.
Tired.
"But it’d be nice eventually."
For the first time since meeting him—
Allison smiled back.
Just a little.
Roman visibly relaxed.
Like he’d been worried.
Actually worried.
The realization hit unexpectedly hard.
This man didn’t look at her like Adrian’s heir.
Or Lucian’s wife.
Or Anthony’s victim.
He looked at her like family.
⸻
Clara
The moment shattered.
A scream echoed from somewhere below deck.
Clara.
Everyone went still.
Lucian moved first.
Immediately.
Roman grabbed his shoulder.
The action happened so fast Lucian barely reacted.
Barely.
The cargo deck seemed to tense instantly.
Roman’s grip never tightened.
Never threatened.
But Lucian stopped moving.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Roman looked toward the lower decks.
Listening.
The scream came again.
Fainter now.
Further away.
His expression darkened.
"That’s wrong."
Theo frowned.
"What?"
Roman’s eyes narrowed.
"Sound pattern."
Nobody answered.
Roman pointed downward.
"The scream moved."
Elias finally looked up from the tablet.
"What does that mean?"
Roman’s answer arrived instantly.
"She’s moving."
Silence.
Then everybody realized what that meant.
The container.
The ship.
The hostage.
Everything.
Clara wasn’t trapped in one place.
She was being transported.
Still.
Right now.
While they stood here.
Lucian’s expression became lethal.
"Where?"
Elias spun the tablet around.
Maps flashed across the screen.
Cargo routes.
Internal ship schematics.
Moving heat signatures.
Then—
One signal.
Very small.
Very weak.
Heading deeper into the ship.
Toward the engine room.
Theo swore.
"Oh, that’s never good."
⸻
Roman’s Secret
As everyone prepared to move—
The silver-haired man reappeared on the monitor.
His eyes landed on Roman.
Immediately.
Neither spoke.
For several seconds.
The tension became almost unbearable.
Then the older man sighed.
"Roman."
Roman rolled his eyes.
"Harold."
The reaction was instant.
Dorian visibly flinched.
The federal agents exchanged alarmed looks.
Theo stared.
"Wait."
Nobody answered.
Theo pointed between them.
"YOU KNOW HIM?"
Roman looked confused.
"Yes."
Theo looked toward the federal man.
Then back at Roman.
Then back again.
Like he was trying to solve a math equation.
"Why?"
Roman shrugged.
"We worked together."
Silence.
Dead silence.
Even Allison stopped breathing.
Because nothing about that answer felt normal.
The federal man closed his eyes briefly.
Like he already regretted this conversation.
Theo pointed dramatically.
"Nobody says that casually."
Roman blinked.
"I do."
"That’s concerning."
⸻
The Architect’s Shadow
Harold finally looked toward the others.
His expression hardened.
"Aaron knows you’re here."
Roman nodded.
"Figured."
"Aaron?"
Allison repeated.
The name felt important.
Roman’s jaw tightened slightly.
The first real crack she’d seen.
"Aaron Mercer."
The Architect.
The room seemed colder.
Roman looked toward the ocean.
Toward the storm.
Toward memories only he could see.
Then quietly said—
"He wasn’t always this."
Nobody interrupted.
Roman continued anyway.
"Before they called him the Architect, he was just Aaron."
A pause.
"He wanted to fix things."
Another pause.
"He believed powerful people could help people."
Theo winced.
"Oh."
Roman nodded.
"Exactly."
Because everyone knew how that story ended.
Power used him.
Then discarded him.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Until something broke.
Roman looked toward Allison.
"The problem with people like Aaron..."
His voice softened.
"...is that they start out believing the world deserves saving."
Allison’s stomach tightened.
Because that sounded familiar.
Dangerously familiar.
Roman noticed immediately.
Of course he did.
His expression darkened.
Then he changed the subject.
Fast.
"Later."
Lucian caught that.
Theo caught it too.
Something passed between them.
A realization.
Aaron Mercer and Allison Croft had more in common than anybody liked.
⸻
The Rescue Begins
Another scream echoed below.
Closer this time.
Clara.
Definitely Clara.
Lucian immediately drew his weapon.
Theo checked his magazine.
Federal teams repositioned.
Even Dorian stepped forward.
Roman noticed.
"You’re helping?"
Dorian laughed bitterly.
"If Aaron has Clara..."
He didn’t finish.
He didn’t need to.
Roman’s eyes narrowed.
Then nodded once.
Decision made.
"Fine."
He looked toward the stairwell leading below deck.
The darkness seemed endless.
The emergency lights barely reached it.
Like the ship itself was swallowing light.
Swallowing hope.
Swallowing people.
Roman looked back at the group.
Then finally smiled.
Dangerous.
Confident.
The smile of someone who already planned ten moves ahead.
"Let’s go get the kid."
⸻
The team moved.
Down narrow stairwells.
Through dark corridors.
Past cargo containers.
Past abandoned equipment.
Past signs of a ship slowly becoming a floating tomb.
The deeper they traveled—
The quieter things became.
No ocean.
No rain.
No harbor.
Just steel.
Darkness.
And Clara’s occasional cries.
Then—
They reached a massive reinforced door.
Engine room access.
The signal stopped.
Right there.
Lucian looked toward Elias.
Elias looked at the tablet.
Then slowly nodded.
"She’s inside."
Nobody moved.
Not immediately.
Because everyone felt it.
The trap.
The setup.
The waiting.
Roman stepped forward first.
Hand on the door.
Listening.
Then his expression changed.
For the first time all Chapter.
Concern.
Real concern.
"What?"
Allison asked.
Roman didn’t answer immediately.
Then quietly said—
"We’re too late."
The words hit like a punch.
Lucian immediately shoved past him and yanked the door open.
The engine room stretched before them.
Huge.
Dark.
Empty.
A single spotlight illuminated the center of the room.
And beneath it—
A little girl sat tied to a chair.
Clara.
Alive.
Crying.
Terrified.
"CLARA!"
Lucian moved.
So did everyone else.
Then Clara looked up.
And screamed.
Not from relief.
Not from fear.
A warning.
"NO!"
Everything stopped.
Too late.
A slow clap echoed through the darkness.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then a familiar voice emerged from the shadows.
Warm.
Calm.
Terrifying.
The Architect.
"You finally found her."
