The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife

Chapter 49: The Man Who Sold the Wrong Secret

  • Next Chapter

Anthony Morrison was bleeding by the time Lucian Calloway found him.

Not dying.

Not broken.

Not yet.

Just messy enough to look like the universe had finally started collecting on his bad decisions.

Rain hammered against the cracked warehouse windows, turning the world outside into streaks of silver and black. The old Morrison shipping office smelled like rust, saltwater, wet concrete, and fear.

Anthony stumbled backward through the abandoned office clutching a gun he clearly did not know how to use properly.

His hand shook around the grip.

His breathing came fast and uneven.

Every sound made him flinch.

Every shadow looked armed.

Because for the first time in his privileged little life—

Anthony Morrison finally understood fear.

Real fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing status.

Not fear of Allison looking at him like he was nothing.

Fear of dying because dangerous people no longer found him useful.

He shoved an old filing cabinet against the office door with both hands, groaning as pain shot through his bruised ribs.

"Think," he whispered to himself. "Think, damn it."

But thinking was impossible.

His mind kept circling back to the same thing.

Clara.

The little girl was missing.

And somehow, stupidly, carelessly, Anthony had helped make that happen.

His phone vibrated violently in his pocket.

Anthony nearly dropped the gun.

He yanked the phone out with shaking fingers.

Unknown Number.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?!"

A distorted male voice replied calmly.

"You shouldn’t have talked."

Anthony’s blood went cold.

"I didn’t say anything."

"You led them to Boston."

"No. No, listen to me." Anthony backed away from the office door, looking around wildly like the voice might crawl out of the walls. "I didn’t lead them anywhere. They were already coming. Lucian was already—"

"You panicked."

Anthony swallowed hard.

"I can fix this."

"You already failed."

The line disconnected.

Anthony stared at the dead phone screen.

Then suddenly screamed and threw it across the room.

"FUCK!"

His voice echoed through the warehouse.

No response came.

No help.

No sympathy.

Nothing but rain, wind, and the distant low groan of a harbor horn.

Anthony pressed the heel of his hand against his forehead.

This wasn’t supposed to happen.

He only sold information.

That was it.

That was all.

Transport times.

Route changes.

Security names.

A few details about Vivienne’s private arrangements.

He never touched the kid.

Never planned the kidnapping.

Never even met the men directly.

He had thought it was leverage. Blackmail. Some pressure tactic against Vivienne. Maybe someone wanted money. Maybe someone wanted to embarrass her.

He had not thought a child would vanish.

He had not thought armed men would start hunting everyone tied to the secret.

Anthony slid down the wall, gun resting loosely in his hand.

"I didn’t know," he whispered.

But the words sounded pathetic even to him.

His chest tightened.

Vivienne stopped trusting him.

His parents barely answered calls.

His company was collapsing.

Sharon betrayed him.

Allison hated him.

Lucian married her.

And now killers were coming because Anthony Morrison had sold the wrong secret to the wrong people.

He let out a hollow laugh.

Then his phone buzzed again from where it had landed on the floor.

He crawled toward it.

Another unknown number.

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he stared at the cracked screen while one thought took root through the panic.

If anyone could find Clara alive...

It was probably the man Anthony had spent years underestimating.

Lucian Calloway.

And God help him—

Anthony had already called him.

⸻

Forty Minutes Earlier

The jet landed in Boston through brutal rain and worsening tension.

The second the aircraft door opened, Lucian moved.

Fast.

No hesitation.

No wasted motion.

Adrian’s security teams were already waiting on the private runway in black tactical gear, black SUVs lined up like a funeral procession for whoever had made the mistake of touching a child.

Theo stepped onto the wet tarmac and slowly pulled on black gloves.

Finally.

Something physical.

Something honest.

Simone blinked at the armored vehicles, rain misting over her perfectly styled ponytail.

"I know we’re all stressed," she said, looking from one armed guard to another, "but this is beginning to feel aggressively illegal."

Elias opened the SUV door for her calmly.

"It’s only illegal if paperwork survives."

Simone stared at him.

Then slowly smiled.

"...Why is that hot?"

Theo gagged loudly from behind them.

"Please don’t flirt during tactical deployment."

Simone shot him a look. "You literally smiled when you saw weapons."

"That’s different."

"How?"

"I have issues."

"Clearly."

Allison snorted softly while climbing into the lead SUV beside Lucian.

The second the door shut, the atmosphere changed.

Lucian sat beside her, already reviewing shipping manifests on his tablet. His face was cold and focused, jaw locked, posture too controlled.

Allison watched him for a few seconds.

"You’re doing the scary billionaire thing."

Lucian didn’t look up.

"Probably."

"That’s not reassuring."

His jaw tightened.

"Anthony sold information that got a child kidnapped."

That answered that.

Allison exhaled softly, then reached over and took the tablet from his hands.

Lucian looked at her immediately.

She raised a brow.

"You need one second to breathe before you commit several felonies."

Theo answered from the front passenger seat without turning around.

"I support the felonies."

Adrian, seated across from them, did not look up from his phone.

"No one is committing felonies until I approve them."

Simone’s voice came from the second SUV over comms.

"That is the most Croft sentence I’ve ever heard."

Lucian’s eyes stayed on Allison.

"I’m fine."

"No," Allison said calmly. "You’re controlled. That is different."

His expression shifted slightly.

She softened, just a little.

"She’s a child," Allison said. "I know."

Lucian’s voice dropped.

"She asked if I was her father."

The SUV went quiet.

Even Theo stopped joking.

Allison reached for Lucian’s hand under the cover of the dim cabin light. His fingers closed around hers immediately.

"She asked because someone lied to her," Allison said. "We’re going to fix the lie, and then we’re going to find her."

Lucian looked at their joined hands.

Then back at her.

"You sound very certain."

"I am."

"Why?"

Allison’s mouth curved faintly.

"Because I’m tired of letting unhinged rich people control the plot."

Theo barked out a laugh.

Adrian’s mouth twitched once.

Lucian finally looked like he could breathe.

Barely.

Then Elias’s voice crackled through the convoy earpiece.

"We traced Anthony’s emergency burner phone."

Lucian’s head lifted instantly.

"Where?"

"Warehouse district near the harbor. Morrison-owned property. Old shipping office, third warehouse on the east pier."

Theo grinned slowly.

"There it is."

Allison looked toward Lucian.

"Please tell me we’re not about to storm a shipping warehouse in the rain like emotionally damaged Batman characters."

Silence.

Theo turned halfway around in his seat.

"That is exactly what we’re doing."

Simone’s voice came through the comms, delighted.

"Oh my God. I hate that I’m excited."

Lucian took his tablet back.

"Stay behind security."

Allison tilted her head.

"Was that a request or an adorable attempt at control?"

Lucian’s eyes flicked to hers.

"Allison."

"Lucian."

Theo muttered, "They’re married five minutes and already arguing like a power couple with unresolved trauma."

Adrian said dryly, "Focus."

⸻

The Warehouse District

The harbor looked like hell.

Massive shipping containers towered through sheets of rain while fog rolled between warehouses and rusted cranes like ghosts. Puddles reflected red brake lights and industrial lamps, turning the ground into broken strips of blood-colored water.

Lucian stepped out of the SUV first.

Rain soaked through his black coat immediately.

He didn’t care.

Theo exited beside him, adjusting his gloves slowly, wearing a smile that made several armed guards glance at him twice.

Now that Allison got a proper look at Theo in combat gear, she understood why people were stupid to mistake him for harmless.

Tall.

Relaxed.

Smiling slightly.

Like violence genuinely entertained him.

Lucian noticed Allison staring and said flatly, "He’s worse when he enjoys himself."

Theo pointed at him. "That’s rude."

"You enjoy being rude."

"Also true."

Adrian’s security team spread through the shipping yard quickly.

Weapons drawn.

Comms active.

Silent hand signals.

No wasted motion.

Elias checked the tracker again. "Signal is inside. Upper office level. Heat signatures show Anthony and possibly one other unknown nearby."

Lucian moved instantly.

Allison grabbed his sleeve before he could walk off completely.

He looked down.

For a second, rain blurred everything between them.

"Be careful," she said.

The words hit harder than expected.

Lucian’s expression softened for half a second.

Then he leaned down just enough for only her to hear.

"Always."

Theo watched that exchange and rolled his eyes aggressively.

"Can we save the emotionally devastating romance for after the possible murder scene?"

Allison turned.

"You are one dramatic man."

Theo smiled.

"And yet you keep noticing."

Lucian gave him a warning look.

Theo lifted both hands.

"Fine. Rescuing first. Emotional damage later."

They moved.

The warehouse doors were already partially open, rattling in the wind.

Inside, darkness swallowed them.

The air smelled like sea rot, old oil, damp wood, and metal.

Security swept left and right.

Then a noise came from above.

A chair scraping.

A muffled curse.

Anthony.

Lucian’s face changed.

Theo saw it and murmured, "Don’t kill him before he talks."

Lucian didn’t answer.

Which was not reassuring.

⸻

Inside the Warehouse

Anthony heard footsteps outside the office.

Heavy.

Fast.

Organized.

His pulse exploded instantly.

"They found me."

He grabbed the gun shakily and stumbled toward the desk just as shouting erupted somewhere deeper in the warehouse.

Then—

CRASH.

Metal containers slammed together violently downstairs.

Anthony flinched hard enough to nearly fire.

More shouting.

A scream.

Then silence.

Too much silence.

Anthony backed away from the barricaded door.

"No," he whispered. "No, no, no—"

The office door exploded inward.

Not opened.

Exploded.

Wood splintered as Lucian’s shoulder drove through the weakened frame with brutal force.

Anthony screamed and fired blindly.

BANG.

The bullet ripped through a shelf and missed Lucian by inches.

Lucian crossed the room before Anthony could even adjust his aim.

One second, Anthony had space.

The next, Lucian slammed him into the wall hard enough to crack plaster.

The gun clattered across the floor.

Anthony gasped violently.

"WAIT—"

Lucian hit him.

Not wild.

Not sloppy.

Precise.

One brutal punch into Anthony’s ribs.

Anthony folded instantly, choking.

Theo entered behind Lucian and glanced around the room.

"Oh wow," he said. "You’re actually angry."

Anthony coughed, trying to breathe.

"L-Lucian—"

Lucian grabbed him by the collar and yanked him upright again.

His voice was low and flat.

"Where is Clara?"

Anthony’s eyes bulged.

"I don’t know!"

Lucian slammed him back into the wall.

"Try again."

"I swear!" Anthony’s voice broke. "I swear on—"

Lucian’s fist tightened in his shirt.

"Do not swear on anything. You sold a child."

Anthony shook violently. "I thought they wanted leverage on Vivienne. Money. Documents. I didn’t think they’d take her."

Theo crouched and picked up Anthony’s gun with two fingers, inspecting it.

"You sold a child’s route information to anonymous criminals and expected ethical behavior?"

Anthony looked hysterical. "They knew things. They knew my accounts. They knew about the file. I thought they were tied to Vivienne’s people!"

Lucian’s expression hardened.

"Names."

"I don’t have names!"

Wrong answer.

Lucian drove his fist into Anthony’s stomach.

Anthony dropped to his knees, retching.

Theo made a thoughtful sound.

"That was effective but technically not an answer extraction method."

Lucian looked down at Anthony.

"Who contacted you?"

Anthony wheezed.

"A broker. Encrypted messages. They called themselves Halcyon."

Theo’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

Lucian noticed. "You know it?"

Theo’s smile vanished.

"I’ve heard whispers. Private extraction group. Not official. Not mercenaries exactly. More like rich people’s nightmares with invoices."

Anthony looked up desperately.

"I didn’t know!"

Allison stepped into the office behind security just in time to see Anthony curled near the wall, blood at his mouth.

Her expression went still.

Anthony saw her and nearly broke.

"Allison!"

She stared at him coldly.

"You look terrible."

Theo barked out a laugh.

Anthony crawled half an inch toward her. "You have to help me."

Allison’s brows rose.

"I don’t actually."

"They’re going to kill me."

"You sold out a six-year-old."

"I DIDN’T KIDNAP HER!"

"No," Allison said, stepping closer slowly. "You just handed monsters a map and acted surprised when they used it."

Anthony looked like the words physically hit him.

"I was desperate."

Allison’s gaze hardened.

"Everyone is desperate at some point, Anthony. Not everyone chooses to become disgusting."

Lucian watched her.

Even now, in a rain-soaked warehouse office, with danger breathing through the walls, Allison Croft still knew how to land a sentence like a knife.

Anthony’s eyes filled with panic.

"I can tell you where the messages came from."

Lucian stepped forward. "Then start."

Anthony opened his mouth—

Theo moved first.

Fast.

"DOWN!"

Everyone dropped.

Bullets exploded through the warehouse windows.

GLASS SHATTERED EVERYWHERE.

The office erupted.

Wood splintered.

Metal screamed.

Allison ducked behind an overturned desk as Lucian grabbed her waist and dragged her behind a steel support beam.

Anthony screamed and curled into a ball.

Adrian’s security returned fire from below.

BANG. BANG. BANG.

Theo moved like he was built for chaos.

He rolled across the floor, came up behind the broken desk, and fired two controlled shots through the shattered window frame.

A man outside shouted.

Then went down.

Simone’s voice crackled through comms.

"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?"

Elias answered sharply, "Incoming hostile team. Stay in the vehicle!"

Simone snapped, "I am very comfortable staying in the vehicle, thank you!"

Another burst of gunfire tore through the wall.

Lucian pressed Allison behind him.

She looked up at him.

"This is not what I meant when I said be careful."

His jaw was tight. "Noted."

Anthony sobbed from the floor. "THEY FOUND ME!"

Allison shot him a look. "Yes, Anthony. That’s usually what happens when you invite consequences."

Theo glanced through the broken office window, rain running down his face.

"Three SUVs. Six visible. Probably more."

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

The loading dock below groaned as vehicles rolled in.

Three black SUVs pulled into the warehouse.

Doors opened.

Men stepped out.

Not random criminals.

Professional.

Body armor.

Military posture.

Suppressed rifles.

Allison’s stomach dropped.

"Oh."

Theo smiled slowly.

"Oh, finally."

Lucian’s voice turned deadly calm.

"Anthony."

Anthony whimpered.

Lucian didn’t look at him. "Tell me everything."

"I told you!"

"No," Lucian said. "You told me enough to stay alive for thirty seconds."

Theo glanced at him. "Generous."

The men below began moving in formation.

One looked up toward the shattered office window.

Then smiled.

A radio crackled in his hand.

"Target confirmed."

A pause.

Then—

"Kill everyone except Calloway."

Allison went cold.

Lucian’s face went colder.

Theo exhaled.

"Well," he said, flexing his fingers around his weapon. "That’s rude."

Then the first man reached the stairs.

Lucian moved before anyone else did.

He stepped out from cover, grabbed the metal filing tray from the desk, and hurled it down the stairwell just as the man reached the landing.

The tray smashed into the attacker’s face.

The man staggered.

Theo shot the weapon out of his hand.

A second attacker came up behind him.

Lucian met him halfway.

No gun.

No hesitation.

He caught the man’s wrist, twisted hard, and drove his elbow into the attacker’s throat. The man choked, stumbled, and Lucian slammed his head against the railing before kicking him down the steps.

Allison blinked.

Then looked at Theo.

"Does he always fight like that?"

Theo shot at another attacker and answered cheerfully, "Only when emotionally compromised."

Lucian barked, "Theo."

"Am I wrong?"

A man burst through the side door behind Allison.

She moved on instinct.

He reached for her.

Wrong choice.

Allison grabbed the stapler off the desk and smashed it into his wrist. When he grunted and lunged, she stepped inside his reach, drove her knee into his thigh, then slammed the heel of her palm under his chin.

His head snapped back.

She grabbed his arm, twisted, and used his own momentum to throw him into the desk.

He crashed hard.

Theo stared.

"Okay, Mrs. Calloway."

Allison grabbed a letter opener from the desk and pointed it at the fallen man.

"I have had a very long week."

Lucian looked back just long enough to see her standing over the attacker.

His expression shifted.

Pride.

Fear.

Attraction.

All at once.

"Allison," he said tightly.

"I’m behind cover."

"You are standing in the middle of the room."

"I’m cover-adjacent."

Anthony, still curled on the floor, sobbed, "You people are insane."

Allison looked down at him.

"And yet somehow you remain the biggest problem."

Another attacker climbed through the broken office window.

Theo met him with a grin.

"Hi."

The man swung.

Theo ducked, stepped in, and punched him once in the ribs, once in the jaw, then caught the man’s arm and flipped him over his shoulder onto the floor.

The attacker groaned.

Theo adjusted his cuff.

"Been waiting for that."

Lucian had no time to respond.

Two more men were coming up the stairs.

Adrian’s voice cut through comms.

"Upper level, hold position. Reinforcements moving."

Lucian grabbed Anthony by the collar and dragged him behind cover.

Anthony yelped.

"Why are you saving me?"

Lucian’s eyes were murderous.

"Because you’re useful."

Anthony swallowed.

"Fair."

Allison crouched beside them, breathing hard but steady.

Lucian looked at her wrists, her face, her posture.

"You’re hurt."

"I’m annoyed."

"That isn’t the same thing."

"It is today."

Theo fired twice more.

"Adrian’s team is breaching from the east!"

Below, the warehouse erupted into combat.

Adrian’s security poured in from the east door.

Halcyon’s men shifted formation instantly.

Professional.

Deadly.

But outnumbered now.

Gunfire echoed through the massive space.

Lucian used the chaos to yank Anthony upright.

"Move."

Anthony stumbled. "Where?"

"Out."

"They’ll kill me!"

Lucian shoved him forward.

"Then run convincingly."

Allison followed close behind while Theo covered their rear.

They pushed through the back office corridor, down a narrow metal stairwell slick with rainwater leaking from the roof.

Halfway down, a man appeared at the bottom.

He raised his weapon.

Allison grabbed the loose fire extinguisher from the wall and shoved it forward.

Lucian shot the canister.

White chemical spray exploded into the attacker’s face.

He shouted, blind.

Theo vaulted over the railing halfway down, landed with brutal force, and drove the man into the concrete.

Simone’s voice crackled.

"Did Theo just jump off something?"

Elias answered, sounding strained, "Unfortunately, yes."

Simone muttered, "Why was that hot?"

Allison shouted, "Focus!"

Lucian looked back at her.

"You heard that?"

"Yes, and I hate all of it."

They reached the loading dock.

Rain blew sideways through the open bay.

Two SUVs burned near the entrance.

Adrian’s men had three attackers restrained.

Others fled between shipping containers.

Anthony froze at the sight.

"No. No, those are the guys—those are them."

Lucian shoved him forward.

"Which one contacted you?"

Anthony scanned the chaos wildly.

Then his face went pale.

"Him."

He pointed toward a man standing near the far container row.

Tall.

Black tactical coat.

No helmet.

Calm.

Too calm.

The man turned as if he felt them looking.

His face was unreadable.

Then he smiled.

Not at Anthony.

At Lucian.

Theo stepped beside Lucian, breathing hard, eyes locked on the man.

"That’s not Halcyon."

Lucian’s jaw tightened.

"Who is he?"

Theo’s voice dropped.

"I don’t know."

The man lifted a phone to his ear.

Lucian’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Lucian answered without looking away.

The man across the warehouse spoke into his phone.

"Mr. Calloway."

Lucian’s voice was ice.

"Where is Clara?"

The man smiled wider.

"Alive."

Anthony started shaking.

Allison’s fingers tightened around Lucian’s sleeve.

The man continued.

"But not for long if you keep chasing the wrong people."

Lucian’s expression did not change.

"Name your terms."

The man looked past Lucian.

At Allison.

Then at Anthony.

Then back.

"No terms yet."

A pause.

"Just a lesson."

Lucian’s eyes narrowed.

"What lesson?"

The man’s smile faded.

"Anthony Morrison was bait."

Then every light in the warehouse cut out.

Darkness swallowed them.

A child’s voice came over the warehouse speakers, small and terrified.

"Daddy?"

Lucian went completely still.

Then the voice continued, cracking with fear—

"Please Hurry."
