The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife
Chapter 36: The Room Without Windows
Allison
Dark.
That was the first thing she understood.
Not shadows.
Not dim light.
Dark.
The kind that swallowed edges and made time feel wrong.
Allison’s head throbbed.
A slow, pulsing ache behind her eyes that made it hard to think straight. Her tongue felt dry. Her body heavy.
Drugged.
Her wrists burned next.
Rough rope. Tight enough to remind her every second that she wasn’t free.
She inhaled slowly.
Counted.
One.
Two.
Three.
Stay calm.
Her heart tried to sprint ahead of her.
She forced it back.
Where am I?
The air smelled faintly of disinfectant... and something older. Concrete. Closed space. No windows. No outside sound.
A mattress beneath her.
Cheap.
Thin.
Not meant for comfort.
She shifted slightly.
Pain shot through her shoulder.
"Okay," she whispered to herself. "Not dead."
Progress.
Her mind pushed past the fog.
Safe house.
The file.
The alarms—
Her breath hitched.
Everything going dark.
Hands grabbing her.
Lucian—
Her chest tightened.
No.
Focus.
Alive first.
Emotions later.
⸻
A click echoed through the room.
Light.
Soft at first.
Then stronger.
A door opened.
Footsteps.
Measured.
Confident.
Allison’s eyes adjusted slowly.
And then—
Vivienne Laurent-Cassel stepped into the room.
Perfect.
Untouched.
Dressed in black like she hadn’t just orchestrated a kidnapping.
Her gaze slid over Allison calmly.
"Oh," she said softly. "You’re finally awake."
Allison stared at her.
No panic.
No screaming.
Just cold awareness settling in.
"...Vivienne."
Vivienne smiled.
"That sounded almost surprised."
Allison’s voice came out hoarse but steady. "I was hoping you were just emotionally unstable. Not criminally."
Vivienne let out a soft laugh.
Behind her—
A second figure stepped forward.
Anthony Morrison.
Less polished than usual.
Hair disheveled.
Eyes wild.
Suit wrinkled like he hadn’t slept.
He looked at Allison like she was the center of everything that had gone wrong.
Because she was.
"Allison," he said.
Her jaw tightened.
"Where is Adrian?" she asked. "Where is Lucian? Where is everyone?"
Vivienne tilted her head slightly.
"Always straight to the point."
Anthony stepped closer, crouching just slightly in front of her.
"Don’t worry about them."
Allison’s eyes sharpened.
"That’s not reassuring."
Vivienne moved further into the room, heels clicking softly against the concrete.
"They’re alive," she said casually. "For now."
A beat.
"Unlike your situation."
Allison leaned back slightly against the mattress, testing the rope again.
No give.
"Kidnapping," she said calmly. "Bold move. Very on-brand for both of you."
Anthony’s mouth twisted. "You think this is a joke?"
"No," Allison said. "I think you’re desperate."
That hit.
Anthony’s expression snapped.
Vivienne raised a hand slightly.
Not touching him.
Just reminding him.
Control.
He stepped back.
Barely.
Allison’s gaze stayed on Vivienne.
"You always talk like you’re ten steps ahead," she said. "But you don’t look ahead. You look threatened."
Vivienne smiled.
Slow.
Cold.
"I look like someone who planned this before you even realized you were part of the board."
Allison let that sit.
Then said quietly—
"Then explain it."
Vivienne’s smile flickered.
"Explain what?"
"Why me," Allison said. "You were watching me before any of this. Before the dinner. Before Anthony spiraled. Before I even met Lucian properly."
Anthony frowned slightly.
Vivienne didn’t look at him.
Allison pressed.
"You had surveillance on me. Why?"
Silence.
Then—
Vivienne walked closer.
Closer.
Until she stood just out of reach.
Looking down at Allison like she was something... complicated.
"You really don’t know," she said.
Allison held her gaze.
"No."
Vivienne exhaled softly.
Almost amused.
"Then I suppose you deserve the courtesy of understanding why you’re here."
Anthony shifted. "Vivienne—"
She ignored him.
Of course she did.
Because this—
This was about her.
⸻
Vivienne (Flashback / Monologue)
"I met Lucian when we were children," Vivienne said, her voice soft but steady.
The room seemed to dim around her words.
"He was always... controlled. Even then. While other boys chased noise and attention, Lucian learned rooms. Learned people. Learned power without raising his voice."
Her lips curved faintly.
"I respected that."
A beat.
"Then I understood it."
Her eyes flicked to Allison.
"And then I decided I would match it."
Allison stayed quiet.
Vivienne continued.
"Our families aligned naturally. Laurent-Cassel. Calloway. It was expected. Discussed without being announced. We moved in the same spaces, the same events, the same long-term conversations about alliances that outlived marriages."
She stepped back slowly, pacing just enough to let the words breathe.
"Lucian never chased me," she said. "But he never dismissed me either."
A pause.
"That’s the difference between most men and Lucian. He doesn’t pretend. He simply... doesn’t choose until something is worth choosing."
Her gaze sharpened.
"And then you appeared."
Allison’s fingers curled slightly.
Vivienne’s voice cooled.
"Quiet. Efficient. Invisible to the wrong people. And suddenly—very visible to the right one."
Lucian.
Allison felt it in her chest.
Even now.
Vivienne saw that.
Of course she did.
"I started watching you because I didn’t understand you," Vivienne said. "You didn’t behave like someone climbing. You didn’t attach yourself to power the way most do."
Her lips thinned.
"And yet Lucian noticed you."
A beat.
Then—
"He chose you."
The room went still.
Allison swallowed.
Vivienne’s eyes darkened.
"And I do not lose to something I do not understand."
There it was.
Not love.
Not really.
Control.
Possession.
Expectation turned into obsession.
"You weren’t supposed to matter," Vivienne said softly. "You were supposed to be temporary. A distraction. Something Lucian would outgrow."
Her voice dropped.
"But then you didn’t leave."
Allison met her gaze.
"I’m not good at leaving things unfinished."
Vivienne smiled.
Sharp.
"Yes. I’ve noticed."
⸻
Safe House — Chaos
Lucian heard the alarms before he understood what they meant.
Red lights.
Security breach tones.
Voices shouting over comms.
Everything moved at once.
"Down!" someone shouted.
Lucian grabbed Allison’s arm—
Then everything went dark.
For half a second—
Nothing.
Then—
Chaos.
When the lights came back on—
Allison was gone.
⸻
Present — Safe House Aftermath
"No."
Lucian’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Adrian stood in the center of the room, already moving, already commanding.
"Lock it down," he snapped. "Every exit. Every camera. Replay everything."
Elias’s fingers flew across the tablet.
"System was hit externally. Power disruption lasted 3.2 seconds. Enough for a controlled extraction."
Theo’s expression had gone completely still.
Dangerous still.
Simone looked around wildly. "Where is she?"
No one answered.
Because they already knew.
"She was taken," Theo said.
Lucian turned.
Fast.
"By who."
Theo met his gaze.
"You already know."
Vivienne.
Anthony.
Lucian’s jaw clenched so tight it looked like it might crack.
Adrian’s voice cut through.
"We don’t guess. We confirm."
Elias pulled up external feeds.
"Vehicle spotted leaving perimeter during blackout. No plate. Switching routes. Signal masked."
Simone pressed her hands to her head. "Oh my God—"
Theo moved toward the door. "We don’t have time to panic."
Lucian grabbed his jacket.
"I’m going."
Adrian stepped in front of him.
"No. You’re thinking emotionally."
"I’m thinking efficiently."
"You’re thinking like a man who wants to break something," Adrian said. "And I need you thinking like someone who wants her alive."
Lucian went still.
For one second.
Then nodded once.
Tight.
Controlled.
"Then tell me what to do."
Adrian looked at Elias.
"Track every possible route out of here. Cross-reference with known Laurent-Cassel properties and Morrison holdings."
Elias nodded. "Already pulling."
Theo’s voice came sharp. "They won’t take her somewhere obvious."
"No," Adrian said. "But they’ll take her somewhere they believe we won’t find quickly."
Simone looked at them. "Can someone please say something comforting?"
Theo didn’t look at her.
"She’s not dead."
Simone swallowed. "That’s not comforting."
"It’s the truth."
Lucian’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
He answered immediately.
"Lucian."
Static.
Then—
Allison’s voice.
Faint.
Breathing uneven.
But there.
Alive.
"...Lucian?"
The room stopped.
Simone covered her mouth.
Theo’s eyes sharpened.
Lucian’s grip tightened on the phone.
"Allison. Where are you?"
A soft exhale.
"I’d love to tell you," she said, voice dry despite everything. "Unfortunately, I didn’t get the tour."
Behind her—
Vivienne’s voice.
Calm.
Close.
"Keep talking."
Lucian’s eyes went cold.
Adrian stepped closer, gesturing for Elias.
Trace the call.
Elias was already moving.
Typing.
Running signal triangulation.
Allison continued.
"They’re both here," she said quietly. "Vivienne and Anthony. Anthony looks like he hasn’t slept in a week. You were right about that."
Lucian’s voice dropped. "Are you hurt?"
"Pride mostly."
Theo almost smiled.
Vivienne’s voice again—
"Time’s up."
Allison inhaled.
Then—
"Lucian—"
The line cut.
Dead.
Elias looked up.
"I have a location."
Everyone turned.
"Industrial district," he said. "Old clinic facility. Private ownership. Recently reactivated."
Adrian’s expression went ice cold.
"Prepare the cars."
Lucian was already moving.
Theo followed.
Simone grabbed her jacket.
"No way you’re leaving me behind."
Adrian didn’t argue.
Because there was no time left for arguments.
⸻
Closing Cliffhanger
Back in the dark room—
Vivienne crouched in front of Allison.
"You’re calm," she said.
"I’ve had worse mornings."
Vivienne smiled faintly.
"We’ll see how long that lasts."
Anthony stood behind her.
Watching.
Waiting.
Unraveling.
Allison leaned her head back against the wall.
Eyes steady.
Heart racing.
But controlled.
Because somewhere out there—
Lucian was coming.
And Adrian.
And Theo.
And when they arrived—
This wouldn’t be a conversation anymore.
It would be a war.
