The Billionaire Who Stole His Wife

Chapter 34: The File Behind the Wine Wall

  • Next Chapter

For one second, no one moved.

The safe house sat in perfect morning quiet, wrapped in trees, guarded by men with earpieces and calm faces.

But inside the living room—

The air changed.

Adrian’s phone remained in his hand, the message glowing on the screen.

Unauthorized security reset detected at Morrison residence.

Sharon looked like the blood had drained out of her body.

"He knows," she whispered.

Allison’s eyes slid to her.

"Knows what exactly?"

Sharon swallowed, both hands tightening around the mug she hadn’t taken a sip from.

"That I told you something important."

Simone, who had been standing near the fireplace with her arms folded, lifted a brow.

"Girl, that is not specific enough for the panic level you’re giving us."

Sharon’s lips trembled. "The file."

Adrian’s gaze sharpened.

"The one behind the wine wall," he said.

Sharon nodded. "If he’s resetting security, he’s either locking the house down or letting someone in without the normal system logging it."

Lucian’s jaw flexed once. "He’s sending someone for the file."

Theo pushed away from the window, his easy expression fading into something colder.

"Or going after it himself."

Allison looked between them. "So we get there first."

Every eye moved to her.

Simone gave a slow smile. "There she is."

Lucian’s attention landed on Allison immediately. "No."

Allison turned to him.

One brow arched.

"Did you just tell me no?"

Lucian did not flinch. Brave man.

"Yes."

Theo made a small sound that might’ve been a laugh. "Bold choice."

Lucian ignored him, eyes still on Allison. "Anthony is unstable. If he’s making a move now, it’s because he’s desperate. Desperate men are unpredictable."

Allison stepped closer to him, her smile sharp enough to cut silk.

"Lucian, I was fake-married to the man. I’m familiar with his terrible decision-making."

"That doesn’t mean you should walk into it."

"I’m not walking into anything. I’m going with a team, my father, and apparently half the emotionally repressed billionaires in Boston."

Simone raised a hand. "I’m not a billionaire, but I’m emotionally prepared and wearing shoes suitable for witnessing crimes."

Adrian’s eyes flicked to her.

Simone lowered her hand. "Respectfully."

Sharon looked horrified. "Allison, you can’t go back there."

Allison turned to her. "I lived there. I know the halls, the blind spots, the staff patterns, where Martha keeps emergency pearls when she needs to feel superior—"

Simone blinked. "Emergency pearls?"

"Yes."

"That is both insane and exactly what I expected."

Lucian moved closer, voice lowering. "Allison."

That tone.

The one that wasn’t command, but concern dressed in control.

It softened something in her, but only for a second.

She met his gaze. "You told me to pay attention to how you move."

He went still.

"So pay attention to how I move," she continued. "I’m not reckless. I’m not running back there because I need closure. I’m going because if that file exists, Anthony is going to destroy it, move it, or use it to hurt someone else."

Adrian studied her in silence.

Then nodded once.

"She’s right."

Lucian looked at him sharply.

Adrian’s expression did not change. "I didn’t say I liked it."

"You’re allowing it?"

"I don’t allow my daughter anything," Adrian said flatly. "She makes decisions. I decide how many men need to surround those decisions with weapons and legal coverage."

Simone whispered to Allison, "That was weirdly loving."

Allison whispered back, "That’s his version of a hug."

Sharon looked between them like they were all insane.

Maybe they were.

But Allison felt clear.

Sharper than she had all morning.

The kindness she had shown Sharon had been real. The mercy had been real.

But mercy did not mean softness.

Not with Anthony.

Not anymore.

Adrian turned to Elias. "Who do we have closest to the Morrison property?"

Elias checked his tablet. "Two outside perimeter. One inside the service staff through catering rotation. Another team can be there in eight minutes."

Theo’s gaze sharpened. "Morrison’s unauthorized reset may have disabled standard monitoring, but not physical eyes."

"Correct," Elias said. "Our catering contact reports the west service entrance is suddenly ’maintenance only.’"

Lucian’s face hardened. "That’s the wine room side."

Sharon nodded quickly. "Yes. The private tasting room is off the west hall."

Adrian slid his phone into his pocket. "We leave now."

Lucian looked back at Allison. His eyes were dark, controlled, but the worry was there beneath it.

She saw it.

And because she saw it, she stepped closer and lowered her voice.

"I’ll stay behind you if things get dangerous."

His brow lifted slightly. "That was almost reassuring."

"Don’t get used to it."

"I wouldn’t dare."

Their eyes held one second too long.

Theo noticed.

Of course he noticed.

So did Simone.

Simone leaned toward Sharon and murmured, "They do this a lot now."

Sharon, pale and overwhelmed, whispered, "Do what?"

"Make tension everyone else’s problem."

⸻

The ride to the Morrison estate was quiet but loaded.

Allison sat beside Lucian in the back of the lead SUV. Adrian sat across from them, reading live updates on his phone. Theo rode in the vehicle behind with Elias and Simone, though Allison suspected Theo had only agreed because Lucian had stared at him long enough to make the alternative annoying.

Sharon remained at the safe house under guard.

She had given them the panel location, the sequence of bottles Anthony had once moved, and the warning that the hidden compartment had a manual lock behind a false temperature-control dial.

"He thinks people don’t notice him when he’s proud of himself," she’d said quietly before they left. "But he always looks at the thing he wants to hide."

Allison had believed her.

Because she knew Anthony too.

The Morrison estate appeared through the tinted window like a polished corpse.

White stone.

Perfect hedges.

Tall windows.

A house built to impress people who didn’t know what happened behind its doors.

Allison’s stomach tightened.

Lucian noticed immediately.

His hand shifted beside hers on the seat.

Not touching.

Offering.

She looked at it.

Then at him.

For a second, pride argued with comfort.

Comfort won.

She slid her fingers against his.

Lucian’s hand closed around hers.

Firm.

Warm.

Steady.

Adrian looked up.

Allison stared back at him like she dared him to comment.

He didn’t.

Wise man.

The SUV stopped near the service drive, not the main entrance.

Elias’s voice came through the earpiece Lucian had handed her before they left.

"Perimeter is clear. Internal staff movement reduced. House appears occupied by Martha Morrison, Richard Morrison, and limited staff. Anthony not confirmed inside."

Allison frowned. "Not confirmed?"

Lucian’s thumb brushed once over her knuckles. "He may be watching from somewhere else."

"That tracks. He enjoys pretending he’s a mastermind when really he’s a man with Wi-Fi and unresolved mommy issues."

Adrian actually paused.

Then said, "Accurate."

Lucian’s mouth twitched.

They exited quickly.

No grand entrance this time.

No chandeliers.

No audience.

Just the west side of the Morrison estate, a service hall, and the quiet movement of trained people taking positions like shadows.

Allison walked in with Lucian at her side and Adrian half a step behind.

That arrangement lasted five seconds before Adrian moved ahead.

Allison rolled her eyes.

"He’s allergic to not leading."

Lucian said softly, "So are you."

"I lead better."

"I’m not arguing."

"Smart."

They entered through the service corridor.

The staff who saw them either looked away or stepped aside immediately. No one wanted to be the person who blocked Adrian Croft after last night.

Especially not while Allison Croft walked behind him looking calm enough to be catastrophic.

They were halfway down the west hall when Martha appeared.

Of course she did.

Dressed in pale lavender silk, pearls at her throat, fury carved into every line of her face.

"You."

Allison stopped.

Lucian stopped with her.

Adrian turned slowly.

Martha’s eyes flicked to him and lost a fraction of courage.

Only a fraction.

"This is private property," Martha snapped.

Adrian’s voice was calm. "Then call the police."

Martha’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Allison smiled faintly. "Please do. I’d love to discuss property rights, fraud, assault, and illegal confinement of records in one conversation."

Martha’s eyes flashed. "You ungrateful little—"

Lucian stepped forward.

Not much.

Just enough.

Martha stopped.

Allison tilted her head. "Careful. Last time you finished that sentence, it cost you your reputation."

Martha’s face flushed.

"You think you’ve won?"

"No," Allison said. "I think I stopped playing with people who cheat badly."

Adrian looked mildly impatient. "Move."

Martha didn’t.

For one tense second, it looked like she might actually attempt to stand her ground.

Then footsteps sounded behind them, and two of Adrian’s security men appeared at the corridor entrance.

Martha stepped aside.

Simone’s voice crackled through Allison’s earpiece from the SUV. "Please tell me you verbally slapped her."

Allison murmured, "Lightly."

Lucian glanced at her, amused despite himself.

They reached the private tasting room.

Allison had only been inside twice before.

Anthony loved this room because it made him feel cultured. Dark wood shelving lined the walls, each bottle arranged like a symbol of taste he had purchased rather than earned. Leather chairs sat near a low table. A small climate-control screen glowed beside the west wall.

Adrian looked around once.

"Where?"

Allison moved toward the wine wall before Lucian could stop her.

He followed anyway.

She studied the shelves.

"Sharon said third row, left section. Move the two Bordeaux bottles, then press behind the center label."

Lucian reached first.

Allison shot him a look.

He paused.

"Fine," he said.

She moved the bottles herself.

Behind the center label was a slight indentation.

She pressed.

Nothing.

Her brows pulled together.

"Of course," she muttered. "Why would a secret rich-man wall be simple?"

Lucian leaned closer, shoulder brushing hers.

"Temperature dial," he said.

Allison glanced down at the small brass dial beneath the shelf.

She turned it left.

Nothing.

Right.

A soft click sounded.

The wall panel released by half an inch.

Allison smiled. "See? Teamwork."

Lucian looked down at her. "You were about to insult the wall."

"It deserved it."

Adrian stepped forward as Lucian pulled the panel open.

Inside was a narrow safe.

Mechanical.

Old-fashioned.

Adrian’s expression shifted.

"Interesting."

Allison looked at him. "You know that face. That’s your ’I’m about to do something expensive’ face."

"I don’t have faces."

"You have at least three. Terrifying, disappointed, and tax fraud."

Lucian turned away slightly like he was trying not to laugh.

Adrian ignored them both and looked at one of his men. "Open it."

The specialist moved in.

The room went silent except for the faint metallic work of tools.

Thirty seconds.

A minute.

Then—

Click.

The safe opened.

Inside sat a black leather folio, a stack of sealed envelopes, and two encrypted drives.

Adrian smiled.

It was small.

Devastating.

"Hello, Anthony."

Lucian reached for the folio.

Allison’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A text.

Put it back.

Her blood went cold.

She showed Lucian.

His eyes hardened.

A second message came.

You don’t know what’s in there.

Then a third.

Walk away, Allison. Last warning.

Allison stared at the screen.

Then slowly smiled.

Lucian’s voice was low. "Do not respond."

Allison typed.

Lucian looked at her. "Allison."

She hit send.

You’re terrible at warnings.

Lucian closed his eyes briefly.

Adrian glanced over. "Was that necessary?"

"Yes."

"No," Lucian said at the same time.

The phone buzzed again.

You think this is funny?

Allison typed faster.

No. I think you are.

Theo’s voice came through the earpiece, delighted. "Oh, she’s texting him. Fantastic."

Lucian muttered, "Not helpful."

Then the house alarm blared.

Loud.

Violent.

Red lights flashed along the ceiling.

A voice shouted from the hall.

"Movement at west exterior!"

Lucian grabbed Allison’s hand immediately.

Adrian took the folio and drives.

"Out," he said.

They moved fast.

The corridor erupted into controlled chaos. Security shifted formation around them. Martha was shouting somewhere near the stairs. Staff scattered. The alarm kept screaming.

Allison’s heart pounded, but her mind stayed clear.

"Anthony triggered it," she said.

Lucian pulled her closer as they turned the corner. "Or his people did."

"Either way, dramatic. He always did need attention."

A sharp crack sounded outside.

Not a gunshot.

Maybe a vehicle backfire.

Maybe not.

Lucian’s body moved before her brain finished processing, pulling her behind him and against the wall.

Adrian’s voice snapped, "Secure the exit!"

Allison looked up at Lucian, pressed close enough to feel the hard line of his chest, his hand firm at her waist.

"This is a terrible time," she said breathlessly, "but I think you’re enjoying protecting me a little."

His eyes flicked down to hers.

Even now.

Even in chaos.

"You make it difficult not to."

Her pulse betrayed her.

"Flirt later," Adrian said coldly from ahead.

Simone’s voice burst through the earpiece. "Wait, were they flirting?"

Theo answered, "Definitely."

"I hate all of you," Lucian said.

Allison smiled despite the alarm.

Then another shout echoed down the hall.

"Exit blocked!"

Adrian stopped.

Lucian’s expression changed.

Theo’s voice turned sharp. "Service drive has a black SUV cutting off the gate. Two men. Possibly armed."

Adrian looked at Lucian.

Lucian looked at Allison.

The folio was clutched in Adrian’s hand.

Anthony had made his first aggressive move.

And he had chosen badly.

Allison’s smile faded.

Her voice went quiet.

"Okay," she said. "Now I’m irritated."

Lucian’s gaze stayed on her.

"Good."

Adrian looked toward the side corridor.

"There’s another way out?"

Allison nodded slowly.

"The old garden corridor. Martha hated it because it smells like soil and poor people."

Lucian stared at her.

Allison shrugged. "Her words, not mine."

Adrian’s mouth tightened. "Lead."

Allison stepped forward.

Lucian caught her wrist gently.

She looked back.

His voice dropped for only her.

"Stay close."

For once, she didn’t argue.

She nodded.

Then Allison Croft turned down the hidden garden corridor of the house that had once tried to bury her—

with her father carrying Anthony’s secrets,

Lucian at her back,

and Anthony’s threat closing in from outside.

The game had officially changed.

And this time, Allison was done being polite.
