The Billionaire Alpha's Unexpected Mate
Chapter 96: Devotion In The Dark
Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Devotion In The Dark
Alexander waited until Oliver and Zoey had rounded the corner, their footsteps fading against the thick Persian runner, before he looked down at Iris.
"Come," Alexander whispered, his voice warm against her ear. "Let us go," he murmured softly.
He led her away from the grand foyer, guiding her up a sweeping staircase carved from dark grey granite and down a wide, vaulted hallway lined with heavy oak doors and iron wall sconces. Every step they took felt deliberate, echoing softly through the cavernous quiet of the estate.
They finally stopped in front of a pair of massive double doors constructed from dark, heavily grained mahogany, reinforced with intricate, blackened iron filigree that hinted at centuries of craftsmanship. Even before it was opened, the doorway radiated an undeniable, heavy aura of absolute authority.
Alexander released her hand just long enough to turn a heavy iron handle, pushing the double doors inward.
Iris stepped across the threshold, her breath catching in her throat as she took in the space.
It was a sprawling, magnificent master suite that stretched out beneath a high, timber-beamed ceiling. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic, breathtaking view of the misty Seattle mountains dropping away into the dark ocean beyond.
A massive stone fireplace dominated one wall, currently unlit but radiating the residual warmth of a hearth. Rich leather armchairs, dark velvet draperies, and a king-sized bed draped in heavy charcoal furs filled the room, exuding a breathtaking, uncompromising level of luxury.
Yet, despite the beauty, Iris could feel it instantly—the room screamed raw, unadulterated male dominance. Every detail, from the heavy wood tones to the lack of fragile ornamentation, bore the unmistakable stamp of an apex predator who refused to compromise his space for anyone.
Until now.
Iris slowly turned around, her eyes tracking the tall, imposing figure of the man who owned it all. Alexander had closed the heavy doors behind them, locking them with a quiet, decisive click that echoed loudly in the stillness of the room.
He was standing just a few feet away, his broad shoulders filling the space, his piercing blue eyes fixed entirely on her as if she were the only living soul in the world.
"Who..." Iris’s voice faltered slightly, her throat suddenly dry. She gestured vaguely toward the sprawling, luxurious quarters with her free hand. "Whose room is this?"
Alexander did not hesitate. His gaze darkened, a slow, predatory intensity burning in the depths of his eyes as he took one measured step closer to her, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. He stood directly over her, his imposing shadow enveloping her completely.
"It is my room," Alexander replied, his voice dropping into a low, resonant rumble that vibrated straight through the floorboards and settled deep in her chest. He reached out and gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "And you will be staying here. With me."
Iris stared at him in absolute shock, her lips parted as her eyes widened in complete disbelief. The sheer weight of his declaration hung between them in the silent room, suffocating in its possessive finality.
"Staying here with you?" she repeated, her voice pitching slightly higher than she intended.
"Yes," Alexander answered instantly, his tone flat and unyielding.
Iris stepped back a fraction, gesturing vaguely toward the massive, intimidating suite around them. "I thought I would be having my own room once I got here. When we were outside, Derrick literally said everything had been prepared for me. I assumed that meant guest quarters."
Alexander’s blue eyes narrowed into sharp, dangerous slits as he tracked her retreat. The hesitation in her posture, the instinctual urge to put physical distance between them—he clearly did not like it one bit. A subtle, dangerous tension crept into the broad line of his shoulders, the air in the bedroom seeming to plunge several degrees.
"Iris," he said, his voice dropping into a low, quiet register that made the hairs on her arms stand up. "Do you mind telling me why you are being so hesitant about staying in my room?"
Iris let out a long, shuddering sigh, instinctively dropping her gaze to the dark lapels of his suit jacket to avoid the sheer intensity burning in his eyes.
"Because we aren’t dating, Alexander," she murmured, crossing her arms tightly over her chest as if to shield herself from his overwhelming aura.
"We haven’t even had a normal conversation that didn’t involve ancient curses, angry pack members, or secret societies. I understand that you keep saying I’m your mate, and I’m trying to grasp what that means. But I am human. Yesterday I was worrying about midterms and rent. Walking straight into your bedroom like this... it’s just weird."
Alexander took a single, deliberate step forward, closing the distance she had created between them. Before she could step back again, he reached out, his long, warm fingers cupping her chin with firm, undeniable authority. He lifted her face, forcing her eyes to meet his intense, unblinking gaze.
"In my world, Iris," Alexander said softly, his voice vibrating with a deep, ancient gravity, "a mate is not a girlfriend. It is not a casual agreement. It is the equivalent of a spouse in your human understanding—only far more permanent. You belong to me, and I belong to you. We have already shared a bed. You bear my mark stamped into your skin." His thumb caressed the tight line of her jawline, sending a sharp, tingling shock straight down her spine. "So of course we share a room. What is there to make it weird?"
Iris held his gaze, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths as her heart thundered wildly against her ribs. The physical reality of him—his scent, his warmth, his terrifying height—affected her in ways she couldn’t rationalize or control.
"I just need time, Alexander," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly under the weight of his stare. "I need time to just... get used to all of this. Everything has changed in forty-eight hours. Sharing a bedroom with you right now is a massive step, and I just... I need to take baby steps for now. Please."
Alexander stared down at her, the muscle in his jaw ticking as his inner beast fought against her resistance. His possessive nature reared its ugly head, every instinct screaming at him to keep her confined to his immediate presence where she was safe, where she was his.
He let out a heavy, resonant sigh that sounded almost like a restrained growl. Then, moving faster than her human eyes could fully register, his hands swept around her waist, locking behind her back and hauling her flush against his chest.
Iris gasped, her hands flying up to rest against his broad, solid chest as the breath was knocked out of her. She could feel the hard, unyielding muscle beneath his suit, the steady, heavy thump of his heart, and the sheer heat radiating from him like a furnace.
"I will not lie to you, Iris—I am not happy about this request," Alexander admitted, his baritone rumbling deep within his chest, directly beneath her palms. He leaned down, his face mere inches from hers, his hot breath fanning across her lips.
"But I have to warn you early, and remind you of what I am. I am a Lycan. We do not play games when it comes to our mates. And it is physically, instinctively agonizing for us to remain apart from them once we have found them, claimed them, and marked them."
His grip around her waist tightened just enough to press her hips firmly against his, leaving zero space between them.
"I can allow you to take the baby steps you need," he murmured, his blue eyes darkening until the iris was almost black, a thread of crimson flickered around his pupil. "But not for long, Iris. Because keeping my hands off you is already becoming entirely impossible."
Being held this close to him unraveled something deep and dangerous inside her core. A sudden, heavy ache settled low in her belly, sending a wave of electric heat pooling between her thighs. She swallowed hard, instinctively pressing her legs together to maintain her sanity against the overwhelming tide of purely physical desire crashing through her.
Alexander’s sharp senses caught the subtle change instantly—he heard the rapid spike in her pulse, smelled the sudden, intoxicating change in her scent, and felt the tiny shudder that rippled through her frame.
A slow, devastatingly handsome smile curved his lips, lighting up his harsh features with a wicked, triumphant charm. Yet, even he was faring little better than she was. His own breathing had turned thick and ragged, his pupils fully dilated as his ancient biology screamed at him to take what was his.
Unable to withstand the pull a second longer, Alexander tilted his head, leaned down, and aggressively claimed her lips.
Iris let out a soft, helpless hum against his mouth, her feeble resolve vanishing into thin air. Her arms slid up his chest, wrapping around his neck, her fingers tangling into the thick, dark hair at the nape of his neck to pull him down closer.
