Chapter 85: Chapter 85: The War That Began With Mates

Iris opened her mouth to push back, to call it madness, but Alexander cut her off before she could formulate the words.

"They will come for you, Iris. Not to negotiate, and not out of curiosity. They will come to erase you to ensure my line ends with me. Or they might use you as leverage, or to tear you apart simply to watch me burn. That is why this apartment is no longer a home—it is an open target. You will be safer behind the wards of Blackthorne Estate than you will ever be within ten miles of this city."

A sharp, incredulous breath escaped Iris. She stepped directly into his space, tilting her head back to look him dead in the eye, refusing to yield an inch despite the sheer physical threat he posed.

"I told you before, Alexander: I am not going anywhere with you. You don’t get to step into a person’s life and decide that because you have absurd wealth, because you happen to be stronger than everyone else, because you carry three thousand years of baggage and power, that you own the board! You don’t get to dictate my life!"

Her voice cracked slightly on the last word, a single tear of pure, overwhelmed frustration brimming at the corner of her eye, but she held her ground.

"I have spent four years building a future here!" she spat. "Working two jobs, studying until three in the morning, trying to build something that belongs to me. And you expect me to throw it all in the trash because you walked in and declared I’m your mate?"

"I expect you to stay alive long enough to have a future at all!"

The sudden power in his voice didn’t rise in volume, but it reverberated through the floorboards, settling into the marrow of her bones. Iris froze, the sheer impact of his tone cutting off her air.

Alexander closed the remaining inch between them, his shadow fully engulfing her.

"I told you before, Iris," he murmured, his voice dropping into a rough, velvet cadence that vibrated in his chest. "You are not coming with me because I wish to lock you in a tower or control your choices." His blue eyes searched hers, desperate and unyielding all at once.

"You are coming with me because I have seen what the entities hunting my bloodline do to things I care about. I have buried enough of my life in the dirt."

She met his gaze, her breath coming in short, uneven hitches. "It still doesn’t give you the right. You can’t just claim me."

"I am not claiming a title, Iris," he said softly, stepping closer still. His sheer height forced her head back, her neck arched as she held his gaze. "I am stating an absolute law of our existence. I am your mate."

He leaned down slightly, his voice dropping to a harsh, quiet truth that seemed meant only for her ears. "If I were the monster your mind is trying to paint me as, I could wrap my hand around your waist and remove you from this room right now. Your consent would not change the outcome. I could carry you to my estate and lock the gates, and no force on this earth could stop me."

Iris’s eyes widened, a sudden spike of panic striking her heart.

Alexander’s expression hardened, but the coldness was directed inward, not at her. "But I am not doing that."

Something shifted behind his eyes—the harsh, ancient darkness softening into something raw and fiercely protective. It didn’t make him look any less dangerous, but it made the intent behind the danger painfully clear.

"I know this is alien to you," he said gently, his knuckles brushing within a hairsbreadth of her cheek without actually making contact.

"You do not know our laws. You do not know the ancient customs, or the terror that accompanies the bond. You think a mate is a human concept—a romance, a preference, a partner you choose over coffee on a Sunday afternoon."

He took a slow breath, his chest brushing the fabric of her blouse.

"To us, a mate is not a preference or a casual companion. A mate is the anchor to one’s sanity. It is power, shared vitality, it is lineage, it is the soul bound across centuries. To touch an Alpha’s mate is to declare a war of total extermination." He paused, his blue eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch.

His jaw tightening as if forcing out a memory heavy with ashes. "And historically, Iris....mates are the very catalyst for war itself."

Iris’s brows pulled together, her hands dropping slowly to her sides, her fingers clutching the fabric of her skirt. "What does that mean?"

"The conflict that devastated my kind—the conflict the survivors call the Great Purge—did not begin over territory," Alexander said, his gaze distant, as if he were staring directly into the ashes of centuries long past. "It did not begin over gold, or power, or the inherent hatred the lower packs held for the purebreds."

He brought his eyes back to hers, dark and heavy. "It began with mates."

He looked past her for a fraction of a second, staring at the blank wall as if seeing through time itself.

"Thousands of years ago, entire empires burned because an Alpha believed another had laid claim to what the moon had destined for him." Alexander murmured.

"Kings were slaughtered in their sleep over women who carried the mark of a rival bloodline. Lords murdered their own blood brothers over females who belonged to rival lineages. Great alliances that had stood for a millennium dissolved into bloody massacres within a single night because of the madness the bond induces when threatened....because of a broken mate bond."

His eyes focused back on her, intense and dark. "And when a human was brought into that crossfire... when a human carried the core of an Alpha line... the hunting began. The lower packs viewed it as a desecration of blood purity, and the humans didn’t take it lightly. That hatred festered for centuries until it exploded into mass slaughter. That war lasted three generations. And when the ash finally settled, my family was all that remained of the original bloodlines."

The room was utterly silent. There was a quiet, crushing grief underneath his words—there was something in the absolute, bone-deep weariness of his voice that hit Iris like a physical blow. In that quiet moment, she caught a glimpse of the terrifying truth: he wasn’t just making up stories to scare her. He was speaking of memories. He was talking about blood he had likely washed off his own hands.

Alexander leaned down, his face inches from hers, his breath warm against her skin. "You have no idea what you are to me, Iris."

For the first time since he had walked through her door, the absolute control slipped. Something completely unguarded and terrifyingly open flickered across his features.

"You..." He stopped, his throat working as he swallowed down a wave of raw emotion, his jaw clenching tightly as if the words were tearing through him to get out. "You are my entire life. Everything before you was simply waiting."

Iris went completely still.

Her lips parted, but her mind went utterly blank. The razor-sharp arguments she had spent the last ten minutes sharpening turned to dust in her throat.

What was a human girl supposed to say when a man with three thousand years of bloody history looking through his eyes told her, with absolute and terrifying sincerity, that she was the reason he breathed?

Her heart began to hammer so loudly against her ribs she felt certain he could hear every ragged beat. Unable to handle the sheer intensity radiating from him, she looked away first, her eyes dropping to the floor between them.

"Iris."

Zoey’s quiet, trembling voice broke the suffocating spell.

Iris turned her head toward her roommate. Zoey was standing up from the couch now, her arms wrapped tightly around her middle, looking remarkably small in the corner of their cramped living room.

"I know I’m probably not supposed to interject," Zoey began, her voice shaking slightly before she found her footing. She shot a quick, tentative glance at Alexander, whose face had instantly smoothed back into a mask of unreadable stone.

"I know this is... way beyond anything we ever talked about when we signed this lease for the apartment. And I know I’m just the human roommate who digs up weird stuff on the internet."

Zoey stepped around the coffee table, her eyes fixed firmly on Iris. "But you’re my best friend. And whatever you decide to do—whether you stay here and lock the doors or go with him— I’m staying right beside you a hundred percent. But Iris... we have to be honest with ourselves right now."

Iris waited, her chest heaving slightly as she tried to catch her breath.

"We don’t know a damn thing," Zoey said, letting out a small, breathless laugh that sounded border-line hysterical. "Literally nothing. Everything I thought I knew about werewolves came from late-night movies, trashy fantasy novels, and old forum posts. And in the last hour, we’ve learned that half of what I dug up isn’t even close to the truth."
