The instrument beside him suddenly emitted a sharp sound, causing him to panic, thinking he had touched something he shouldn’t have, and quickly withdrew his hand.

Just as Kiya was feeling uneasy and at a loss, a chaotic sound of footsteps approached from behind him, while the patient in the next room began to breathe rapidly, and the data on the display jumped erratically. Several doctors surrounded the patient to perform emergency resuscitation.

"Sir, we’re going to resuscitate the patient, please leave," the nurse said to Kiya.

Through his mask, Kiya said, "No, I want to stay with my wife! I won’t disturb you." Kiya refused to relinquish this rare close contact with Paige Desmond.

The patient’s condition was critical, and the nurse couldn’t bother with Kiya anymore, focusing on saving the patient. Soon, a piercing, unvarying sound echoed in the room, and the doctor regretfully shook his head before finally covering the patient with a white sheet.

A vibrant life, from birth to death, in just a few seconds, came empty and left empty.

Kiya was particularly saddened; he couldn’t bear the sight of death.

"Sir, it’s time for you to leave," the nurse came to urge him again.

Kiya leaned down slightly, his hands gently resting on the edge of the bed, touched her forehead with his lips, and whispered a few words in her ear.

He hoped that his words would reach Paige Desmond.

...

Kiya walked out of the ICU, where Adrian Desmond was standing in the hallway.

Adrian Desmond looked at Kiya, his brows tightly furrowed, and asked, "Is Paige alright?"

Kiya took off the mask from his face and relayed the doctor’s words to Adrian Desmond, "As long as she gets through the danger period of three days, she’ll be safe."

Adrian Desmond looked at Kiya, frowning, and reprimanded him, "How did you protect Paige? It’s only been a few days, and this kind of thing happened?"

"I didn’t want it either..." Kiya said weakly.

"..."

Kiya asked, "Do you have a cigarette?"

Adrian Desmond took out a pack of cigarettes and threw it to Kiya.

"I’m going downstairs to get some fresh air." Kiya felt suffocated.

Adrian Desmond glanced back at him without stopping him.

At four o’clock in the morning, the temperature was comfortable and cool, with the hospital lawn empty of people.

Kiya sat on a wooden bench, looking at the Inpatient Department Building, most windows pitch-black, with only a few rooms lit by dim lights.

Kiya didn’t know which room Paige Desmond was in; he stared for a long time, took out a cigarette from the pack, lit it, and smoked it one puff at a time.

...

Adrian Desmond went to the car accident scene, where the car that Paige Desmond was riding in was already totaled, and the driver died on the spot. The van driver was suspected of drunk driving and was awaiting processing.

It looked like an ordinary traffic accident, but Adrian Desmond’s intuition told him it wasn’t that simple.

Brandon Potter hurriedly walked up, saying to Adrian Desmond, "Sixth Master, we’ve discovered something shocking."

"What?"

"The accident involving Miss’s car wasn’t an accident."

Adrian Desmond suddenly turned around, staring at Brandon Potter, and said, "Make it clear."

"You had me investigate the culprit driver, and I found many murder videos at the driver’s house.

Most killed were the ex-Sultan’s concubines..." Brandon Potter paused, not continuing.

Orville Blackburn was extremely perverse, killing people and even *** and filming the whole process.

"The driver’s name is Orville Blackburn. Seeing him murder so many women, I found it suspicious and investigated further. It turned out that before Miss’s accident, he had contact with a woman named Charlene, who is a maid of the Queen Dowager."

Adrian Desmond interrupted Brandon Potter, asking, "Are you saying this accident was orchestrated by the Queen Dowager and Orville Blackburn?"

"Yes!" Brandon Potter affirmed confidently.

Adrian Desmond stood there, his face darkened. Brandon Potter wasn’t one to speak nonsense; he must have been one hundred percent sure to say something like this.

"Before I came, Orville Blackburn received a large sum of money. Though the remitter wasn’t Charlene, it was a name from Charlene’s niece."

"..."

"Sixth Master, do I need to investigate the Imperial Palace?"

"Yes, I want the irrefutable evidence that the Queen Dowager plotted against Paige," Adrian Desmond said.

"Yes, Sixth Master." Brandon Potter raised his eyes to take a look at Adrian Desmond, feeling sorry for Paige.

What had Paige done to offend the Queen Dowager enough to incite murderous intent?

Adrian Desmond stood at a crossroads, imagining the moment Paige encountered danger... He discarded the cigarette from his mouth, stepping on it to extinguish it.

Regardless of the woman’s status, as long as she dared touch his sister, Adrian Desmond would not let it go.

...

Kiya hadn’t closed his eyes all night, having simply washed his face in the bathroom, then put on the sterile clothes to go in and see Paige.

Paige remained in a coma, showed no signs of improvement, her eyes shut firmly, her breathing weak, with only the instruments emitting regular sounds, indicating her vital signs were normal.

The ICU remained suffocating with the air of death hanging, making Kiya gasp for breath as he gently held her hand, feeling a faint warmth.

"Paige, it’s wonderful; your hand finally has some warmth." Kiya felt slightly relieved, bending down, hovering above Paige, carefully avoiding the tubes inserted in her body.

The surroundings were particularly quiet, the lighting overhead soft and cold, as Kiya’s fingertips gently traced her face, where a light yellow stain mixed with faded red lay on the bandage, and where the forehead wasn’t as smooth as before, covered with medicinal liquid.

"You’re still beautiful...Even if you aren’t anymore, it doesn’t matter; I still love you."

Kiya gazed at her quietly, reluctant to look away; every second felt like the last, precious.

The visiting time was a mere five minutes, and the nurse came to urge him again.

Kiya felt this five minutes was particularly short, feeling like it passed in the blink of an eye.

"Paige, I’m leaving, please recover quickly. I’ll be outside watching over you, not wandering far."

Kiya looked at her for a few more seconds, kissed her cheek gently, and whispered, "Don’t be afraid, I’m always outside watching over you..."

Kiya walked out, stood by the window, where the sun rose high, its light fragmented by swaying leaves into dots of brightness.

He leaned against the window sill, squinting towards the lawn below, feeling a sense of surrealism.

Yesterday’s experience felt like a nightmare, leaving him unable to shake off the trauma.

The van crashed rampantly, the small car spun repeatedly, her screams, her blood-drenched body lying there, barely alive.

Kiya inhaled deeply, his heart racing with anxiety.

The nurse drove him to the smoking room, where he smoked a few cigarettes, then emerged, settling on the bench at the end of the corridor.

He sat there, mentally vacant, as bouts of drowsiness surged over him.

Disregarding appearances, he lay sideways directly on the bench, arms folded, head resting on the armrest.

In a daze, he couldn’t distinguish reality from fantasy.
