The Arsenal King of The Slave World
Chapter 42 — Embers and Evidence
The mountain basin lay quiet under the strengthening morning light. Only the restless stamping of horses and the soft crackle of a few dying fires broke the stillness. Thin trails of smoke still rose from the earlier cooking pits, drifting lazily between the tents and wooden structures.
Ren’s voice came through the radio, calm and practical.
“Spread out. Check every tent and every wooden house. Take anything useful — weapons, coin pouches, documents, maps. Leave the bodies where they are. I’ll handle the leader’s house myself.”
“Understood,” Lyra answered.
“Moving,” Silvia replied.
Ren pushed aside the heavy cloth door of the largest wooden structure and stepped inside. Compared to the rest of the camp, the room was relatively clean. Several swords and sets of armor hung on the wooden walls like trophies. A solid work table stood near the center, covered with scattered papers, leather pouches, and a few empty cups.
He moved straight to the table and began examining the documents with careful attention.
The first letter he opened carried the clear seal of Duke Hadrian Voss’s merchant company. The handwriting was precise and businesslike. The contents confirmed that the bandit leader had been provided with two years’ salary for his men — a total of **158,000 gold coins** — along with three months of prepared rations and an additional **100,000 gold coins** intended for the purchase of further supplies over the remaining twenty-one months. In return, the group was ordered to maintain continuous watch over this particular trade route, intercept rival merchants whenever possible, and capture potential slaves for transport to an assigned location that was deliberately left unnamed in the letter.
Ren’s expression remained controlled, but his eyes sharpened.
He opened several more letters. Most contained older operational orders: specific dates months in the past when the group had been instructed to attack certain villages or merchant caravans. One letter, however, made him pause longer than the others. It instructed the leader to remain alert for two specific individuals — a human man traveling with a silver-haired wolf beastwoman. If the pair was sighted anywhere within their area of operation, both were to be captured alive and transported to a designated location in the capital. The exact delivery point was once again omitted, but the physical descriptions left no room for doubt.
It was about him and Lyra.
Ren spoke quietly into the radio.
“Lyra. Silvia. I found letters from Duke Hadrian Voss’s merchant company. They were funding this entire camp. Two years of salary for the men, money set aside for rations, and standing orders to raid rivals and take slaves. There’s also a specific instruction to watch for a human man and a silver wolf girl matching our descriptions. They were ordered to capture us and send us to the capital if they found us.”
A short silence followed before Lyra’s voice returned, tighter than usual.
“…So the Duke and the Crown Prince really are hunting us directly.”
Silvia’s reply was more measured, though a note of surprise colored her tone.
“Duke Hadrian Voss is using organized bandit groups as an extension of his private forces. That level of long-term planning is more thorough than most nobles would attempt.”
Ren continued searching the table. Beneath a stack of older orders he found a carefully folded map. When he spread it open, the quality of the work became immediately clear. The chart was extremely detailed — the kind that commoners and ordinary criminals were strictly forbidden from owning. Only nobles and high-ranking military officers were permitted to possess maps of this precision. It showed major trade routes across the Kingdom of Valdoria, key cities, border crossings, and terrain features. At regular intervals along the most important roads, small circles had been marked a short distance away from settled areas and main paths. One of those circles sat exactly on their current location.
“These marks are other camps,” Ren said into the radio. “This isn’t an isolated group. The Duke has placed a network of bandit settlements along critical routes throughout Valdoria.”
He moved to the bed and began testing the floorboards. One section near the head of the bed felt slightly different under his boot. He pried it up and found several sturdy wooden chests hidden in the space beneath, along with heavy cloth bags of coins. Without ceremony he transferred the contents into the system inventory: the bandits’ two-year salary of **158,000 gold**, the ration funds of **100,000 gold**, the leader’s personal savings of **10,000 gold**, and the **50,000 gold** that had been looted from merchants and travelers over time.
Outside, Lyra and Silvia continued their methodical search of the tents and smaller wooden houses. Between the bedrolls, personal chests, and hidden corners they recovered the combined personal savings of the lower-ranking bandits, totaling **4,500 gold coins**, along with a variety of weapons and small valuables.
When the last of the useful items from the living areas had been collected, Ren checked the system. The calculation appeared clearly before his eyes:
**Previous gold reserve:** 12,600
**System kill rewards:** 210,000
**Bandits’ two-year salary:** 158,000
**Ration purchase funds:** 100,000
**Leader’s personal savings:** 10,000
**Looted from merchants and travelers:** 50,000
**Combined savings of lower bandits:** 4,500
**Current Total (before destruction reward):** 545,100 gold coins
They moved next to the warehouse-like structure at the rear of the camp. Inside they found the bulk of the supplies: roughly ten tons of grain — wheat, corn, and rice — stacked in heavy sacks, along with crates of wine and bottles of alcohol stored in a small cellar. Ren transferred the useful portions into storage. The horses still tied in the stable were cut free and driven out of the basin so they would not be caught in what came next.
When nothing of further value remained, Ren spoke again.
“We’re finished collecting. Burn it all.”
They poured alcohol liberally across the tents and wooden structures, then used a small quantity of fuel to ensure the flames would take hold properly. Fire spread quickly in the dry mountain air. Canvas blackened and collapsed inward. The wooden houses caught with a deep roar as the flames climbed their walls and ate through the roofs. The corpses of the bandits were consumed along with everything else, reduced to ash and bone fragments beneath the rising column of smoke.
Only after the settlement was fully ablaze did a new system notification appear in Ren’s vision.
**[Bandit Settlement Completely Destroyed]**
Reward: **200,000 Gold Coins**
The final total updated.
**Current Total Gold: 745,100 gold coins**
For a moment Ren simply looked at the number. The scale of what they had taken from a single hidden camp was difficult to ignore.
As they walked away from the burning basin, Silvia remained quiet. In her thoughts, two realizations unsettled her more than she expected. The first was the depth and patience of the Duke’s planning. The second was Ren himself. The power he commanded was unlike anything she had encountered in seventy years of life. He was also handsome in a quiet, steady way, and there was a clear sense of righteousness in how he made decisions and moved through the world. She found her gaze lingering on his back longer than necessary before she deliberately turned her eyes forward again.
They put a safe distance between themselves and the burning camp. Once they were clear of the immediate area, Ren summoned the Mahindra Armado. The black armored vehicle materialized on the rocky ground with the same quiet certainty as before. The three of them climbed inside. Ren started the engine, the familiar low growl filling the cabin, and turned the vehicle toward the next town along their route to the Beast Nation of Fenrisgard.
Behind them, the bandit settlement continued to burn, sending a thick plume of smoke into the clear morning sky.
Ahead of them the road stretched onward, carrying three people, a fortune in gold, and a growing collection of dangerous secrets toward whatever waited in the next settlement.
