The Archmetamagician: The Weave Collapses Again
Chapter 391
Multiclassing into Monk hadn't given Anser his greatest boost, but it was the one that felt the most unique.
His inner energy tempered his body and mind into a unified whole, giving him perfect control over his body and all his abilities. He felt a sense of ease unlike anything he'd ever experienced before.
Even most of the weakness caused by casting Wish had faded away.
He checked his Character Sheet. The weakened condition was still there, but it wasn't severe. He would recover completely within two days.
'Looks like a strong body and inner energy help alleviate the weakened condition.'
Even when different spellcasters made the exact same wish, the burden their bodies had to bear wasn't necessarily the same.
'No more multiclassing after this. Next time I level up, I'll raise my Dexterity and Constitution into the extraordinary range. Then my base ability scores should finally be up to standard.'
The higher an ability score climbed, the harder it became to improve. Ordinary Feats could barely raise ability scores at this point, so he would still have to rely on the power of a true dragon and Epic Boons.
If all else failed, he could always use Wish again.
He stretched, then lazily settled back into his recliner.
Turning his head, he saw that the sky outside had grown dark. Pinpricks of light dotted the center of the island and the coastline.
'It's rare to have this much free time,' he thought with a sigh.
He still had plenty of things to do, but none of them were matters of life and death. There was no need to push himself too hard.
It wasn't like he was the world's savior.
Toril had plenty of legendary figures and demigods. They might rarely show themselves, but if something truly happened, someone would naturally step up to deal with it.
Anser simply lay there and relaxed. He didn't copy any spell scrolls or study Spellwrought Tattoos. He just connected to the Spirit Net and messed around.
Enjoying life meant wasting some time doing absolutely nothing.
The Spirit Net's membership was still hovering just above two hundred thousand, with no further massive surge.
Yet in only a few hours, Sakkors had already launched the "Forum" and "Spell Services."
That level of efficiency was honestly a little frightening. In Anser's previous life, it might have taken several weeks just to get a public beta online.
The truly impressive one, however, was the d20. After systematic training, its data-processing capabilities had finally begun to shine, and both its responsiveness and processing efficiency were astonishing.
It could simultaneously process hundreds of thousands of requests every second without the slightest delay.
By comparison, Sakkors and the mythallar were already approaching full capacity. If they hadn't been constantly fed enormous quantities of Spirit Coins, allowing their performance to keep improving, they might already have been on the verge of collapse.
'Sehanine probably doesn't even believe I can expand the Spirit Net into the Outer Planes.'
It was simply common sense, because the gods knew perfectly well just how difficult the Weave was to deal with.
Anser browsed the news. Sure enough, there were far fewer comments now, and the information density had skyrocketed. At last, he no longer had to sift through all that garbage.
He entered the forum and found several thousand posts covering every imaginable topic.
Several of the hottest threads were discussing the origins of the Spirit Net, Spirit Coin trading, and Spell Services.
There were all kinds of theories about where the Spirit Net had come from, but with the Seldarine and the Platinum Dragon God backing it, conspiracy theories were rare. Most people openly expressed their approval and enthusiasm.
Even those harboring ulterior motives didn't dare show it too openly. If the gods happened to take notice of them, they would be in serious trouble.
The Spirit Coin trading section was much livelier.
Some people complained about being scammed—transferring Spirit Coins and never receiving the promised gold, or handing over gold only for the other party to stand them up.
Some were smarter. Rather than showing up themselves, they conducted their trades through third-party organizations such as adventurers' guilds. Once the money was in hand, they transferred the Spirit Coins online.
Others had already become middlemen, establishing dedicated Spirit Coin trading organizations specifically to buy and resell Spirit Coins.
'There's never any shortage of clever people, no matter where you go.' Anser couldn't help laughing as he read.
Still, this was only the beginning. Both the trading volume and overall scale remained tiny.
And what had really caused Spirit Coin trading to explode was the newly launched "Spell Services."
The "Telepathic Communication" and "Sending" services didn't consume much. "Spell Services" was the real money sink.
For now, Sakkors had made ten cantrips and ten 1st-level spells available, all of them commonly used utility spells.
Some used the efficient spell models Anser had provided, while others had been developed by Sakkors himself.
Netherese arcanists had primarily relied on spell slots for spellcasting, but they had also studied magic-power-based casting. At the very least, low-level spells posed no difficulty for someone who had once been a great arcanist.
The moment "Spell Services" launched, professionals, nobles, and the wealthy went crazy over it.
After all, spells had always been the exclusive domain of spellcasters, and spellcasters had always been relatively few in number.
Spell scrolls likewise circulated only among spellcasters, because non-spellcasters couldn't use them.
Even a Sorcerer couldn't understand a spell scroll unless they had multiclassed into Wizard.
Now, however, the Spirit Net gave ordinary people a chance to embrace magic. How could they not be tempted?
Plenty of wealthy people and nobles weren't professionals either. Naturally, they were willing to spend money on a few spells that might save their lives.
'Good thing we only made utility spells available. Otherwise...'
Anser inwardly clicked his tongue.
After browsing for a while, he realized that, following several days of uncertainty and suspicion, public opinion toward the Spirit Net had completely reversed.
The benefits brought by the Spirit Net were real and tangible. It had opened an entirely new world to ordinary people, fundamentally transforming their horizons and the way they thought.
If nothing else, even an idiot could reveal their membership status and immediately have people trying to recruit or buy them over.
Someone more cautious could simply keep their head down, steadily produce Spirit Coins, cash in on the early windfall, and escape poverty without much difficulty.
As a result, more and more people had begun actively supporting the Spirit Net, praising it, even worshipping it.
They had begun to fear losing the Spirit Net—fear that their lives would return to the way they had been before.
I could have endured the darkness, had I never seen the light!
'This... this is a revolution.'
Anser touched the Moonlight Holy Symbol at his chest, his heart pounding with unease.
'First, I'll integrate the temple into Holrewen and let things settle down for a while. Let things settle...'
He had no doubt that plenty of people were already looking for him, regardless of faction. The interests involved were simply too enormous.
He had originally planned to launch even more features—little games, photos, video recording, and the like—but now it seemed those would have to wait.
The Spirit Net that Anser himself found boring had already driven the locals wild.
'Once the Spirit Net reaches the Thayan border, I'll stop expanding it for a while and give Sakkors and the mythallar time to upgrade.'
Anser collected himself and disconnected from the Spirit Net.
Then he took out the spoils he'd seized from the lich and the vampire.
The best among them were two Very Rare magic items and one Legendary item.
The first Very Rare item was the Skull Helm. While wearing it, the user gained resistance to cold, poison, and necrotic damage.
The helm could also be used to cast Spirit of Death without requiring material components, but because of the disruption to the Weave, the spell's success rate wasn't particularly high.
The second was the Wand of Necrosis. A severed finger from a powerful lich grew from its gnarled wooden shaft, and whoever held it gained resistance to necrotic damage.
The wand had 7 charges and could cast Blight, Finger of Death, Inflict Wounds, and Ray of Enfeeblement. These spells were likewise unstable.
There was nothing that could be done about that. At present, only spells attached to Legendary items and Artifacts could function reliably.
After the Weave fell into disorder, the old magic-item system had collapsed. Many spellcasters had seen their fortunes plummet, and there was no easy way for them to replace what they'd lost with powerful magic items in the short term.
The final Legendary item had been found on the lich. It was called a Crystal Ball of Mind Reading.
It came with Scrying and could also cast Detect Thoughts remotely on the target being scried upon without requiring concentration, effectively functioning as a combination of the two spells.
Scrying allowed the caster to see and hear a creature on the same plane as though they were right there with them. It could even be cast with nothing more than a portrait of the target and an article of their clothing.
'Only does one thing, but it's incredibly useful.'
Anser decided to keep it for now. There was no telling when it might come in handy.
Come to think of it, he still had another Legendary item on hand: Soulrend, which he'd obtained from a Chosen of Mask.
'Sell it, or give it to one of my subordinates?'
He also hadn't gotten around to dealing with the Eye and Hand of Vecna, which belonged to Bral's royal family. Keeping them around for too long was a risk in itself.
