Chapter 185: Chapter 185: On the Road

Kyle Keith didn’t say anything more. His gaze drifted toward the inside of the house as the aroma of morning tea continuously wafted out.

Luna Dawson glanced up at him, the corner of her mouth twitching. She wondered what he was still hoping for. They had almost broken into a fight last night. Did he really think they could just sleep it off and immediately sit down for a meal together? Even though she still owed him a meal, she couldn’t let him ruin her celebratory breakfast right now.

"You want to freeload?" she asked.

"Will you let me?"

"No."

Kyle was left speechless.

Just thinking about last night’s situation made Luna feel that their current predicament was a bit awkward.

"How come Francis Grant gets to be inside?" Kyle pressed.

"I’m not letting him eat either."

Luna wondered if he liked Francis. Why did he have to compete with Francis over everything?

Kyle didn’t look embarrassed in the slightest. He replied somewhat helplessly, "Alright then. I hope we’ll still have the chance to sit down and share a meal together in the future."

Wow, she thought, he just couldn’t forget to remind her. Luna didn’t reply, opting to just give a nod. Seeing that she had no intention of entertaining him any further, Kyle pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and tactfully nodded his goodbye.

Luna sighed softly as she watched his retreating back. She pulled the door shut behind her and turned to walk back inside. The moment she turned into the dining room, she saw Francis already sitting properly at the dining table between Evan Olson and Wayne Dawson. He was chatting and laughing softly with the group. The bowls and chopsticks on the table were arranged neatly; clearly, they had been waiting for her to return before starting the meal.

Luna curled her lips. For the sake of those three Crystal Cores, throwing in an extra breakfast wasn’t a loss. With that thought settled, she pulled a carton of breakfast milk out of her space and walked straight over to Francis, setting it down in front of him.

"The soy milk was made strictly according to our family’s headcount. Colonel Grant, you’ll have to make do with this for now."

"Thank you, Captain Dawson."

Francis reached out and took the breakfast milk, a faint smile playing in his eyes. When his fingertips felt the slight coolness of the carton, the emotions in his heart were complex and indistinguishable. The events of last night still left him simmering with anger, yet seeing Luna actively offer him a drink stirred up a secret flutter of joy. Perhaps, after this incident, she was leaning more toward his side in her heart.

"Let’s eat," Luna announced. She sniffed the air; the breakfast aroma completely drew out her appetite. To wait for everyone to eat breakfast together, she had forcibly resisted the urge to slurp a bowl of river snail rice noodles while binge-watching her shows. She was absolutely starving by now.

Having observed them secretly for a while, Francis had long concluded that the Sunset Squad was no simple team. One only needed to look at the lavish breakfast on the table to know this. Supplies in the base were currently scarce, and very few could maintain such a high standard of food. This family was truly becoming more and more unpredictable to him.

Half an hour later, breakfast was over. Everyone divided the work to clean up the dining table. Luna escorted Francis to the door and waited there for the main group to pack up their things. After she rode Rollo around to collect various supplies, the entire convoy was ready to set off.

When the convoy assembled, there was a subtle yet conspicuous change. The Sunset Squad’s two off-road vehicles, which had originally sat in the middle of the convoy, now slowly drove to the front, following closely behind Francis’s car. Skylar Quinn’s hostile gaze frequently landed on Luna and Rhonda Dawson; she looked exactly like an angry little pufferfish.

Many people in the front and back who had witnessed last night’s conflict lowered their voices and whispered among themselves upon seeing this scene. The news spread through the convoy as if it had grown wings. In just a short while, the rumor that the Sunset Squad had fallen out with the Endless Squad had reached everyone on the escort mission.

The road remained riddled with potholes. The vehicles hadn’t driven far when everyone caught sight of a massive body covered in frost lying parallel to the road nearby. Its charred, hideous head was covered in countless scratch marks of varying depths, with stark white bone exposed in many places. At the junction between its neck and jaw, a lump of rotting flesh hung precariously onto the bone, looking as though it would fall off at any second. From the wound where the head had been severed, a large puddle of black blood had spread out, staining nearly twenty meters of the surrounding ground. It had long been frozen into pitch-black blood ice by the low temperatures, refracting a chilling, hair-raising gleam under the faint sunlight.

"Damn! Is this the Tier Four Zombie from last night?!"

"My God, does this even count as an Earth species anymore?"

"It’s terrifying... ordinary people won’t be able to survive at all in the future..."

"This huge monster was killed by the four members of the Sunset Squad working together?!"

"What?! Their combat power is way too terrifying!"

The appalling scene shocked everyone in the convoy beyond measure. Those sitting on the far side of the vehicles squeezed past one another to swap seats just to see this giant zombie with their own eyes. Everyone who got a clear look couldn’t help but gasp, their faces filled with astonishment.

After days of howling, freezing winds, many broken branches and withered leaves from the vegetation blasted apart by the advance troops had fallen onto the road. Previously, whenever they encountered such roadblocks, they had to send Space Superpower Users down from the vehicles—escorted by Superpower User guards—to slowly move the obstacles to the roadside before the convoy could proceed. But this time, not long after the convoy began moving, all the abandoned cars and broken branches within a fifty-meter radius ahead were instantly cleared. They were silently thrown into the grass thirty to forty meters away on both sides of the road, leaving absolutely no obstruction behind.

"Captain Dawson, you really didn’t need to keep such a low profile before." Francis looked at the completely unobstructed road ahead, his mouth twitching slightly. This clearing efficiency was much more convenient and faster than all the engineering vehicles and Space Superpower Users combined.

Luna watched the convoy ahead visibly speed up to thirty or forty yards. The corners of her lips curled up as she said lightly, "Didn’t I just lack the opportunity before?"

With Luna as a human obstacle clearer, their journey was completely unimpeded. Whenever they encountered zombies blocking the way again, the members of the Sunset Squad didn’t even need to step out of their vehicles; they directly activated their superpowers from the car to kill them. Little Sweet Potato and Purple Bean guarded the front and back vehicles, respectively. Purple vines continually shot out in all directions, recovering the Crystal Cores of the approaching zombies one by one. They were delightfully busy.

Because a lot of ammunition was used last night, the control over ammo had become much stricter. Unless absolutely necessary, firearms were not to be abused, as that would only make it easier to attract zombie hordes. They also needed to save some ammunition for emergencies on their return trip. They proceeded like this the entire way. Several times, when they were attacked by small hordes of a few hundred zombies, the Superpower Users and soldiers on the military trucks had barely jumped down to prepare for battle before the Sunset Squad, Little Sweet Potato, and Purple Bean had already skewered the zombies like candied haws and cleared the field.

For the entire morning drive, almost all the zombies encountered at the front of the convoy were completely handled by the Sunset Squad. The people on the official military trucks simply hadn’t needed to lift a finger.

"Are the people from the Sunset Squad perpetual motion machines or something?"

In the Fierce Tiger Squad following behind several military trucks, Sean Barnes stared in astonishment at the various superpower attacks continuously firing out from the moving vehicles ahead.

Yvonne Ford also turned her head to look out the window, her tone carrying a hint of nostalgia. "We’ve only been eating government meals for a few days. Have we already forgotten the days when everyone had to fight desperately for Crystal Cores just to level up?"

Hearing this, Sean let out a hearty laugh. "No... I listen to whatever you say. We’ll go wherever you want, and do whatever you want."
