Chapter 157: Chapter 157: Superpower Water

Mrs. Dawson had a massive headache and began to complain. "They’re both daughters of the Dawson family, but when Wendy gets drunk, she at least knows to go back to her room and sleep. Luna, on the other hand? She just rode Rollo in circles in the sky above the villa! Thank goodness she knew Captain Pierce, who was on patrol nearby, so he didn’t open fire. Otherwise, she nearly would have been shot down after being mistaken for a mutated animal!"

Kevin Keane was speechless.

"That sounds exactly like her," Lynn Shelby said.

Grandpa quickly tried to shift their attention. "Hahaha, well, no harm done, right? The way they were drinking, they’ll probably wake up with terrible hangovers tomorrow."

Lynn was already starving. "Let’s just eat. That bunch of drunks won’t be waking up anytime soon. Whatever it is, we can talk about it tomorrow."

The next day, as noon approached, a bright sun hung high in the sky, though it did little to fend off the howling, freezing wind. The sunlight made the snow-covered ground sparkle brightly.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK!

"Auntie, time to eat! If you don’t get up soon, the food will get cold!" Hector’s sweet, soft voice carried through the door.

Luna slipped out of her dimension in a flash. With the little ones in tow, she opened the door and scooped Hector up into her arms. "Our Hector is such a perfect little alarm clock. You’re even more punctual than Mr. Sun!"

Hector nuzzled into the crook of her neck and said affectionately, "The uncles are all waiting downstairs. You’re the only one sleeping in, Auntie. They’re going to laugh at you."

Luna chuckled and pinched his little cheek. "Alright, alright, Auntie was wrong for getting up late. I’ll go apologize right now!"

Down on the first floor, the group was seated neatly at the table. Luna took her seat with a smile. "I’m here, I’m here!"

Miles lay weakly against the table, his face scrunched up in misery. "Sis, I drank the water you gave me, but I still feel nauseous and want to throw up. My stomach is doing somersaults."

Evan Olson glanced at him, rubbing salt in the wound without hesitation. "You were the craziest one yesterday. You were chugging it down like it was plain water. It serves you right! Let’s see if you dare drink that much next time."

Aaron Palmer’s complexion wasn’t much better. He looked like death warmed over. "I quit, I quit. Whoever wants to drink this garbage can have it. I’m never showing off again. This is pure torture—worse than being chased by a zombie!"

Kevin was slightly annoyed that they had started drinking without waiting for him. "Serves you all right. You guys are lightweights anyway. By the time I got back, you were all out cold."

Luna couldn’t hold back her laughter as she took in their pathetic states. "Alright, alright. You guys went out to gather information yesterday. How did it go?"

They had gone out to ask around, which just so happened to make them miss the stepmother’s dramatic spectacle.

Taking a sip of the hot milk tea Mrs. Dawson had brewed, Kevin said, "The photo incident was the talk of the base for the first two days, but someone deliberately started suppressing the rumors yesterday afternoon."

Lynn raised an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in his eyes. He looked at Luna and asked teasingly, "You’re paying an awful lot of attention to this Susan Vaughn. Do you two seriously have some kind of deep-seated blood feud?"

Luna didn’t hesitate to answer. "I had a feud with her in my past life. I’m going to kill her."

Aaron looked around at the others and immediately declared his stance. "Deal! Luna, we’ll all back you up. We won’t drop the ball!"

Luna leaned back in her chair. Her voice was slow, yet it carried an undeniable certainty. "I suspect her water ability has mutated. Anyone who drinks the water she offers will have their minds affected by her."

"Mind control?!"

Evan suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. This superpower was simply too bizarre.

Luna looked at the group and explained, "Yeah. When they first drink it, they might just develop a favorable impression of her. But if they drink it long-term, there’s a high probability they’ll fall completely under her control."

"W-What a terrifying superpower..." Rhonda Dawson clenched her hands together, her voice trembling slightly.

Aaron’s expression grew solemn. "Are you saying Ron Rivers was controlled by her?" he asked in shock.

Quite a few people in the base had caught wind of the fact that Chief Rivers’s son had been kicked out of his home.

"It’s just my guess," Luna said. "Back when she tried to recruit you guys, Miles was on the verge of slapping her, but she still shamelessly kept trying to shove her water cup at him. That was when I started suspecting her."

Luna’s words made everyone at the table’s heart sink as alarm bells rang in their heads. No one had anticipated that such a bizarre and insidious superpower could exist in the apocalypse.

"Holy crap!" Miles suddenly exclaimed, his face turning pale. "Then what if she goes to work in the base’s main cafeterias and mixes her superpower water into the food? Wouldn’t everyone who eats there be doomed?!"

Resting her chin in her hand, Luna pondered for a few seconds before slowly shaking her head. "Her ability level is still low. The amount of this special mind-control water she can produce every day is definitely limited. Even if she did go to the cafeterias, that small amount of water would be diluted thousands of times over, rendering it essentially useless."

"That’s a relief, then." Evan breathed a sigh, though the killing intent in his eyes didn’t diminish in the slightest. "But this woman has a wicked heart. Keeping her around will always be a disaster waiting to happen. Her superpower is too dangerous."

Kevin looked at Luna. "No wonder she got into the Endless Squad. Susan Vaughn was half-dead when she went to the hospital the day before yesterday, yet she still managed to hook up with Kyle Keith, the son of Elder Kessler—one of the top brass at the base. Now she’s directly joined the Endless Squad, which Kyle oversees. That’s basically clinging to the Kessler family’s coattails."

Hearing this, Mrs. Dawson’s face instantly darkened, her expression turning incredibly grim. She discreetly squeezed Luna’s hand, suppressing the anger in her heart, and lifted her chin toward Kevin and Lynn. "Keep going. Give us the details."

Lynn took over, his tone resolute. "Isn’t it obvious? When she saw those photos scattered everywhere, she knew her chances of getting into the Ford family were shot. She probably sold Kyle on a pipe dream and hyped up her superpower water to the moon. That’s the only reason Kyle would specially assign people to watch over her and that Ken Vance."

Evan furrowed his brow. "Nine times out of ten, she revealed her trump card—the special superpower water—to Kyle. Kieran Keith has always been incredibly ambitious. He’s been busy trying to win over the other district chiefs lately. Now that the Kessler family has taken Susan in, they definitely want to use her so-called superpower water to reel in more supporters and expand their influence.

"The thing is, we only have suspicions right now. There’s no hard proof," Evan continued, his demeanor remaining steady but his tone turning a bit more cautious. "We still aren’t certain if her superpower water can truly influence people. If it actually can, it’s going to spell massive trouble for the base and for us."

Kevin leaned back in his chair, looking thoroughly unbothered. "Kieran Keith used to be the mayor, and now he has the chief of Sector Five in his pocket. Sector Five and all the base’s government officials are completely in his grasp. His hard power definitely shouldn’t be underestimated. But at the end of the day, as long as she steps outside the base, we can kill her whenever we want."

Listening to them, Luna sneered inwardly.

A piece of work like Susan Vaughn had relied on climbing the ranks by clinging to men in her past life, surrounded by a horde of sycophants. Now, in this life, even after changing bases, those skills hadn’t deteriorated one bit. She was still just as capable of seducing and stringing people along.

Reining in her thoughts, she swept a solemn gaze over Kevin and the other three men, her voice grave. "Even if she’s latched onto the Kessler family’s coattails now, my resolve to kill her hasn’t changed. I’m going to tear her apart with my own hands and throw her to the zombies to feed them. I’ll make sure she dies a miserable death!"

The men at the table exchanged glances. Everyone looked calm; no one panicked in the slightest.

A faint smile hid in the depths of Kevin’s eyes. "It’s just killing someone. To us, that’s nothing."

Aaron was the first to speak up, his tone resolute. "Luna, don’t worry. We’re all on your side."

Blake Blue gave a slight nod. His words were concise but carried weight. "We’re in this together. Whatever happens, we shoulder it together."

Lynn smiled at Luna. "These days have been boring as hell anyway. This is the perfect chance to find some entertainment."

Off to the side, Miles looked fraught with worry and couldn’t help chiming in. "Sis, I really didn’t expect Susan to swap men faster than she changes clothes. Now that she has the Kessler family backing her, what are we supposed to do?"

Luna had always been straightforward and never beat around the bush. After a brief moment of thought, she said, "It’s very simple! We’ll just wait for an opportunity and follow her out of the base. Once we’re outside, we won’t be bound by so many rules. We can just take her out in the wild and finish it once and for all. That way, we nip the problem in the bud."

Having said that, she quickly shifted gears. "It looks like I need to pay a visit to Francis Grant."
