The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 149: Fighting for Damage
Chapter 149: Chapter 149: Fighting for Damage
Jasper Payne’s squad was completely dumbfounded, their faces draining of color. None of them had expected to lose a person the very second the door was breached!
"Everyone out! It’s too cramped in here to use superpowers!" Kevin Keane yelled, making a split-second decision.
"Got it!"
The group responded in unison. Luna Dawson reacted the fastest, being the first to turn and dash out of the warehouse.
As soon as she was outside, she immediately asked Miles Dawson, "Where’s the little brat?"
Miles kept his eyes glued to the hole in the warehouse roof and pointed diagonally upward. "It grabbed her and ran up to the roof! It’s been running Brother Leo and me around in circles like dogs, swinging back and forth between these buildings. If I don’t burn it to ashes, it won’t do justice to the amount of cardio I’ve done today!"
The moment he finished speaking, he pushed his superpower to the max. WHOOSH! A densely woven net of fire spread out, tightly enveloping the infant zombie on the roof.
"AWOO!"
Another mournful shriek rang out. Aaron Palmer immediately stepped in to assist, layering his flames over the net. The fire net transformed into a blazing cage, trapping the infant zombie securely inside.
It thrashed and rolled madly within the fiery cage. A massive tangle of vines of varying thicknesses burst from its body, whipping around desperately. However, it couldn’t break through the wall of fire, wasting its energy trying to find its next target.
Amidst the chaotic flailing, one of the vines knocked something off the roof.
THUD!
With a muffled thud, a shriveled, ashen husk of a human fell into the snow. It was Shay Kramer, the one who had been snatched away earlier.
Her eyes were wide open, forever locked in her pre-death terror. Under the glare of the snow, the reflection in her lifeless eyes was genuinely chilling.
Yolanda Kramer and the others, having just run out of the warehouse, witnessed this gruesome scene. Their faces turned deathly pale in an instant, and they covered their mouths, gagging uncontrollably.
Jasper didn’t even have time to comfort his girlfriend. He scooped her up and swiftly retreated to Kevin’s side, staring vigilantly at their surroundings.
Kevin glanced up at the roof. Seeing that the infant zombie was running out of steam, he turned his attention elsewhere. Blake Blue had already used four metal spikes to pin the female zombie firmly to the wall, rendering it completely immobile.
Kevin was just about to summon his lightning blade to finish it off, but Evan Olson and Blake struck first. Dozens of Wind Blades and metal blades flew out simultaneously. The two attacks stacked together, instantly doubling their destructive power. SQUELCH! The female zombie on the wall was sliced into mahjong-sized chunks, black blood splattering all over the wall.
That was what happened when there were too many people—you had to fight for your chance to deal damage.
Seeing that the bigger threats were handled, Aaron summoned a fiery snake that pierced straight through the brain of the exhausted infant zombie. The entire logistics park suddenly went dead silent, leaving only the sound of everyone’s heavy breathing.
Jasper and his team had their entire worldview turned upside down. Just yesterday, they had been hunted relentlessly by these two zombies, barely managing to escape with their lives.
Yet today, Luna and her fellow Superpower Users were actively chasing and competing to kill the zombies. Anyone who was too slow wouldn’t even get a chance to land a finishing blow.
If their squad had been here alone just now, it would likely be their entire team lying dead in the snow.
They deeply felt just how overwhelmingly powerful this group was.
Luna tucked away the two Third-order Crystal Cores. She turned to Jasper and the others, who were still standing frozen in shock, and spoke in an even tone. "You look like you have something to say to me?"
Hearing this, Jasper and his teammates immediately looked incredibly awkward.
Having witnessed the terrifying strength of Luna’s squad firsthand, how could they dare harbor even the slightest complaint?
"No, not at all!" Eliza Hale was the first to snap back to reality. She hurriedly took a step forward and thanked them with sincere gratitude. "Thank you so much for stepping in and taking out those two Third-tier Zombies. If it weren’t for you, we probably would have ended up dead here today."
"Oh."
Luna gave a nonchalant response. She didn’t say anything else, simply turning around and waving to her team.
Immediately after, with a mere thought, the massive Marauder off-road vehicle materialized in the clearing. The squad members, demonstrating perfect chemistry, climbed into the vehicle one after another.
Only after Luna’s vehicle had driven off did Jasper and the others remaining in the logistics park slowly let out a breath of relief. However, the gruesome sight of scattered gore across the ground left them shaken for quite a while.
Once they collected themselves, they rushed over to close the smashed gates of the logistics park and secured them with heavy chains.
Following that, Jasper channeled his superpower and forcefully wrenched open the doors to the nearest two warehouses. But the moment the doors swung open, the group was dumbfounded. The warehouses were completely empty. There wasn’t a single shadow of supplies in sight.
Unwilling to give up, Jasper gritted his teeth. He didn’t rush to open the other warehouses, but instead crouched down to carefully inspect the locks on the remaining doors. His fingertips brushed over the cylinders and chains of each lock as he concentrated on sensing the surrounding energy fluctuations.
After a thorough inspection, his expression grew increasingly ugly. Apart from the few warehouses whose doors were already open, the locks on all the closed warehouses were completely intact. They genuinely looked as if no one had ever opened them. There wasn’t even the slightest trace of superpower usage!
Expending nearly half of his superpower reserves, he proceeded to open every single warehouse door in the park. The result left them utterly despairing—every single warehouse was empty!
They had risked their lives trying to scrounge for leftovers, carefully dodging zombies the whole way. After so much effort to finally reach this place, it all turned out to be a massive wild goose chase.
Meanwhile, Luna’s vehicle slowly drove out of the logistics park. "Not bad. We collected another huge wave of supplies. Let’s head to the next commercial district."
She was in a good mood. The annoying flies were gone, and she was richer by two Third-order Crystal Cores.
Nancy Sullivan looked at her with admiration. "Luna, your innate talent is just ridiculously strong."
Even though she had advanced to the Second Order, her spatial domain was only about forty square meters—roughly the size of a one-bedroom apartment. Watching Luna casually stroll around and retrieve items through thin air made her truly realize the world of difference between them.
Luna laughed it off. "It’s nothing, really. Just good luck, haha."
Bathed in the sunlight, the group chatted idly as the car bumped along.
They drove in fits and starts. Whenever they encountered a barricade, Luna instantly transformed into a roadblock-clearing machine, forcefully carving out two distinct paths for the Ninth District.
Everywhere they drove, swaths of zombies would collapse in their wake. The closer they got to the densely populated city streets, the more massive the hordes of zombies lunging at them became.
The undead were either tripped by branches, entangled in vines, or simply slipped and slid right past the group. Only a few agile Second-tier Zombies managed to struggle forward and attack them, but most were gunned down by bullets before they could even get close. At this point, the team was purely farming Crystal Cores, while casually tossing any supplies that caught Luna’s eye into her spatial domain.
Shane Shaw furrowed his brows. "Judging by this, the situation in the downtown area must be even worse!"
"That’s exactly why they chose to build the base on the outskirts of the city."
"Just the sheer number of zombies in these two Containment Zones is already so overwhelming. I can’t even imagine if humanity will ever be able to defeat the global horde."
Rhonda Dawson was also deeply worried. After all, less than ten percent of the global population remained.
"Just eat when you need to eat, drink when you need to drink, and make sure we keep getting stronger every day." Luna comforted Rhonda. She knew that overthinking wouldn’t solve anything; they just had to focus on doing what they could.
"Okay!"
As noon approached, the group, having spent the entire morning killing zombies, gradually made their way toward a less populated area to find a spot to rest.
