The Anomaly's Path
Chapter 305: The Domain of a God
The sky above the ridge had split open, leaking black fluid down the cracked cliff like an open wound. Between the tear in the sky and the blood-soaked cliff, two very different things stared at each other.
Above hung the Gate Boss, a huge, pale mass of grey-pink flesh weeping black fluid, its giant red eye twitching wildly while thousands of needle-like tendrils wriggled inside its gaping mouth. Below stood Zephyr von Celestial, his dark coat whipping in the wind, his huge black steel sword resting over one shoulder.
A few yards back in the broken ground, Morgana and Damon lay frozen. The weight of the monster’s presence wasn’t just crushing their bodies, it was invading their minds, thick and suffocating like hot tar poured straight into their thoughts.
Damon’s ribs ached under the weight of the aura. His jaw clamped shut so hard a drop of blood ran from his lip onto the ground. He fought desperately against the crushing force, trying to dull the shocks shaking his insides.
Beside him, Morgana’s fingers dug deep into the rock, her knuckles white through her raw, scraped skin. Her war affinity, which usually fed on the violence of battle, was being crushed under the overwhelming weight of the rift.
"Zephyr..." Morgana rasped, the sound barely leaving her throat as her purple eyes locked onto the back of the man who had pulled her out of the slaughter twelve years ago. "That thing... it isn’t... just mindless..."
Zephyr didn’t turn around. He stood with his feet apart, his body relaxed as he looked at the floating nightmare.
The giant red eye in the center of the creature’s face shifted. A deep, wet sound rumbled from its open maw, shaking the surrounding rocks. It wasn’t human speech, but a crude, unnatural alignment of sound meant to mimic the language of the living.
"Dead... thing..." the beast gurgled, its six long arms flexing as black sludge dripped from the hooks at its wrists, hissing against the ground. "Food..."
Zephyr let out a short, dry chuckle, adjusting the broadsword on his shoulder. "So this disgusting bastard can talk, huh?"
In an instant, the creature moved. It didn’t launch a simple attack, its sheer size defied its speed. Three of its massive bone arms lashed downward like black lightning, carrying hundreds of tons of force combined with a dense wave of dark purple Aether.
The attack swept across the ridge, threatening to erase not just Zephyr, but the entire cliff face including Morgana and Damon.
Zephyr shifted his stance by three inches. His right foot dragged through the dirt, planting deep into the ground as his grip tightened around his sword hilt. He drove his will straight down into the core of his blade, channeling his dense Aether until the steel shrieked, and swung in a raw, violent upward arc.
Boom!
A blinding wall of white-blue light sliced upward through the dark. It was a wedge of raw power fused with lightning. The shockwave tore the top five feet off the ridge, crushing rock into dust and throwing huge chunks out into the empty valley.
The three bone arms collided with the edge of the slash. The sound was like heavy metal snapping under pressure. Muscle tore, bone shattered into jagged grey pieces, and black liquid rained down across the cliff.
"GRAAAAAAAH!"
The beast screamed, a pitch so high it cracked the remaining archway behind Morgana and Damon. But before the severed limbs could hit the ground, the purple mist around the rift surged. The flesh at the creature’s shoulders didn’t just heal, it changed.
Within two seconds, four new, heavily armored bone arms burst from the raw meat, dripping with hot fluid. The outer surface of the new arms wasn’t soft flesh anymore, it had grown a thick, ribbed shell that hissed as it soaked up the leftover sparks in the air.
The creature didn’t pause. It attacked back immediately.
Two of the new armored limbs smashed into the ground thirty yards ahead of Zephyr, sending shockwaves of force through the rock beneath his boots. At the same time, its upper arms lashed out in a crossing pattern, trying to trap Zephyr in a cage of bone hooks.
Zephyr didn’t move back. He swung his sword around in a tight, spinning guard.
Clang!
Blue sparks exploded off the black steel as Zephyr deflected three strikes in a single breath.
The force pushed his boots deep into the ground, but his body stayed solid. He ducked under a sweeping hook that crushed the rock pillar to his left, thrust his palm forward, and blasted a point-blank ball of light into the creature’s joint.
Boom!
The monster’s joint blew open, spraying yellow fluid, yet even as the flesh tore, purple threads from the rift rushed into the wound, stitching the meat back together while growing even thicker armor over the fresh scar.
Damon’s eyes widened. "It’s regenerating and... changing itself... It took his lightning and grew armor against it..."
Zephyr deflected another heavy strike, his blade biting into the beast’s shell.
It’s not just regenerating , Zephyr thought. It’s feeding on the energy from the rift. Every time I hit it with lightning, it uses the leftover power to rebuild itself. The longer this goes, the more it learns.
Zephyr leaped backward, landing lightly beside the two wounded Transcendents as the monster’s claws smashed the spot he had been standing on a moment before.
He glanced down at Morgana, seeing the fierce, stubborn glare in her bloodshot eyes despite her broken body, her jaw clamped tight as her power fought against the crushing pressure. He looked at Damon, whose grey hair was soaked in blood, his hands shaking as he desperately tried to use his power to soften the shocks threatening to tear them apart.
Look at them, Zephyr thought, a faint smirk touching his lips. Fighting against something they can’t break. Stubborn, proud, hungry for the fight, just like I was forty years ago. Back when we thought pure instinct and raw will were enough to bend the world.
He was the first of his generation to push his way into the Sovereign rank.
Back then, no human had ever reached that level of power. There were no records, no rules, no monster to guide him. The idea of a Sovereign rank didn’t even exist; it was just a myth people whispered about, a dream of reaching the power of a god.
He had to carve the path himself, with his own blood and bone, pushing his body past its limits in the dark just to see what was out there.
And even after breaking through, he knew from the start that Sovereign wasn’t the end. Somewhere beyond it, another rank was waiting, a level higher than anything humans had ever imagined, just waiting for someone strong enough to tear the sky open and reach it.
He looked at Morgana, a survivor of a generation trapped in endless war, forced to bury her friends before she could even master her own strength. And then he thought of the next generation, led by reckless, fiery talents like Leo, young monsters rising up with raw potential, ready to push further than anyone before them.
Zephyr’s generation had no gods to look up to, no pillars to stand on. They had to build the ground beneath their own feet.
But these kids? They had a long, brutal road ahead of them, and Zephyr had no intention of letting their path get cut short here. If there were no legends left for them to lean on, then he would be the pillar they built off of.
The Gate Boss shrieked, its entire upper body swelling with dark purple energy.
The four parts of its central eye split open, charging a massive, wide beam of decay aimed straight at the cliff. At the same time, all four of its armored limbs dug into the ground, locking the stone around Zephyr to stop him from dodging.
It was a death trap. The air itself started to rot.
Zephyr didn’t move his feet. He lowered his sword until the tip hovered just above the ground.
"Listen up, kids," Zephyr’s voice boomed over the crackling lightning, his tone losing its usual playfulness. "People call me the Lightning Sovereign, or the hero of the Incursion, or whatever other useless titles they put in history books. But before all that... I was a swordsman."
Morgana’s violet eyes locked onto his broad back.
"Normal fighters think a domain is just a power you throw around to boost your attacks," Zephyr said, his voice dropping, carrying a weight that seemed to anchor the air itself. "They think a Sovereign’s world is just a bigger version of a Grandmaster’s bubble. That’s why most of them die the moment they touch Aether."
The Gate Boss gurgled, and thousands of needle-like limbs shot forward like a dark cloud of venomous spikes. At the same time, the remaining bone hooks lashed out from the sides, trying to trap Zephyr in a cage of rotting flesh and crushing force.
"A true domain isn’t a spell," Zephyr continued. "It’s an absolute command. It is the boundary where your will ends and the world’s rules begin."
The air around Zephyr didn’t just change temperature... it vanished.
The blue lightning dancing across his body suddenly died, replaced by a eerie, silent pressure. The wind stopped. The roaring sound of the Gate Boss’s beam, the screeching bone spears, everything was instantly swallowed by a terrifying, total silence.
Within a wide circle around Zephyr, the laws of the world collapsed under the weight of his presence. The incoming beam of decay hit an invisible line thirty feet in front of Zephyr and simply... froze. The black, rotting energy hung in the air, its forward movement completely stopped.
The six armored bone spears stuck in the air like pins pushed into thick wax, shaking uselessly as their force was stripped away and thrown into nothing.
The Gate Boss’s giant red eye twitched violently, its instincts screaming in panic. It tried to pull its limbs back, but it couldn’t.
The space around its lower body had turned into solid, heavy stone.
Morgana and Damon felt the crushing pressure on their chests lift, replaced by an even more terrifying feeling: the sense that they were no longer standing on the earth, but inside the domain of a god.
Zephyr slowly raised his right arm. He didn’t load his blade with lightning. He used his Will... the physical manifestation of an existence that refused to bend to anything in creation.
It’s time to end this, Zephyr thought. I can’t drag this out. The faster I shatter its core, the sooner this Gate collapses before more of these bastards crawl through.
Zephyr lowered his stance. His eyes burned with a cold, bright light that drowned out the dark purple sky. He looked up at the frozen horror hanging in the air.
"Soul Dominion..." Zephyr whispered.
