The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate

Chapter 670: Make It Work, Luna

  • Next Chapter

Aeron Lancaster had left the castle for eight hours and returned to find the building had caught fire in every direction simultaneously.

He was in the Alpha’s chambers, explaining to their Gamma and Beta how their future Luna accidentally put the Alpha in a coma.

Griffin Sharpe, Shadowclaw’s Beta, stood near the window with his arms crossed and the face of a man processing information that had arrived in a format his training had never covered. Knox Rainer, the Gamma, was leaning against the far wall, arms folded, watching everything and everyone with the quiet, cataloguing focus of a man whose job description included know things before they become problems and whose job was currently twelve hours behind schedule.

Elias, the Master Healer of Shadowclaw, was checking Fin’s vitals for what Serena guessed was the fourth time, because the first three had produced numbers he kept rechecking with the quiet dissatisfaction of a healer whose patient was stable and whose stability had zero medical explanation.

"Alright." The Beta unfolded his arms. "I’m going to be honest. That was absolutely, categorically, in every possible configuration of words in the common tongue, the last thing I was expecting to hear when I asked the Luna if she needed help this morning."

Knox’s mouth twitched. The twitch lived and died in under a second, the Gamma’s version of a standing ovation.

Griffin turned to Serena. "Luna. The Alpha is going to be unconscious for a week. That means decisions stack, correspondence goes unanswered, and the throne room turns into a waiting room full of people who think ’the Alpha is unavailable’ means ’try harder.’"

Griffin paused, assessing her the way a general assesses reinforcements: welcome, necessary, and unproven.

"I suggest his study first. He is organized with his paperwork. Then the throne room. The Beta and I will fill in any gaps you need."

Serena blinked.

The Beta had no idea. He was standing three feet from her, calling her Luna, giving her operational directives, treating her like the woman his Alpha had chosen, because as far as Griffin Sharpe knew, that was exactly what she was. His Alpha’s mate. His Luna. The woman whose opinion mattered and whose authority was real and whose place in this castle was permanent.

He had no idea that the man lying unconscious in that bed had told her to get the fuck out of his castle. He had no idea that "Luna" was a title Serena was wearing the way a soldier wears a uniform that belongs to a discharged unit. He had no idea that every time he said the word, it landed on a bruise that was still fresh and still bleeding.

Shadowclaw protocol said defer to the Luna in the Alpha’s absence and apparently, that applied even if she wasn’t crowned yet.

She looked down at Fin.

He was lying where she had left him. Shorts she had wrestled onto his unconscious body. Pillow she had adjusted for his neck. Blanket she had tucked to his shoulders. The golden mark pulsing steady on his throat, warm, committed, integrating into his body whether his waking mind agreed with the arrangement or otherwise.

She loved this man.

She loved him enough that the loving survived being told to leave. She loved him enough that the bruise of his words would heal and the love would still be there underneath it, the way foundations survive fires because foundations are deeper than the floors that burn above them.

He was unconscious. He was vulnerable. He was going to wake up in a week to a kingdom that had been running without him, and the running was going to be done well or done poorly, and the difference between those two outcomes was whether the woman he’d told to leave stayed anyway and handled it.

Serena swallowed the grief. Packed it into the same place she packed everything she couldn’t afford to feel right now: behind her sternum, below her composure, in the space where she stored things until she had the luxury of falling apart. The luxury was going to have to wait. The kingdom came first. It always came first, because that was the deal you made when you loved a king, even a king who didn’t want you.

"Yes, Beta. I will start that right away."

Her voice was steady. The steadiness was load-bearing. Griffin heard competence. Knox heard compliance. Aeron, who was watching her face with the quiet, measuring attention of a mage whose diagnostic skills extended beyond the magical, heard something else entirely.

He said nothing. Because Aeron Lancaster was many things, but a man who spoke before he understood the full picture was never one of them.

SHADOWCLAW — ALPHA’S STUDY

Finnick Shadowclaw’s study was a monument to organizational discipline.

Every document had a place. Every place had a purpose. Every purpose was labeled in handwriting so clean it could have been typeset, filed into a system that reflected the mind of a man who believed chaos was a choice and the choice was unacceptable.

Serena knew this study. She had been here dozens of times. She had helped him with correspondence, proofread trade agreements, organized briefing packets for council meetings. She knew where the active files lived and where the pending items waited and where the urgent stack accumulated when Fin was between sessions and the kingdom kept generating problems at a rate that outpaced his reading speed.

She had always maintained a respectful distance. Helped when asked. Offered when invited. Stepped back before the stepping became presumption, because Serena Frostborne had spent her life calibrating exactly how much space she was allowed to occupy and the calibration was a survival skill that doubled as a courtesy.

That distance was a luxury she could no longer afford.

She sat behind his desk. The chair was too big for her. The chair was built for a man whose frame was designed for war rooms and whose war room was this desk, and Serena’s frame in his chair looked like a girl sitting in the captain’s seat of a warship. She adjusted. Made it work. Because making things work with equipment that wasn’t built for her was another skill the world had given her plenty of practice with.
