Chapter 666: The Alpha Chose His Queen

"Why didn’t you tell me?" River asked, her voice barely a whisper. "Lucian. All this time. Why didn’t I know?"

Lucian swallowed. The swallow was visible. The motion of a man pushing past the last wall between himself and a truth that had been sitting on his chest since a ceremony that felt like a lifetime ago.

"Because you were his. You chose him. He chose you. And I was never, in any version of this, going to take you from him. He is my brother. I held his rings in my pocket at that ceremony. I stood beside him and smiled, and my wolf was screaming your name, and I smiled anyway, because what I felt did not give me the right to destroy what you built."

He paused.

"Because I love you both and sometimes that means letting go."

Fin’s chest cracked open.

The words. The exact architecture of Lucian’s sacrifice, spoken aloud for the first time, released from the corridors and columns and gates where they’d been stored, offered to the woman they’d been protecting with the full, devastating weight of a man whose love was measured in what he didn’t say rather than what he did.

Because I love you both and sometimes that means letting go.

That was Lucian Moon in one sentence. That was the soul Fin carried. That was the blueprint that had built a wolf king who held gates and held silence and held everything except the one thing he wanted, and the wanting was the thing that had finally, finally, broken the holding.

Lucian cleared his throat and gently took her hand. The contact sent the electricity through him again, the same voltage as the corridor, multiplied by the vulnerability of the moment and the fact that his hand was shaking and hers was warm and the matebond was delivering the touch at full bandwidth on top of the physical sensation and the combination was a frequency that made his voice unsteady for the first time in his life.

"But I am standing here now, watching that woman dismantle you one cruelty at a time, and Tristan’s hands are tied, and your father’s hands are tied, and you are shrinking, River. Every week I ride back here and there is less of you. And I am finished watching it happen."

The gold in his eyes was bright. Burning. Carrying the intensity of a wolf who had decided to stop holding and start reaching.

"River, I want to take you from here. Come north with me. I will crown you the day we arrive."

She stared at him. Her mouth opened. Nothing came out.

Through the matebond, her emotions were a storm with no eye. Shock and grief and hope and fear and the specific, tentative, terrified warmth of a woman being offered a door she didn’t know existed by a man she was only now realizing had been standing behind it.

"Before you answer, you should know three things." He held up one finger. "I am going to speak to Tristan tonight. I am going to tell him everything." Second finger. "I am going to speak to Atlas tomorrow. He already suspects. I am going to confirm it." Third finger. "I am doing both of those things whether you say yes or no, because the alternative is spending the rest of my life watching you sit three rows back while a woman who crashed your wedding sits in your chair, and my wolf will not survive that, and neither will I."

Her chin trembled.

Through the matebond, the tremble arrived as a sensation that lived in Lucian’s jaw and made his own chin threaten to do the same thing, because the matebond delivered her emotions at full fidelity and the fidelity included the physical responses her body produced, and watching her chin tremble from three feet away while feeling it tremble inside his own face was a particular kind of hell that the Moon Goddess had either designed on purpose or hadn’t considered, and either possibility was damning.

"Come with me," he said. "Or stay. But know that the silence ends tonight, and whatever comes after it, you will never sit three rows back again. In his kingdom. In mine. Anywhere."

River’s breath caught. Through the matebond, the catch was audible from the inside: a hitch in her diaphragm, a skip in her heartbeat, the particular cardiopulmonary response of a woman whose body was processing an offer that her mind hadn’t finished evaluating.

"Will the wolves want a Fae queen?"

The question was practical. Through the matebond, the question carried a weight that the words didn’t show. She was asking about belonging. About acceptance. About whether another kingdom would even consider her before she would allow herself to consider it.

Lucian’s mouth curved. The curve was slow, warm, carrying the specific confidence of a man who had built a kingdom from the ground up.

"I am the Alpha, River. They bow to who I say they bow to."

Through the matebond, her surprise converted into something warmer. Something tentative. Something that felt like the first green shoot pushing through soil that had been frozen for too long, fragile and fierce and refusing to stop growing despite every reason the frost had given it.

Fin stood at the edge of the terrace, watching a man whose silence had been his defining characteristic speak every truth he had been carrying, and the truths were landing on a woman whose eyes were wet and whose chin was trembling and whose matebond signal was shifting from endurance to something Lucian had never felt from her before.

Hope.

Fragile. New. Aimed at him.

Lucian felt it arrive in his chest and the feeling nearly broke him, because hope was the one emotion he had never received from River through the matebond, and the one emotion he had been waiting for, and the arrival of it was the most painful and the most beautiful thing the connection had ever delivered.
