Chapter 614: The Making Of An Alpha King

A voice filled the white.

It was female, ancient, and carrying a warmth that existed at frequencies below human hearing and above divine patience, the specific resonance of a being who had watched civilizations rise and fall and had opinions about most of them and shared very few.

"What occurred in Frostborne was a violation of the divine covenant between the gods and the mortal realm."

Garrett’s chin lifted. His jaw set. The posture of a soldier receiving a briefing from a superior officer, even when the superior officer was a deity and the briefing room was the afterlife.

"The gods have convened. In twelve thousand years, divine intervention has occurred only once before. The genocide of a protected kingdom, the deployment of the damned against innocents, the sealing of a city to ensure total annihilation. These acts exceed the boundaries of mortal conflict and enter the jurisdiction of divine law."

The voice paused. The pause carried the weight of a deliberation that had already concluded.

"I cannot undo what has occurred. The covenant does not permit the reversal of mortal events, even when those events violate every principle the covenant was built to protect. The dead remain dead. The fallen remain fallen. The kingdom remains ash."

Garrett’s eyes changed. Something in them that had been waiting for a miracle died quietly, and what replaced it was the same acceptance he’d carried into the avalanche: not peace, exactly, but the specific stillness of a man who had stopped expecting rescue and was prepared to stand wherever the universe placed him.

"I am permitted to revive one soul. You will be returned to the night of the genocide, to the kingdom as it falls. You will carry full memory of this conversation so that you may act upon it. You will never speak of it. The silence is absolute. It is woven into your blood by divine law, and cannot be broken by will, by torture, by magic, or by love. The words will die in your throat before they reach air."

Garrett’s face cracked. The first crack since the corridor. A single fissure in the composure of a sixteen-year-old soldier who had been holding everything together since the night the sky turned red, and the fissure produced one tear that ran from his right eye to his jaw and fell into the white below.

"You will arrive inside the eastern corridor of Frostborne as the city burns. You will see yourself. You will see yourself carrying two girls through the tunnel towards the mountain. You cannot intervene. You cannot reveal yourself. You cannot touch them or speak to them or alter their path in any way. Their escape must occur exactly as it occurred."

The white shifted. The light that had been neutral and vast narrowed into something more intimate, focused, directed at the teenager standing in the center of it with the care of a hand reaching toward a face.

"Once your past self has cleared the tunnel with the children, you will have a window measured in seconds. The eastern gate stands between the tunnel and the city. Behind that gate, the vampires will reach the corridor. Every wolf and mage sheltering between the gate and the tunnel exit will be taken by death. But if the vampires reach their bodies, their souls will be damned for eternity. If the gate is sealed before the vampires reach it, those souls are spared."

"I seal the gate. From the side with the vampires."

"Yes. The souls behind that gate are innocent, and the damnation awaiting them was never sanctioned by the divine. This is the correction I am permitted to make. One soul returned. One gate sealed. One act of mercy threaded through a night that deserves none."

The silence that followed was the silence of Garrett understanding the geography of what he was being asked to do. Seal the gate from the wrong side. Lock the door and stay in the room with the thing the door was meant to keep out. Save the souls behind him by ensuring what was in front of him couldn’t pass.

"Will my soul be damned forever?"

"That is beyond my sight to confirm or deny. The covenant permits your return. It does not guarantee your departure. What I can tell you is this: you have already accepted the outcome, and the acceptance was made before I spoke. The gods do not recruit the unwilling. They recognize the willing and give them the means to do what they were always going to do."

He had. Fin could see it. Garrett had walked into a kingdom that was being fed to vampires and he had assumed he was dying there and the assumption hadn’t slowed him down by a single step.

"Will the girls be safe?"

"Their fate is undecided."

Garrett’s jaw worked. The tendon jumped once. Twice.

"Then I will go."

The warmth in the light intensified. The voice spoke one final time, and the words carried something that Fin recognized because he had heard it once before, in an ancestor chamber, aimed at a woman whose blood was gold and whose soul was older than the kingdom it lived in.

"You did well, Garrett. You honored a promise you were never asked to make, to children who could never repay you for it. The gods witnessed your path through that kingdom. I witnessed it. You carried two lives out of damnation on the legs of a boy, and the boy never once considered setting them down. That is not courage. Courage is a word mortals use when they lack a better one. What you did was something older, and the old things do not require names to be remembered."

"I understand."

"Then go. Lock the gate. Save what can be saved. And carry the knowing with the same spine you carried those children."

The light consumed him.

The memory didn’t fade so much as relocate. Fin caught a flash, brief, fragmented, of Garrett standing in a burning corridor with the sounds of a dying kingdom at his back and the sounds of vampires at his front. He saw the boy watch himself, a younger Garrett, carrying Serena and running with Elara beside him, disappearing into the tunnel. He saw the boy wait until the tunnel was clear and his past self was gone and the two girls were safe on the other side of the mountain.
