The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate

Chapter 611: The Last Light Of Frostborne

  • Next Chapter

This man was Serena’s father.

The man who adopted her, raised her, named her heir, trained her, loved her with the deliberate, permanent love of a man who chose his daughter rather than produced her. The man whose decision to keep her had cost him a military alliance and, six years later, his kingdom.

He fought beside his wife. His blade moved with the precise, efficient violence of a warrior whose skill had been honed over decades and maintained through discipline. He killed four Dark Fae soldiers in the time it took Fin to count them.

Seraphine screamed something that Fin couldn’t translate but understood from the tone: I cannot hold this much longer.

Serena was there.

The girl was in a corridor adjacent to the courtyard. Still a child. Taller. Her green eyes were enormous, her face chalk-white, her small body pressed against an ice pillar, watching through a gap between the wall and a shattered door.

She was supposed to be running.

Fin could see the tunnel behind her. The escape route. An opening in the palace infrastructure that led beneath the mountain, carved centuries ago for exactly this contingency, the bolt-hole that every royal family built and prayed they’d never use.

"Serena, GO." Seraphine’s voice cracked across the courtyard. The gold shield flickered. Dimmed. Surged back. "The tunnel, Serena. Run. NOW."

The girl didn’t run.

She pressed herself tighter against the pillar and watched because watching was all she had and leaving meant leaving her mother and leaving her mother was a door she would never walk through.

Fin wanted to move. Every instinct he possessed was screaming at him to cross the courtyard and pick up that child and carry her through the tunnel himself. His legs moved. His boots hit crystalline stone that wasn’t real. His hands reached for a girl who existed in a memory.

He couldn’t touch her. He couldn’t change it. He was watching a city die the way you watch a ship go down from shore, close enough to see every face and far enough that the seeing was the punishment.

A Dark Fae commander crossed the courtyard.

He moved with the specific, unhurried gait of a man who had already calculated the outcome and was walking through the formality. His magic was black. Thick. Radiating from his body in visible waves that distorted the air around him like heat off asphalt.

Seraphine’s gold barrier hit him and shattered.

The gold splintered outward in a cascade of light and broken magic that rained down across the courtyard like glass. The breaking was total. The barrier that had held Frostborne’s sky clean of Red Death dissolved in a single contact, and the crimson clouds poured through the gap with the hungry, accelerating rush of a thing that had been waiting.

Haldor killed two more soldiers and positioned himself between his wife and the commander. The commander didn’t slow down.

The blade was dark magic forged into a shape.

Haldor met it with his own sword and the impact drove him backward three feet. His boots carved trenches in the crystalline courtyard, ice fracturing beneath the friction.

The Dark Fae commander’s blade found Seraphine’s throat. Gold blood followed.

Fin watched it happen.

The cut was precise. Efficient. The work of a man who had done this before and found no sport in it and no hesitation either. Blood sprayed across the crystalline courtyard in a pattern that caught the red light of the burning sky and turned it darker.

"MOTHER!"

Serena’s scream tore through the corridor. The girl was pressed against the pillar with both hands over her mouth and the scream had escaped through her fingers the way water escapes through cracks.

Seraphine turned, hand on her throat. Her eyes found her daughter. The look on her face cycled through three expressions in under a second: relief that Serena was still alive, fury that she hadn’t run, and the specific, devastating resolution of a mother who has realized she is going to die in front of her child and has approximately four seconds to decide what her daughter’s last memory of her will be.

She chose.

Gold magic flared from her hands one final time. The gold didn’t form a shield. It shot across the courtyard in a targeted beam that hit the corridor where Serena was hiding, wrapping around the girl’s body, and Serena was lifted off her feet and thrown backward into the tunnel with enough force to clear fifty feet of darkness before her body hit the ground.

The tunnel entrance sealed behind her. Gold magic hardened across the opening like a wall of amber, locking the child inside and the war outside.

Seraphine Frostborne fell still glowing gold.

The gold dimmed as she hit the ground. Flickered. Went dark. The last light in Frostborne dying with the woman who made it.

Haldor’s howl tore through the kingdom.

The sound was inhuman. It started in his chest, a raw, guttural roar that climbed through his throat and hit the crystalline walls with enough force to crack them. It was the sound of a man watching his wife die and understanding, in the same second, that the kingdom she was shielding was going to follow her.

He killed the commander. The killing was savage, graceless, the work of a man whose technique had been replaced by something older and uglier and infinitely more effective. The commander’s body hit the courtyard in pieces.

Six more soldiers took his place.

Fin stood in the ruins of a throne room he’d never visited and watched a kingdom fall in real time, and the watching was rewriting every assumption he’d ever held about the woman who slept in his bed.

She had never told him any of this. He knew about her mother but not like this.

He hadn’t asked. He should have held her face in his hands and said tell me everything, even the parts that break your voice, and he hadn’t because he was Finnick Shadowclaw and Finnick Shadowclaw waited for people to volunteer and people who had survived genocide didn’t volunteer.
