The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Chapter 86: Bloodbath in the Night

They came on a Thursday.

Not at the time the counter-profile had projected the Guild’s operational discipline extended to timeline variance, the deliberate unpredictability of professionals who understood that a predicted approach was a countered approach. They came fourteen hours earlier than the forty eight hour window’s midpoint, at two in the morning, in a configuration that was simultaneous across three vectors rather than the two that the operational model had been built around.

North. East. And south.

The south was the thing that hadn’t been modeled. The south was Castor Vale’s former pressure line the border that had been quiet since Vale’s formal withdrawal, that the joint operational structure had kept monitoring but had weighted lower than the northern and eastern approaches because the documented threat vectors ran through the logging road and the corridor. The south had been quiet for three weeks.

The Hollow had been building in the south for three weeks.

Axel felt the three vector contact before the radios came alive the pack sense spiking with the aggregate fear-alertness response of an entire community registering simultaneous threat from multiple directions, the specific quality of it hitting him like a pressure change in the chest. He was on his feet before the first radio burst.

Reyna was already at the east wing room’s door.

The bond told him she had felt it through the pack sense three seconds before the radios the single system architecture running faster than the communication infrastructure. He crossed the corridor in four steps and she came out and they were moving toward the war room before the second radio burst finished.

"Three vectors," she said.

"I know," he said.

The war room lit up with radio traffic as the senior warriors’ positions reported in. Petra’s voice from the northern perimeter multiple contacts, at least six, moving fast through the tree line with the specific speed that Guild operatives moved, human biological speed enhanced by seven centuries of training methodology. Soren from the eastern boundary Hollow operatives, minimum twelve, pushing through the corridor boundary’s northern junction with the coordinated aggression of a force that had been waiting for a specific signal to move. And Calla no, Calla was gone. Russ, from the southern monitoring position that the joint structure had maintained at lower priority, his voice carrying the particular quality of a man who had been watching a quiet line and had just watched it stop being quiet.

"Southern boundary, twelve to fifteen Hollow operatives," Russ said. His voice was even. "They’ve been in position for hours. They were already here before we were watching."

Axel stood in the war room with the radio and the map and the three-vector picture assembling in his mind with the rapid precision that the Warden Mark’s enhanced sensory capacity made possible more information, processed faster, the specific advantage of a development that had been building for twelve days expressing itself in the specific conditions it had been building for.

"Petra hold the northern line, defensive posture, don’t advance beyond the tree line boundary." He was already putting on the gear Petra had staged in the war room for exactly this. "Soren eastern boundary, contain the junction push, don’t allow corridor penetration. Russ south, hold position and do not engage until you have backup."

He looked at Reyna.

She was geared she had been geared in thirty seconds, the specific efficiency of someone who had learned that operational readiness was a constant rather than a situational response. The Blood Mark on her wrist was warm and visible in the war room’s emergency lighting.

"The Guild hits the north while the Hollow pushes east and south," she said. "The northern Guild contact pulls the Ashveil force toward the historical primary threat vector. The east and south push creates the secondary and tertiary pressure that the northern response leaves uncovered." She met his eyes. "They want the Alpha at the northern perimeter addressing the Guild while the Hollow takes the east and south."

"They want me away from the nine-meter radius," he said.

"Yes."

He looked at the map. He thought about the forty-eight hours of preparation and about the counter-profile’s gap, the Guild’s fundamental mischaracterization of the proximity protocol as constraint rather than deployment. He thought about the Hollow’s three vector strategy and what it required to function and what would happen when the thing it required didn’t materialize.

"We go east," he said. "The Hollow’s eastern push is the ritual vector the corridor boundary is where the artifact configuration connects to the boundary stones’ field. If they’re pushing through the northern junction, the ritual setup is at the corridor’s center. They need the junction breach to bring the artifacts through." He looked at Reyna. "The Warden field at the junction point shuts the eastern vector down. The Guild’s northern contact expects a response from the Alpha Soren’s team handles the junction with the field’s support from the eastern approach." He keyed the radio. "Sable take three wolves to the northern perimeter to supplement Petra’s position. The Guild operatives are human-baseline speed with enhanced training. Wolves have the strength advantage in close contact. Give Petra what she needs to hold."

Sable acknowledged.

"Russ.... two wolves from the interior reserve are moving to your position. Hold the line for seven minutes."

"Understood," Russ said.

He and Reyna went out of the packhouse at a pace that was faster than his pre-bond maximum the fourteen percent running as a baseline rather than a sprint, the specific advantage expressing itself as the easy ground covering speed of something that had recalibrated its ordinary to a higher register. Reyna moved beside him at the Blood Apex’s natural pace, which was faster than human and faster than standard wolf and which she had been restraining to match his pre bond speed for weeks without noting it.

She wasn’t restraining it now.

The eastern perimeter was six hundred meters from the packhouse. They covered it in under two minutes.

The corridor’s northern junction was illuminated by the time they arrived not light exactly, but the specific luminescence that ritual architecture produced when it was being activated in the boundary stones’ field. The Hollow’s twelve plus operatives had pushed through the junction with the Hollow’s fighters covering the ritual specialists who were carrying the reconfigured artifact set. They had gotten twenty meters inside the boundary before Soren’s team made contact.

The fight at the junction was the specific brutal close quarters violence of two trained forces in a space that didn’t allow for tactical maneuvering everyone fighting for position, the superior wolf strength offset by the Hollow’s operational coordination and the ritual specialists’ attempts to continue their setup despite the active engagement around them.

Axel expanded the Warden field the moment he reached the junction’s edge.

Nine meters of counter frequency projecting outward from his position.

The effect on the ritual activation was immediate. He felt it, the field meeting the ritual architecture’s active frequency and producing the incompatibility cascade that the hollow ground’s anchor stone had produced, that the industrial site’s portable activation had encountered, that the boundary stones’ own function was built around. The ritual specialists felt it too he saw three of them register the field’s interference simultaneously, the specific physical response of people whose operating system had just encountered something their system wasn’t built to process.

The activation sequence stalled.

Reyna moved through the engagement with the Blood Apex’s active field projection running the second stage Convergence capability, the pack-bond mechanics integrated into the Blood Apex architecture, projecting outward in the directed, targeted way that the founding document had described and that the watcher had never studied because it hadn’t existed when the study was conducted.

The Hollow’s operatives who encountered it encountered something their operational briefing had not described.

The next eighteen minutes were the hardest eighteen minutes Ashveil had seen since the hollow ground’s first engagement.

The Guild’s northern contact was real and professionally conducted. Sable and Petra’s combined team held the line with the specific grinding difficulty of people who were well matched against professional opposition. Three of Axel’s wolves took significant contact damage. One of Sable’s clan fighters went down hard in the fourth minute and didn’t come back up during the engagement.

At the eastern junction, the Hollow’s superior numbers pressed against Soren’s team and Axel’s field with the desperation of a force that had committed to this approach and was finding the conditions different from the briefed scenario. Four of Soren’s warriors were injured by the ninth minute. Two of the Hollow’s ritual specialists broke through the perimeter on the western edge of the junction in the thirteenth minute and got close enough to the artifact configuration to restart the activation attempt.

Reyna stopped them.

Not gently. The Blood Apex at full concentration with the active field projection running at close range in a confined space was not a gentle thing. The two ritual specialists went down in under four seconds and the activation attempt died with them, and the junction lit up briefly with the blue-white light that Axel had seen twice before and that the surviving Hollow operatives reacted to the way people reacted to something they had been told to expect and found significantly worse than the description.

The Hollow’s forces began to withdraw at the fifteenth minute.

The southern pressure collapsed simultaneously. Russ reported the withdrawal before Axel had processed what was happening at the junction, which told him the southern push had been designed to hold rather than penetrate, to force the reserve allocation that it had forced and prevent Axel from deploying the reserve to the east.

The Guild’s northern contact pulled back at the eighteenth minute.

Professional withdrawal controlled, deliberate, the specific retreat of people who had assessed the contact and determined the conditions were not the briefed conditions and were exercising the operational judgment to disengage rather than continue into an unmodeled situation.

Axel stood at the junction in the aftermath silence and breathed and did the inventory the silence required.

Sable’s clan fighter was alive down, injured significantly, but alive. Soren confirmed it through the radio at the nineteenth minute. Nine of Axel’s wolves had contact damage of varying severity. The infirmary was going to be full before dawn.

The Hollow’s ritual setup was destroyed the artifact configuration they had carried through the junction was in pieces, the activation attempt’s interruption having produced a structural collapse in the portable ritual architecture that was not recoverable. The watcher’s reconfiguration, whatever she had built, was on the ground in the northern junction in twelve pieces.

He looked at Reyna.

She was standing at the junction’s edge where the last contact had been, breathing evenly. The Blood Mark on her wrist was faintly luminescent in the post activation way it had after full deployment not the dramatic sustained glow of active use but the residual quality of something that had run at full capacity and was settling back to baseline. Her face was composed. Her eyes were on the destroyed artifact configuration.

She was not looking at him.

He moved to her. He stood beside her and looked at what she was looking at the pieces of the ritual setup, the specific remains of the Hollow’s third attempt.

"It’s done," he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

"Is it," she said. Her voice was even. Something underneath it was not.
