The Alpha's Forbidden Bite
Chapter 50: War Ignites,Love is Tested
It began before dawn.
The eastern alarm didn’t pulse this time, it screamed. Four continuous bursts, the signal that had never been used in Axel’s lifetime because the situation that required it had never existed in his lifetime. Full breach. Multiple hostiles. Corridor boundary compromised.
He was dressed and moving before the fourth burst finished.
The packhouse came alive around him with the particular organized violence of a community that had been trained for exactly this and had been dreading it for exactly this long. Warriors pulling on gear in corridors, patrol leaders issuing coordinates through radios, the kitchen extinguished and the lights cut to emergency levels. Three hundred wolves reconfiguring from a sleeping community into something that knew what to do with a threat.
Petra met him at the base of the stairs. "Forty-plus hostiles through the eastern corridor boundary. They’re not stopping at the tree line they’re moving through the forest toward the packhouse grounds." She handed him his radio. "Soren has the northern defensive line. Calla has the southern approach covered in case this is a split movement."
"It’s a split movement," he said. "They’ll push north and south simultaneously to divide the response. Hold the northern line but don’t overcommit the real push is coming east." He was already moving toward the door. "Where’s Reyna?"
"East wing last I...."
She was already in the corridor behind him. He turned and found her three steps back, dressed, her dark eyes fully alert with the particular quality of alertness that wasn’t adrenaline because she didn’t run on adrenaline. Something colder and steadier than that.
"I heard the alarm," she said.
"Stay close." He held her gaze for one second, one full, clear second that said everything the situation didn’t leave time to say in words. Then he turned and went out into the dark.
The eastern grounds were chaos organized at its edges. Warriors moving in formation through the tree line, the sounds of the first contact already audible not far, fifty meters into the forest, the specific sounds of wolves engaging with something that didn’t fight like wolves. Fast. Unnervingly fast.
He shifted at the tree line.
The wolf form hit him like cold water, the expansion of everything, scent and sound and the particular physical relief of a body finding the shape it had been built for. He ran into the forest and the pack ran with him and behind them Reyna moved through the dark in the way she moved through the dark, which was like something the dark had made rather than something moving through it.
The first wave was containable. Barely. The Hollow had sent trained fighters not their full numbers, he understood that immediately, this was a testing push designed to read the pack’s response time and defensive geometry. He fought with the cold, focused efficiency that his wolf had always had in controlled circumstances, and around him his pack did the same, and the first wave pulled back into the corridor after twelve minutes of contact that left four Ashveil warriors injured and an unknown number of Hollow fighters worse.
He shifted back at the tree line.
Reyna was beside him. She had moved through the engagement like a third thing not fighting with him, not fighting against him. Fighting adjacent to him, protecting angles he couldn’t cover in the form he was in, moving with the absolute precision of something very old that had done this before in a hundred different configurations.
He looked at her.
She had a cut across her forearm. Not deep. She was already ignoring it.
"That was the read," she said. Breathing controlled. "They know our response time now. The real movement comes next." She looked east. "Within the hour."
He looked at his pack scattered across the tree line, injured, exhausted from the intensity of twelve minutes of real contact. He looked at the forest that stood between them and whatever was building in the corridor. He thought about the basement records and the boundary stones and what Malka had translated in the lamplight.
He thought about the bond.
He looked at Reyna.
She looked back at him. And in her face he saw the same calculation he was running the awareness of what they had discussed in the east wing room, what they had held hands over in the dark, what they had both said they were not afraid of. She saw him seeing it.
"Not yet," she said quietly. "Not until we know the ritual is active. We complete the bond at the wrong moment and we’ve spent the only card we have."
He nodded.
But his hand found hers in the dark, briefly, at their sides where no one was looking.
She held on for three seconds.
Then they turned back to face the forest.
