The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Chapter 121: Resurrection Through Blood

The orienting became awareness on the fifth morning.

Not all at once. The bond didn’t produce awareness the way a light switch produced light, it produced it the way a fire produced heat, which was incrementally and from a specific point of origin that spread outward at a rate that was its own and could not be usefully hurried. He felt the awareness building in the signal from the third hour of the fifth morning, the presence quality that had been running for a day gaining the specific additional layer of a person who was no longer simply oriented toward the bond but was beginning to register what the bond was carrying from his direction.

He had been carrying a great deal.

He was aware of that. Four days of the anchor at twenty six meters and the hand on her face or her arm or holding her hand and the bond at the full depth he could bring to it and the interior content of four days of thinking about a world without her. The bond was a conduit that ran between two people and what ran through it was not only the information one person sent deliberately, it was the quality of their state, the emotional register, the specific weight of what they were carrying.

She was going to wake into four days of that.

He thought about trying to manage it. He thought about it for approximately ten seconds and then he stopped thinking about it because managing what ran through the bond for Reyna’s comfort was the specific kind of dishonesty he did not practice, and more practically because the bond at the Deepening’s deepest completion didn’t permit the kind of management that would have required. She would feel what he had been carrying because it was there to be felt and the bond was what it was.

He held her hand and he let it be what it was.

The awareness built.

At the fifth hour of the fifth morning he felt the awareness reach a threshold, the specific threshold where orientation and awareness became something that required a word other than those. He felt it in the bond with the certainty of someone who had been reading this specific signal for weeks at every level from the pre bond’s wrist warmth to the hollow ground’s incandescent spike to the minimum’s static floor.

The threshold crossed.

And then quietly, without drama, with the specific unhurried quality of something doing the most fundamental available work her hand moved in his.

Not much. Not the purposeful movement of someone who had decided to move their hand. The involuntary movement of a hand whose owner was approaching the surface of consciousness and whose body was beginning to reestablish the specific coordination between intention and motion that consciousness permitted and unconsciousness suspended.

Her fingers closed around his.

He stayed very still.

He held his breath for the specific moment that the body held breath when something it had been waiting for began to happen, and then he breathed again because breath was what the anchor required and the anchor was still what the situation required.

"Reyna," he said. Same register as before. Same low, reaching quality.

She didn’t respond in language.

The bond responded.

The presence quality shifted not dramatically, not with the warm full signal of the Deepening completed architecture running at its stable frequency. But shifted. From the oriented awareness of someone approaching the surface to something closer to the surface than approaching. The bond carrying a quality that was hers in the specific individual way that the bond had always carried what was hers not her state’s information, not the operational read, the simple fact of her.

Cael came to the doorway at the sixth hour. He had been in and out through the five days with the regularity of a person maintaining a monitoring function that was the most important thing they had access to. He looked at Axel’s face and he looked at the hand and he said nothing, but something in his expression shifted in the way that expressions shifted when the calculation they had been running for four days produced a new answer.

He left again.

He came back in three minutes with Lira, who stood in the corridor and looked at the chamber’s interior with the expression she had been wearing since the dissolution communication went out, past the restructured model, into the specific territory of someone who had been wrong for thirty seven years and was watching the thing they had been wrong about completing its work.

Axel did not look at either of them.

He was watching the bond.

At the seventh hour Reyna opened her eyes.

Not fully, the specific partial aperture of someone whose biological system was running at the floor of its recovery capacity and was managing the available functions in order of priority, and full consciousness required more than partial aperture but partial aperture was where the available capacity currently reached.

She looked at the chamber’s ceiling.

He watched her look at it with the particular quality of someone who is registering location where am I, what is this ceiling, what quality does this light have, what does the air in this room carry. The Blood Apex’s sensory architecture was running at reduced capacity but it was running, and he could feel it running through the bond as the faint specific signal of her particular sensory processing coming back online.

He waited.

She turned her head.

She looked at him.

The bond ran between them not the minimum, not the building recovery, something closer to the familiar than either of those. Something that recognized him. That was oriented toward him with the specific completeness of the Deepence completed architecture finding its reference point after five days without it.

"You’re here," she said. Her voice was the specific quality of a voice that had not been used in five days present but thinner than its ordinary register, the edges less defined than her usual precision.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at him for a long moment with the partial aperture.

He looked back at her with the full, unguarded attention he had been giving her for five days and was not going to stop giving her now.

"How long," she said.

"Five days," he said.

She processed that with the slow, careful quality of someone whose processing capacity was still finding its floor. "The Full Expression," she said.

"Deployed," he said. "Complete expression. The anchor held."

She looked at the ceiling again. "The regional structure."

"Stable," he said. "More than stable. The boundary stones are running at the Full Expression’s amplification level. The Council has formally acknowledged the deployment. The Ascendancy is dissolved." He paused. "Lira sent the dissolution herself."

A long silence.

"How long before I....." She stopped. She was asking the question that the bond’s read had already given him and that she was finding the resources to ask in language.

"You’re recovering," he said. "The Full Expression’s complete deployment stabilized the architecture. The recovery is slow. It will be slow for a while." He looked at her. "You were below the threshold."

"I know," she said.

"You went to the ridge knowing what the depletion risk was," he said.

The long beat of someone who has been asked something that requires honesty and is finding the honesty’s words. "Yes," she said.

He held her hand.

He held it without saying anything else because there was more to say and the saying of it required her at more than partial aperture and required him to have something other than the five days’ interior content determining what came out of his mouth. Both of those were future states. The current state was her hand in his and the bond above the minimum and the chamber’s ceiling and the fifth morning.

It was sufficient.

It was more than sufficient.

He stayed.
