The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

Chapter 117: He Finds Her Too Late

  • Next Chapter

He reached Caul’s holding at the two hour mark.

Vale’s guide a lean, older Halvern Pack wolf named Corran who had been running the northeastern territory’s access roads for twenty years and knew them the way Axel knew the forest behind the packhouse brought them through the former Maren territorial corridor at speed, the withdrawal of Maren’s operational commitment having opened the road network in a way that shaved forty minutes off the direct route through the northern territories.

They came to Caul’s holding’s outer perimeter at five forty-seven in the morning.

The perimeter was still defended. Caul’s fighters, ideologically committed, not reconsidering, maintaining their instruction with the specific, costly competence of people who believed in what they were fighting for had been told to hold the approach and they were holding it. Axel felt them before he saw them, the Warden field’s extended range giving him the positions of twenty three operatives distributed across the perimeter’s outer ring.

He looked at Cael.

Cael looked at the perimeter and then at the bond’s signal, which Axel had been reading continuously for the two hour drive with the focused attention of someone monitoring something whose rate of change was itself the critical variable.

"The signal’s quality," Cael said quietly.

"Changed four minutes ago," Axel said. "It was building all the way here. Four minutes ago it stopped building."

Cael was very still.

"Not reduced," Axel said. "Not the compression. It stopped building and....." He found the word. "Settled. At the level it had reached. Like something that has completed a phase and is holding at the completion point."

"The Full Expression’s activation is complete," Cael said.

"Without the Warden field’s proximity," Axel said.

"Yes." Cael looked at the holding’s outer structure. "The founding Alphas documented the activation without deployment state," he said. "The Full Expression active in the trigger condition but not yet deployed through the Warden field’s proximity." He paused. "It’s stable in that state for a limited window. The Blood Apex at Full Expression activation level without deployment is running at a concentration that exceeds what a single individual’s biological architecture is built to sustain indefinitely."

"How long is the window," Axel said.

Cael looked at him with the specific expression that Axel had learned to read as the answer to a question being worse than the question anticipated. "The founding Alphas’ documentation describes it as variable," Cael said. "Dependent on the Blood Apex’s condition at activation, the trigger condition’s intensity, the proximity amplification’s sustained level." He paused. "At the conditions Reyna has been in tonight...." Another pause. "Less than an hour."

Axel looked at the twenty-three perimeter positions.

He looked at the holding’s outer structure.

He pushed the Warden field to maximum.

Not the eighteen meters of the elder stones’ coordinated deployment. Not the twenty two meters of the corridor ambush’s counter. The full extension that the Deepening-completed architecture produced at maximum deliberate push, the founding Alphas’ documentation had described the Warden function at the Deepening’s deepest completion level as capable of an extension that the earlier documentation hadn’t covered, a range that Axel had not tested because the operational situations that had demanded maximum extension hadn’t demanded the absolute maximum.

Twenty-six meters.

The perimeter’s twenty three positions registered it simultaneously, the Warden field hitting the ritual coordination protocols that held Caul’s fighter formation together at the twenty six meter boundary, the same disruption that had hit every ritual adjacent tactical architecture since the hollow ground. Twenty one of the twenty three positions lost coordination function.

The remaining two were human-baseline method.

Vale’s guide Corran handled one.

Cael handled the other with the specific, unhesitating efficiency of a vampire who had been doing this for considerably longer than the Ascendancy had existed.

Axel went through the perimeter.

He crossed the outer grounds at full pace and he found the entry to the holding’s foundation level, the pre truce architecture’s location in every holding of this period was the lowest structural level, the founding documents had been consistent about this and he went down.

The proximity amplification chamber was at the foundation’s eastern end.

He felt it before he reached the corridor’s turn, the chamber’s six-hundred-year accumulated resonance running at the specific frequency that the holding’s proximity amplification produced, the clan bond pull’s characteristic signature amplified to the level that the trigger condition required. He felt it as the pack bond integration’s counter direction response, which was running in him at the Deepening completed level because the bond connected both sides of the Convergence’s architecture and what the Blood Apex was experiencing in that chamber was running through the bond to him as its integration level response.

He turned the corner.

He stopped.

The chamber’s door was open.

Lira was standing in the corridor outside it, which he registered in the second after the door, and then he registered what was in the chamber itself and the second after that became something he could not categorize efficiently because the categories he had were not built for what he was looking at.

Reyna was on the floor.

Not unconscious. Not in the way that the compression technique produced incapacity or the way the industrial site’s first capture had produced it. On the floor in the specific way that a person was on the floor when the biological architecture had reached a limit that it had not been designed to exceed and had tried to hold the excess through will and capability and had found that will and capability had a ceiling.

The Full Expression at activation level without deployment in a proximity amplification chamber at maximum sustained intensity for six hours.

He was at the door in three steps.

He was beside her in two more.

She was breathing. He established that first, the Alpha’s instinct and the bond’s information arriving simultaneously with the same answer she was breathing, the bond was running at the settled post activation quality he had been reading for the past hour, she was breathing.

Her face was the wrong color not the Blood Apex’s normal pallor, which was cold and clean and the specific luminous quality of something that ran on a different temperature than warmth based biology. This was different. This was the pallor of depletion at a level that went past what the Blood Apex had resources to compensate for.

He put his hand on her face.

She did not respond.

He held the contact and he felt through the bond what the contact added to the information he already had, the bond’s read at physical contact was clearer than the bond’s read at distance, and what it read was not fear or pain or the cold focusing quality of someone managing a difficult situation. It was the specific quality of a system that had used everything available to it and had arrived at the floor of its resources.

"She activated," he said. His voice was even. He made it even.

"Yes," Lira said from the corridor.

He looked up at her. "How long."

"Approximately forty minutes before you arrived," Lira said. She said it with the flat precision of a person reporting an operational fact. "The activation completed. The Full Expression is at its deployed ready state. Without the Warden field’s proximity to complete the deployment...." She paused. "The Blood Apex at deployed ready activation level has been sustaining the Full Expression’s architecture without deployment for forty minutes."

He looked at Reyna.

He looked at the bond’s read.

He understood what Cael had meant by less than an hour and he understood what forty minutes meant within that window and he pushed the Warden field to its maximum extension and he felt it meet the chamber’s proximity amplification and he felt what happened at the meeting point.

The Full Expression’s deployed-ready architecture and the Warden field’s maximum extension, the two sides of the Convergence’s deepest completion recognizing each other across the space between his position in the doorway and her position on the floor.

She was six feet away.

He crossed it.
