The Alpha's Forbidden Bite
Chapter 113: She Endure Captivity
She was taken at three in the morning during the all-vectors engagement.
Not from the east wing room where the Deepening’s completion had happened. Not from any of the monitored interior positions or the secured corridors or the established approach vectors that the twelve weeks of operational planning had built specific coverage for. Not from the places that the Ascendancy’s intelligence on the packhouse’s defensive architecture would have told Lira’s planning team to avoid.
From the northern ridge.
She had gone to the northern ridge.
This was the thing that Axel would return to in the hours after not once, not in the first processing of the night’s events, but repeatedly, across the following days and in the specific quiet hours before dawn when the operational demands reduced enough to permit it. He would return to it with the particular weight of understanding that preceded full accounting, the weight of knowing a thing completely before knowing what to do with the knowing.
She had gone to the northern ridge. Not because she was taken from another location and transported there. Because she had made the decision herself, during the all vectors engagement’s peak, when the elder stones’ full activation was running and the Warden field’s maximum extension was covering the territory’s boundary approach vectors and the pack was in active engagement on three fronts and the war room’s operational coordination required the full attention of every decision maker it contained.
He had not known she was gone for twenty-one minutes.
He had been in the war room for twenty one minutes running radio coordination between Petra’s western containment line and Soren’s eastern boundary position and Cael’s six fighters at the packhouse’s perimeter, and in those twenty one minutes the bond’s signal had been changing and the change had been gradual enough and his attention had been fragmented enough across the engagement’s simultaneous demands that he had been interpreting the change as operational stress on the bond’s signal rather than external compression.
Twenty one minutes. He applied the full standard to that number without mitigation, because the Alpha of Ashveil Pack did not apply mitigated standards to failures that produced the outcomes this one had produced, and the mitigation that was available, the all vectors engagement’s genuine demands, the fragmented attention’s genuine cause was real and was not the same as the failure being acceptable.
Petra had registered it first. Not the bond’s change, which she couldn’t read, the change in his face during a radio exchange about the western line’s northern junction. She had said what is wrong in the specific tone she used when she had identified that something was wrong before he had confirmed it, and the tone had cut through the operational focus in the way that Petra’s directness always cut through things, and he had checked the bond directly and known immediately what he was reading.
Twenty one minutes between the compression’s beginning and the moment Petra asked the question.
She had gone to the northern ridge because the Warden field at full extension covered the territory’s boundary approach vectors comprehensively in the horizontal plane and did not cover the ridge’s elevation. The ridge was within the territory’s boundaries not at the boundary, inside it, the high ground above the packhouse’s northern face that he had climbed on the night he took Reyna to see the territory from above, the night of the full moon and her blood on the rock face and the specific clean cold smell of the Blood Apex that had dismantled the walls in approximately three seconds.
The field’s extension at the ridge’s elevation attenuated with the elevation change in a way that the founding Alphas had documented in the technical sections of the archive, the field ran horizontally along the boundary stones’ installation plane with full intensity and diminished with vertical distance from that plane, which meant the ridge above the northern boundary was in a coverage shadow. Not unprotected, the boundary stones’ passive field ran throughout the territory. But the active Warden function’s extension, at the twenty-two-meter maximum the elder stones’ full activation produced, attenuated at the ridge’s elevation to something considerably less.
Malka’s translation had described this in the technical section that Axel had read and filed and had not flagged as an immediate operational vulnerability because the field’s horizontal coverage of the boundary approach vectors had been the planning priority.
Reyna had read the same translation.
She had read it and she had identified the ridge’s coverage shadow and she had identified that Lira, who had also read Malka’s translated sections through the access Malka had given her, would have identified the same coverage shadow as the position from which to execute a fast extraction during the full activation’s deployment.
She had gone to the ridge because she had assessed that the ridge was where Lira’s extraction element would be and that addressing it required being there before them.
She had gone without telling him.
He held that.
He held it the way he held everything that had mass enough to require both hands, without the management that would have reduced it and without the deflection that would have moved it to somewhere easier to carry. She had identified the vulnerability and she had assessed that addressing it required her presence at the position before Lira’s element arrived and she had made the decision that addressing it was more important than the conversation with him that would have prevented it.
Because the conversation with him would have prevented it.
She had known he would not let her go to the northern ridge alone during a multi front engagement at three in the morning. She had known with the accuracy of someone who had been reading him for twelve weeks at the level of detail that the bond’s completed architecture provided. She had known and she had made a different decision than the one she knew he would have made.
She was right about the vulnerability.
She was right about him.
He found her gear in the east wing room when he went there after the war room’s thirty seconds. The gear was arranged with the specific, considered deliberateness of someone who had made a decision and had left the evidence of the decision in a form that communicated the decision clearly rather than ambiguously not carelessly discarded, not hidden, but placed in the center of the east wing table in the specific arrangement of items that said this is what I left and I left it deliberately.
Her operational gear. Jacket, radio, the tactical items she had been wearing for every engagement since the hollow ground. She had put them on, in the east wing room, and then she had taken them off and left them because she had assessed that approaching the ridge’s position with gear reduced her speed by a margin that mattered in the window between the all-vectors engagement’s first contact and Lira’s extraction element reaching the ridge’s optimal position.
Alone. Without gear. On the northern ridge. At three in the morning during the worst engagement the territory had faced.
He stood over the arranged gear for the specific moment it deserved and then he went.
The northern ridge in eight minutes at the Deepening completed pace that was no longer a sprint in any category his body had previously used but was simply what moving fast felt like now. She was not there. The ridge position showed her presence in the scent trail and in the specific disturbance of the high grass at the ridge’s exposed face that said she had been there long enough to have taken a position and had been taken from it in a rapid engagement rather than a sustained one.
The scent trail of the extraction element was at least five, possibly six. Moving north. Professional containment of her movement visible in the trail’s pattern, she had not gone easily, the trail showed that clearly, but easily wasn’t the operational objective for a fast extraction and the element had been large enough that easily wasn’t required.
The trail went north over the ridge and down the far face and onto the human road network that served the territory’s northern approach.
The road absorbed the trail in the way paved surfaces absorbed everything that the supernatural community’s specific sensory capacity relied on. No scent trail from the road’s contact point. No physical evidence of which direction the transport had taken.
The bond had the direction.
Northeast and moving at vehicle speed, the specific quality that the bond’s directional sense communicated differently from foot movement, the Deepening completed architecture’s depth providing enough resolution to distinguish between the two.
He went back to the packhouse.
He walked down the ridge’s southern face at a pace that was not running and was not the managed deliberate walk he used for things that required composure. Something between the two. The thirty seconds he gave himself while crossing the training yard grounds were not management. They were the specific discipline of ensuring that what he brought into the war room was operational information in operational language rather than the content of those thirty seconds’ interior experience, which was significant and real and not what the room needed while an engagement was still running on three fronts.
"Reyna is taken," he said when he came through the war room door.
He said it once, clearly, with the same register he used for patrol schedules and threat assessments, and then he said what the room needed to do about it.
"Northeast, vehicle speed. Lira’s extraction element, she identified the field’s elevation gap at the northern ridge and addressed it without alerting the engagement’s coordination. The extraction took her before she could take the position." He held Petra’s gaze first, then moved around the room with his eyes, giving each person the specific portion of what he needed from them. "Eastern and northern boundary patrols reorient northeast. Daren channel monitoring at maximum sensitivity, any communication about a transport." He looked at Vale. "The northern road network any vehicle movement in the past thirty to forty minutes on the routes that serve the northeastern territories." He looked at Cael. "Maren and Vethros’s former operational zone lies between here and Caul’s territory. They’ve withdrawn from the Ascendancy. Their people may have passive observation on the northeastern route. Can you reach them."
"In ten minutes," Cael said. He was already moving toward the communication equipment.
The war room responded around him with the specific organized efficiency of a group that had been doing this together for long enough to have developed the competency that made response faster than the situation’s demands.
He moved with it and inside the movement the bond ran northeast at the compression technique’s familiar signature and he held the connection’s presence not the directional information, not the state read, the thing that was underneath both of those the specific, irreducible fact of the bond’s existence at its Deepening-completed level. The level that the compression technique could attenuate but could not fully suppress because the Deepening’s completion had changed the bond’s base architecture to something that ran at a depth the compression was calibrated against the pre-Deepening signal.
She was there.
The bond told him that at a level below the attenuated state read and below the compressed directional signal. At the base level. The oriented certainty of the Convergence’s deepest architecture running on the connection between them regardless of what was applied to it from outside.
She was there.
She was managing it.
He held both of those facts in both hands and he worked.
