Chapter 229: Chapter 109: Shocking! That Scumbag Lynch Has Committed Treason!?
’Who knows, at a critical moment, we might actually need her to summon a projection of an Angel to clear the field...’
Lynch had to admit that Priest was an extremely special class.
Ordinary Priests had terrible combat power.
But a Priest with powerful enough backing, one who could establish a connection with the Celestial Divine Kingdom, could easily kill enemies far above their level.
It was said that some High Tier bishops or Saints could even call upon the true form of an Angel to descend and fight.
But enough of that for now.
Lynch pushed aside his stray thoughts. While pretending to poke the bonfire, he whispered instructions to the others, "Your job right now is to protect yourselves and wait for my command. My senior brother, Raymond, is quite capable. He’s managed to hold out this long under an attack of this intensity."
After speaking, he nonchalantly put down the firewood, casually made some small talk with the "old comrades" around him, and then walked straight back to Angus’s Personal Guard.
He ate and chatted with Barton and the others, taking the opportunity to gather more intelligence about the besieging forces and the "Catastrophe Mage."
After about another hour, Angus returned to the camp, his expression grim.
He summoned his core officers, including the Personal Guards, to his main tent.
"The situation isn’t good." Angus got straight to the point, his voice thick with suppressed anger. "That Horn Solar is a real piece of work! He was polite on the surface, but in reality, he’s treating us like cannon fodder that delivered itself to his doorstep. He used the excuse that we’re ’fresh reinforcements’ with high morale and ordered us to assemble tomorrow morning and act as the first wave of the main assault on Red Ridge Castle."
The tent immediately erupted in an uproar.
"What? He wants us to lead the charge?!"
"My Lord, he’s obviously just trying to wear us down!"
"We just barely escaped with our lives! Men and horses are exhausted, and our equipment is incomplete... How are we supposed to fight?"
Barton was so angry he slammed his fist down. "My Lord, let’s just leave. If they don’t want us here, we’ll find somewhere that does!"
Angus raised a hand to quiet the furious crowd, shaking his head with a bitter smile. "Leave? Easier said than done. If we really leave now, we’ll definitely be branded as deserters, or even spies. That ’Catastrophe Mage’... he’s not someone to be trifled with."
He said in a low voice, "For now, our only option is to bite the bullet and go through with it. Everyone, get a good rest today. Eat and drink your fill, and carefully inspect and maintain your weapons and Armor. Prepare for the great battle tomorrow."
The men had varied expressions, but seeing that their commander had made up his mind, they could only accept their orders and go back to prepare. However, their morale inevitably sank a little lower.
「At night.」
Lynch furtively slipped out of his own tent and ducked into Angus’s for a private, one-on-one meeting.
Angus shared some intelligence with Lynch. "To placate me, that Catastrophe Mage revealed a bit of extra information. He said that during the attack tomorrow, he will personally set up an Array to communicate with Ragnarash, the Demon Refining Lord of the seventh layer of Hell. He plans to summon powerful combat units from Hell to aid the assault and shatter Red Ridge Castle’s defenses in one fell swoop."
"Summon units from Hell?" Lynch’s eyes lit up. "Did he say specifically what he’s summoning, how many, and when?"
"He didn’t go into detail, only that it would be ’a powerful aid capable of changing the course of the battle.’"
Angus didn’t quite understand Lynch’s excitement and just shook his head to indicate he didn’t know.
After a moment’s thought, he added, "But he seemed very confident, even a little eager to show off his power. Besides, Hell Creatures are often cruel, bloodthirsty, and highly destructive. Anything he’d value enough to use as a secret weapon won’t be simple."
"Is that so..." Lynch stroked his chin, thinking quickly.
This was an unexpected variable.
"The situation has changed. Our original plan..." Angus frowned and trailed off, asking for input.
Lynch mulled it over for a moment, an idea gradually forming in his mind. "The plan remains the same, but we can make some adjustments. Since he needs to set up an Array to summon units from Hell, he’ll have to concentrate, and it will consume a huge amount of energy. That might be the perfect time for us to make our move."
He told Angus his thoughts.
Angus’s eyes lit up, and he immediately began adding details, following this line of thought.
The two of them conferred in low voices for a while, finalizing a few more details and preparing several backup plans just in case. Only then did Lynch quietly leave the commander’s tent and return to the Personal Guard’s barracks.
That night, the Catastrophe Mage clearly had no intention of letting the defending army rest peacefully.
From the direction of Red Ridge Castle, the sounds of battle cried out from time to time, occasionally punctuated by the flash of magical explosions. It was obvious that the Blue Scarf forces were sending out troops in waves to conduct harassing attacks, a clear attempt at a war of attrition.
Lynch lay fully clothed on his sleeping mat, resting with his eyes closed. But his ears were pricked, carefully discerning the various sounds coming from the distance as he mentally ran through the various possibilities for the next day.
A long time passed before he finally drifted off into a deep sleep.
「The next day.」
"WOOOO—"
The low, deep sound of a horn shattered the morning tranquility.
Lynch immediately rolled out of bed and quickly got himself ready.
At that moment, Angus’s forces also received their orders and began to assemble.
Lynch fell in with the Personal Guard as they formed up, then followed the main army as it marched to the siege front.
Soon, he arrived at the designated position with his unit.
It was only then that he got his first clear view of the entire siege battlefield.
The battle had been raging for many days. The walls of Red Ridge Castle were already covered in scorched black marks and damage. Several crenellations had collapsed, and the figures of the defending soldiers could be seen bustling behind the walls, repairing fortifications and transporting Crossbow Arrows. The atmosphere was tense.
