Shen Yanzhi was irked by Jiang Li’s instinctive reaction. He let go of her hand, reached up to grip her chin, and forced her to look at him. "What, you still don’t believe me?"

Just as Jiang Li was about to say she didn’t, her phone rang loudly.

She gave an awkward laugh. "We can talk about that later. I have to take this call."

No matter how impatient Shen Yanzhi was, he could still afford her the time to take a call.

He immediately let go. Jiang Li pulled out her phone and glanced at the caller ID—it was Jiang Bowen.

"Hello, Dad."

Jiang Bowen’s voice was frantic. "Xiao Li, you need to get to the hospital right now."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Li nearly dropped her phone and stumbled. Shen Yanzhi, with his quick reflexes, reached out and grabbed her wrist, mouthing, "What’s wrong?"

Jiang Li shook her head, tears welling in her eyes. "Dad, send me your location, then text me the exact floor and room number."

"Okay."

After she hung up, Jiang Bowen sent a location pin, followed by the hospital department, floor, and room number.

Jiang Li could no longer hold back her tears as they streamed down her face, which terrified Shen Yanzhi. "What is it?" he asked, his voice trembling.

Jiang Li shook her head, biting her lip hard to force herself to calm down. "We need to get to the hospital right now."

’Based on the information Jiang Bowen sent, it must be Jing Shiyun with a broken bone, and a pretty serious one, too.’

’Both Jiang Bowen and Jing Shiyun were the type of people who only shared good news and hid the bad. They would never tell her about minor illnesses or misfortunes unless she discovered them on her own.’

’For them to be this frantic, she most likely needs surgery.’

Shen Yanzhi patted Jiang Li’s shoulder reassuringly. "Okay, let’s go now."

’He didn’t know what had happened, but since the call came from Jiang Bowen, there was definitely trouble at home.’

’Otherwise, Jiang Li wouldn’t be crying her eyes out like this.’

Worried that Jiang Li’s imagination would run wild, Shen Yanzhi sent a message to Wang He and then held her hand the entire time.

They took the elevator down together and arrived in the first-floor lobby.

Just as they got outside, two cars pulled up to the entrance.

Shen Yanzhi helped Jiang Li into the car, casually tossing the share transfer agreement aside. He wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "It’s going to be okay. Try not to panic."

Jiang Li was too panicked to speak. She rested her head on Shen Yanzhi’s shoulder, silently praying for Jing Shiyun to be all right.

The drive of just over twenty minutes felt like a century to Jiang Li.

The moment they arrived at the hospital, Jiang Li didn’t even wait for Wang He to open her door. She threw it open herself and took off at a run toward the lobby, causing Shen Yanzhi’s face to go white with fear.

’Has she forgotten she’s pregnant?’

He quickly jogged to catch up, grabbing her by the wrist. "Slow down, we’re already at the hospital." A few more minutes wouldn’t make a difference.

But that was a thought Shen Yanzhi didn’t dare say out loud.

Because many times, those few minutes are all that matter.

’He still didn’t know what had happened to Jiang Bowen and Jing Shiyun, but for them to call Jiang Li, it couldn’t be anything minor.’

Jiang Li wrenched her hand free and snapped at him, "You’re so annoying!"

’She was already a nervous wreck, and now Shen Yanzhi was doing this.’

’Of course he’s not worried. It’s not his parents in the hospital.’

But she instantly regretted shouting at Shen Yanzhi in front of so many people. She wanted to apologize, but couldn’t bring herself to do it. In the end, with her face flushed red, she just turned away and forged ahead in silence.

Shen Yanzhi was stunned for just a second. He knew she was just distraught and didn’t take her words to heart in the slightest.

’If his own parents had been injured, his reaction would probably have been even worse than hers.’

’I’m the one not being considerate enough.’

He caught up to her, acting as her knight.

When they got to the elevators, a large crowd was waiting. There were people in wheelchairs, people coughing nonstop, and even some lying on gurneys with IV drips.

Shen Yanzhi carefully formed a protective circle around Jiang Li with his arms, keeping others from getting too close, afraid she would get bumped or jostled.

The moment the elevator doors opened, people outside began to squeeze in before those inside had a chance to exit.

They managed to squeeze inside, but only because Shen Yanzhi was shielding her; otherwise, she probably would have been pushed right back out.

The elevator was large and packed with people, so the air was a jumble of smells.

There was perfume, body odor, medicinal ointments, and the faint tang of blood.

The combination of all the smells was dizzying.
