’Not bad. If nobody was trying to kill me, I’d actually enjoy living here.’ She thought inwardly.

She had only just finished admiring the scenery when Xiao Feng suddenly pointed toward a tree beside the path.

"Eggs!"

They all looked up. A little nest rested among the branches, holding three pale blue eggs that were only slightly bigger than ordinary chicken eggs.

Little Ancestor’s eyes lit up at once. "Spirit Sparrow eggs," he said with an excited grin. "They’re delicious."

Before he could climb the tree, Xue Yao reached over and lightly smacked the back of his head with the branch she had been carrying.

Little Ancestor immediately covered his head and looked at her with an aggrieved expression. "Why did you hit me?"

"Because those eggs belong to some parents," Xue Yao replied, pointing at the nest.

He looked up at it, then back at her. "...But the birds aren’t here, and don’t look at me as if you are any better than me."

She stared at him for a moment before letting out a helpless sigh. ’He’s a wolf. Trying to explain basic decency is probably a waste of time.’

"Fine," she said at last as she rolled up her sleeves. "We’ll take two."

Little Ancestor blinked in confusion. "Why not all three?"

"Because I’m already feeling guilty." She shrugged as though it were the most reasonable answer in the world. "If we leave one behind, I can still pretend I’m a decent person." She muttered under her breath.

’Xue Yao, no one understands your kind heart, I don’t hurt babies... I only hunt the adults.’ She thought inwardly.

Little Ancestor thought about it seriously before nodding. "...That makes sense." Though his expression showed otherwise.

Xue Yao smiled to herself. ’See? I’m still a person with principles.’

She tucked the branch under one arm before climbing the tree. Her movements were quick and precise, and it only took a few moments before she reached the nest. She carefully picked up two warm eggs.

"Catch." She said as she tossed them to the pups.

Little Ancestor pushed Mu Dai forward to catch the eggs.

Colour drained from Mu Dai’s face as he panicky caught the eggs.

"Whew." He sighed as he handed the eggs to Little Ancestor.

Little Ancestor patted his back. "Good." He said before collecting the eggs and putting them in his magical storage pouch.

Xue Yao left the last one where it was. After making sure the nest looked untouched, she climbed back down and dusted the bark from her hands.

Little Ancestor looked at the nest, "You really left one."

"I said I would." Xue Yao replied in a matter of fact tone.

The four little wolves exchanged glances before nodding together.

"We’ll leave one next time too."

"Good," Xue Yao replied with a satisfied smile. "That way we can keep telling ourselves we’re good people." She said almost with a smug on her lips.

The little wolves all nodded again, completely convinced by the good act of the human, who seemed nothing less than a taoist.

Xue Yao looked at their serious faces and almost laughed. ’These children are so easy to fool.’

The six of them continued deeper into the forest, following a narrow trail that curved between the trees. Along the way, A-Hui pointed out several wild fruits growing beneath a patch of vines.

"These are safe," he said confidently. "My grandmother taught me."

Xue Yao picked a few ripe ones and tossed them in her mouth without asking another question, walking with one arm behind the back of her head as if she owned the entire forest. "Then I guess we have to be thankful to your grandmother."

Not long afterward, two horned rabbits suddenly shot out from a clump of bushes.

"Rabbit!" Mu Dou shouted.

The little wolves immediately gave chase.

Xue Yao laughed and ran after them, completely enjoying the thrill of the little adventure.

One of the rabbits darted beneath a fallen log before changing direction so quickly that Mu Dou stumbled right past it. Xue Yao pushed off the log with one foot, jumped over it, and landed directly in front of the startled rabbit.

"...Got you." She said with a devious smile.

Before it could turn around, she swung the branch with all of her strength.

Thump.

The rabbit rolled before coming to a stop, its eyes dancing with stars.

Little Ancestor hurried over, picked it up by the ears, and looked at her with admiration. "You’re amazing."

Xue Yao pumped out her chest before tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I know."

Xue Yao, placing her hands lazily on her waist. "When you’ve been hungry often enough, catching food becomes a very useful skill."

Little Ancestor nodded thoughtfully as though he had just learned something important.

Their little expedition continued through the forest. They gathered more edible herbs, picked a handful of strange berries, and chased away two tiny thorn-backed lizards that had been trying to steal Mu Dou’s snacks.

Xue Yao was smiling as she walked when something white caught the corner of her eye.

She stopped in her tracks.

Half-hidden beneath a patch of ferns was something smooth and round.

Curious, she crouched down and gently brushed the leaves aside. Behold, a large white egg rested beneath them. It was much bigger than the Spirit Sparrow eggs, and its shell was perfectly smooth, without a single marking.

Little Ancestor walked over and frowned as he looked down at it. "...I’ve never seen an egg like that before."

Xue Yao swallowed as all the bells in her head rang simultaneously. ’This is like those little adventures when the main lead gets a egg, and the eggs happens to become a beast of powerful lineage... this feels so much like, doesn’t that mean I have main character anointing on me... hehehe, Xue Yao, I always knew you were meant for something great... Now what could the egg be, a dragon? A phoenix? Or a huge flood dragon?’
