Take Me Away, Dark Lord!
Chapter 76: Next Stop?
The Highway that led from the fertile, sunlit basins of Oakhaven toward the Western frontier was not a road meant for the faint of heart.
As the Black Bastion rode deeper into the continent, the landscape underwent a geological transformation.
The soft clay and sprawling oak forests receded, replaced by towering, jagged crags of dark granite and vast, sweeping plains of coarse, wind-whipped scrub grass.
The sky here seemed too large, an immense, vaulted dome of deep, cold indigo that pressed down on the mortal travelers with the crushing weight of insignificance.
The winds that howled down from the distant, snow-capped Western peaks carried no scent of flowers; they smelled of raw ozone, crushed stone, and the faint, coppery tang of distant, unceasing border warfare.
This was the approach to the Iron Marches.
Inside the carriage, Seraphina had successfully constructed an entire paper ecosystem out of the Duke’s administrative backlog.
She sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by thirty-two paper ducks, fourteen abstract paper frogs, and a colossal, highly menacing paper construct that she claimed was a legendary Kraken but looked entirely like a crumpled ball of pure rage.
"Papa Duke," Seraphina announced, leaning her chin on her small hands and staring up at his desk. "Where are we going? You said there were three places left before we have to go to the big, scary Capital."
Kaelus set his quill down.
He had been working for six uninterrupted hours, his mind functioning like a flawless, calculating machine.
He looked down at her, his violet eyes cool and instructional.
"We are conducting a tri-part territorial audit ordered directly by the Imperial Crown," Kaelus explained, his voice deep and resonant. "The Empire is vast, Seraphina. While the Emperor sits in his golden palace in the center of the pie, the outer crust is constantly crumbling beneath the pressure of monsters, corruption, and the greed of the regional lords."
He unrolled a smaller parchment and held it down so she could see the distinct territorial boundaries.
"We have three inspection sectors remaining," Kaelus said, pointing his black-gloved finger at a dark gray sector in the far West. "The first is our current destination: the Duchy of Voran, commonly known as the Iron Marches. It is ruled by Duke Reginald Voran. His territory sits directly over the deepest mythril and iron veins on the continent. The people there do not farm; they mine, forge, and bleed metal."
"Is he a bad man?" Seraphina asked, her eyes narrowing.
"He is an aggressive, loud-mouthed industrialist," Kaelus replied grimly. "He treats his populace like cogs in a massive forge. He hoards metal, artificially inflates weapon prices for the Imperial Army, and constantly petitions the Crown for military aid to clear the subterranean monster nests beneath his mines while refusing to deploy his own private forces. I am going there to audit his production ledgers. If I find he is withholding mythril meant for the Northern defense walls..."
Kaelus didn’t finish the threat, but his fingers twitched toward Requiem.
"And the next one?" Seraphina pointed at a vibrant, dark green sector to the South-West.
"The Verdant Reach," Kaelus said, his tone dropping into absolute disgust. "Governed by the ancient House of Sylvane. It is a massive, continent-spanning jungle that borders the tribal territories. The Sylvanes are masters of toxic botany, alchemy, and assassination. They present themselves as peaceful nature-worshippers, but their court is a literal den of vipers. They poison their tea, curse their jewelry, and constantly engage in covert border skirmishes with my Southern garrisons. We will spend minimal time there. The air itself is untrustworthy."
Seraphina sweated slightly.
’Note to self: Do not eat any berries in the Verdant Reach! Do not touch any shiny leaves! Do not breathe too deeply!’
"And the last one?" She pointed at a big, blood-red sector situated directly between the Verdant Reach and the Imperial Capital.
Kaelus’s violet eyes darkened, the radioactive light flaring with a sudden, intense killing intent that made the paper ducks on the floor physically tremble.
"The Archduchy of Valen," Kaelus rumbled, his voice dropping to a terrifying, guttural whisper. "Ruled by Archduke Leonidas Valen. He is the supreme commander of the Imperial Army’s Southern legions. He is an arrogant, warmongering zealot who believes that raw military might and absolute obedience to the Church are the only laws that matter. He despises my existence. He believes the Nacht Duchy is a collection of heretical barbarians who should be purged from the Empire so his legions can claim the North."
Kaelus leaned forward, his shoulders blocking out the carriage lamp.
"Leonidas is dangerous, Seraphina. He possesses a Grandmaster-tier Arcane Core attuned to destructive fire magic, and his legions are fanatically loyal. Our inspection of his fortress, the Obsidian Gate, will not be a diplomatic visit. It will be a mutual display of drawn steel. We are going there to remind him that if his legions march one inch past the cardinal leylines, the Northern Reaper will personally turn his grand fortress into a mass grave."
Seraphina swallowed hard.
The lore drop was too intense!
An abrasive industrialist.
A family of toxic botanical assassins.
A fanatical, warmongering fire-mage Archduke.
The road to the Capital wasn’t just a physical journey; it was a gauntlet of a high-fantasy political horror.
She was a tiny, six-year-old orphan with an unregistered Dark Core, riding directly into the maws of three separate regional superpowers who would gladly use her as a hostage, a bargaining chip, or a target practice dummy to get to Kaelus.
"How long until we get to Iron Man’s house?" Seraphina asked, her small voice wavering slightly.
"The Iron Marches are remote," Kaelus stated smoothly, sitting back and rolling up the map. "Under standard Bastion deployment protocols, riding at a forced military gallop, we would cross the crags and arrive at his capital, Iron-forge, in approximately five days."
He paused, his violet eyes shifting down to look at her soft, round cheeks and her delicate, silver-threaded gown.
"However," Kaelus continued, his voice devoid of its usual harsh authority, sounding instructional and clinical.
