Take Me Away, Dark Lord!

Chapter 49: You’re Awake

"His Highness the Duke didn’t leave that chair. He didn’t eat or sleep properly. He just... held your hand and poured his magic into you, keeping the fever at bay. And we... the Vanguard... we could do nothing but stand outside this door and listen to him slowly lose his mind."

Seraphina stared at the knight, her adult brain rapidly calculating the catastrophic nightmare she had just caused.

Three days...

The Reaper of the North, the man holding the fragile political stability of an entire Empire together, had completely abandoned his duties, his health, and his sanity to sit in a chair for seventy-two hours because a six-year-old orphan had a magical panic attack.

The Vanguard had been stalled.

The journey to the Capital was delayed.

The Marquess’s estate had likely been turned into a hostile, terrifying hostage situation by a sleep-deprived, murderous Archduke.

A suffocating wave of guilt crashed over Seraphina.

She was supposed to be useful.

She was supposed to be a low-maintenance, practical pawn.

She was supposed to fold origami ducks and warn them about ghosts, not become a catastrophic liability that paralyzed the deadliest military force on the continent.

"I... I ruined the schedule," Seraphina whispered, her eyes widening as the guilt settled into her stomach like a lead weight. "The Emperor’s meeting... the travel plans... I delayed everything."

She looked at Gallahan, her lower lip trembling, the cynical artist completely buried beneath the genuine, crushing guilt of a child who felt she had become a burden.

"I’m sorry," she said, her voice small and wavering. "I didn’t mean to fall asleep for so long. I didn’t want to make everyone wait. I’m sorry I made Papa Duke tired. I’m a bad bait."

Gallahan’s eyes widened in absolute, unadulterated horror.

The knight, who had faced down charging minotaurs without flinching, looked as though someone had just plunged a dagger directly into his heart and twisted the hilt.

"No!" Gallahan scrambled forward, dropping his hands onto her small shoulders, his voice a frantic, desperate whisper. "No, no, no! My Lady, please! Do not apologize! By the Light, never apologize for being ill! The schedule means nothing! The Emperor means nothing! You are not a burden! You are—"

BANG.

The heavy oak door to the bedroom was not simply opened; it was explosively ripped inward, the hinges shrieking in agony as the wood slammed against the interior wall.

Gallahan instantly drew his sword, spinning around to face the threat, his knightly instincts overriding his panic.

But there was no assassin.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the dim light of the bedroom, was Duke Kaelus von Nacht.

The floral quilt Seraphina had carefully draped over him was lying in a crumpled heap on the floor.

His violet eyes, usually cold and calculating, were currently wide, wild, and glowing with an unstable, terrifying surge of raw mana.

He looked like a predator that had awoken to find its cub stolen from the den.

His chest was heaving.

He looked down the hallway, his gaze snapping to Gallahan, his hand already reaching for the hilt of Requiem.

And then, his eyes shifted downward.

He saw Seraphina.

The terrifying, murderous aura that had been threatening to tear the hallway apart vanished so instantly that it created a vacuum in the air.

Kaelus did not walk. He moved with a speed that defied human physics.

One second, he was in the doorway, and the next, he was on his knees on the hallway floor, closing the distance in a blur of midnight blue.

He didn’t speak.

He didn’t ask questions.

He reached out, wrapped his powerful arms around Seraphina’s tiny frame, and pulled her flush against his broad chest.

The hug was not a polite, aristocratic embrace.

It was desperate and crushing.

It was the physical manifestation of a man trying to shield a fragile flame from a hurricane using his own body.

He buried his face in her messy, static-filled hair, his large hand coming up to cradle the back of her head, pressing her ear against the hard, cold iron of his breastplate.

Beneath the armor, Seraphina could hear his heart.

It was hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm, beating with the speed of a terrified bird.

Seraphina gasped softly at the impact, her small hands coming up to rest against his shoulders.

He completely enveloped her.

She smelled the familiar, comforting scent of ozone, cold iron, and pine needles.

"Papa?" she squeaked, her voice muffled by his coat.

"You are awake," Kaelus breathed.

The words were a rough, broken rasp against her ear.

It wasn’t a question; it was a prayer that had finally been answered.

He pulled back just slightly, just enough to look at her face.

His hands remained firmly planted on her shoulders, holding her as if gravity might suddenly fail and she would float away.

His violet eyes swept over her face, scanning her with the intensity of a healer.

He looked at her pupils.

He checked the color of her cheeks.

He ran a thumb over her forehead, checking for the fever that had haunted him for three days.

"Are you in pain?" Kaelus demanded, his voice entirely stripped of the Archduke’s haughty, untouchable persona. He sounded like a vulnerable father terrified of hearing the wrong answer. "Does it burn? Does the crawling feeling remain? Tell me where it hurts, Seraphina. I will freeze it. I will cut it out. Just tell me."

Seraphina stared at him.

She looked at the dark bags under his eyes, the unmasked panic etched into the sharp lines of his face.

He wasn’t mad that she had delayed the trip.

He wasn’t frustrated that his pawn was defective.

But he was terrified that she was still hurting.

The cynical walls inside Seraphina’s adult soul, the walls she had built to protect herself from the coldness of her past life, the walls that told her she was only valued for what she could provide, shattered into a million irrecoverable pieces.
