Take Me Away, Dark Lord!
Chapter 165: Sugar and Rebellion
Veering off the main path and marching toward a wooden table laden with hundreds of freshly baked, golden-brown cream puffs dusted with powdered sugar.
"Lady Seraphina! Where are you going? That is the culinary sector! We are not permitted to loiter there!" Cassian panicked, jogging after her, his silver boots clicking frantically against the stone.
Seraphina ignored him. She marched right up to the table.
A friendly baker’s apprentice saw her, smiled broadly, and immediately offered her a small, wooden platter holding three massive cream puffs.
"For the little Sovereign!" the apprentice beamed.
"Thank you!" Seraphina chirped, taking the platter.
She turned around to face Cassian. The young Paladin was standing three feet away, staring at the platter of pastries with an expression of deeply conflicted horror.
"You cannot consume those," Cassian declared, crossing his arms over his chest, adopting a fiercely strict posture. His icy-blue eyes darted from her face to the cream puffs, then back to her face. "You have already consumed a massive quantity of sugar today. Gluttony is the seventh tenet of forbidden indulgences. The body is a temple, not a storehouse for cloying, excessive sweetness!"
"It’s just a cream puff, Cassian," Seraphina sighed, her adult soul rolling its eyes. "It’s not a sin. It’s just a mix of butter and flour."
"It is a distraction from spiritual clarity!" Cassian argued, his voice rising, projecting his pre-pubescent holy authority. "To consume such rich, decadent foods breeds weakness! A true warrior of the Light subsists on simple grains and water! We must deny the flesh to elevate the soul! I, for instance, have not consumed a confection of any kind since I took my preliminary vows three years ago!"
Seraphina paused.
She looked at the incredibly beautiful, incredibly stiff, incredibly arrogant boy. Hadn’t he had a single sweet treat in three years? Since he was nine?
"I made you eat pastries the other day, though?" Seraphina tilted her head in an innocent expression, causing the boy to flush in embarrassment.
"That’s...! I didn’t want to eat! You were the one who forced me to! I already asked for sincere repentance! I won’t let you trick me twice, either!"
Aside from her teasing, an overwhelming wave of pure, empathetic pity crashed over her.
’He is only twelve,’ Seraphina’s internal monologue wept. ’He is a literal child. And the Church has brainwashed him into eating nothing but stale bread and water while wearing a swishy cape. He doesn’t need a lecture. He needs an intervention.’
Seraphina’s eyes narrowed into slits of absolute, tactical determination.
The bratty, teasing Sovereign vanished.
"Cassian," Seraphina said, her voice dropping into a low, serious tone.
"Yes?" Cassian replied, lifting his chin, expecting her to yield to his holy logic.
Seraphina didn’t argue. She didn’t debate theology.
She simply picked up the largest, fluffiest, most cream-stuffed puff on the platter. She took a step forward, closing the distance between them.
Cassian, operating on the assumption that a six-year-old girl like her was no physical threat, did not raise his guard. He opened his mouth to deliver another lecture on the fourteenth tenet of modesty.
"The teachings of the Sun God explicitly state that—"
Seraphina moved with the terrifying, lightning-fast speed of a trainee soldier.
She didn’t punch him.
She lunged forward, her arm shooting upward like a coiled spring.
SQUISH!
With devastating precision, Seraphina shoved the massive cream puff directly into Cassian’s open mouth.
The sound of the young Paladin’s lecture was instantly cut off, replaced by a muffled, panicked MMPH.
Cassian’s icy-blue eyes widened dramatically like two tennis balls. The unexpected force of the pastry insertion knocked him a half-step backward. His hands flew up, grabbing his own face in absolute shock.
"Chew up," Seraphina ordered, crossing her arms, staring him down with the absolute authority of a warlord.
Cassian was frozen.
His mouth was completely packed with soft, flaky dough.
And then... the payload detonated.
The rich, cold, incredibly sweet vanilla-bean cream burst from the center of the pastry, flooding his taste buds. The powdered sugar dissolved against his tongue.
The buttery, perfectly baked crust crumbled perfectly.
For three years, his palate had known only dry oats, bitter herbs, and well water.
The sudden introduction of high-tier, master-crafted Southern sugar hit his unaccustomed neurological pathways like a magical flashbang.
Cassian’s brain completely short-circuited.
The tenets of the Sun God vanished. The holy scriptures burned. The rigid, disciplined infrastructure of his Paladin training collapsed like a house of cards in a hurricane.
He didn’t spit it out.
He couldn’t.
Slowly, involuntarily, Cassian began to chew.
His icy-blue eyes lost their sharp, arrogant focus.
They fluttered, crossing slightly as a look of soul-shaking ecstasy washed over his flawless features. A faint, involuntary moan of pure joy vibrated in his throat.
The blush that had haunted him in the patisserie returned with a vengeance, flooding his face with brilliant, burning crimson, but this time, it wasn’t from embarrassment. It was from pure euphoria.
He chewed, and he swallowed.
He stood there in the courtyard, panting slightly, staring down at the tiny girl in the white dress, looking as though he had just witnessed a divine revelation that had completely shattered his worldview.
"It... it is..." Cassian whispered, his voice trembling, his pristine white glove coming up to wipe a tiny smudge of cream from his lips. "...It is glorious."
"I know," Seraphina smirked, holding out the platter with the two remaining cream puffs. "Do you want another one?"
Cassian looked at the platter.
He looked at the sky, as if expecting a bolt of holy lightning to strike him down for his sins. He looked back at the cream puffs.
The twelve-year-old prodigy of the Light, the boy destined to be the shining sword of the Church, slowly reached out a trembling hand.
He took the second cream puff. He didn’t lecture her, didn’t quote scripture.
He shoved it into his mouth and chewed with the feral intensity of a starving animal.
Seraphina beamed, her dark eyes sparkling with absolute triumph.
’Target officially corrupted,’ she cheered internally. ’The Ice Prince has fallen to the dark side with the power of cookies!’
For the rest of the afternoon, the dynamic between the two completely shifted.
Cassian did not lead her on a rigid, boring tour. He followed her through the gardens, sneaking into the kitchens with her, acting as her lookout while she pilfered candied nuts and imported chocolates.
The stiff, arrogant facade had cracked, revealing a slightly awkward, anxious, but undeniably fun twelve-year-old boy who was experiencing the joy of rebellion for the very first time.
"If the High Priest discovers this, I will be excommunicated," Cassian muttered frantically later that evening, sitting on a stone bench hidden behind a massive fire-lily bush, wiping chocolate from his pristine azure cape. His blue eyes darted around the courtyard in a state of pure paranoia. "This is a severe deviation from the path of righteousness!"
"Relax, Cassian," Seraphina laughed, swinging her legs, handing him another chocolate. "The High Priest isn’t here. And besides, if you get in trouble, I will tell Papa Duke to glare at them until they forgive you. Believe me! He is very scary!"
Cassian looked down at her.
The panic in his eyes faded, replaced by a soft, warm smile. The arrogance was gone.
"He is terrifying," Cassian agreed softly. "But... you are not."
He looked at the chocolate in his hand, then back at her. "Thank you, Lady Seraphina. For... for the corruption."
Seraphina giggled, bumping her small shoulder against his arm. "Anytime, swishy-cape. We’re accomplices now!"
It was a strange, bizarre, beautiful friendship born of sugar and rebellion.
For a few brief hours, Seraphina wasn’t a reincarnated soul managing her trauma and nagging her father, and Cassian wasn’t a holy weapon of the Church.
They were just two little kids, hiding in a bush, and eating candy.
And Seraphina realized, with a profound sense of warmth, that despite the madness of this world, she was actually, genuinely happy.

The morning of the departure arrived with the heavy, inevitable weight of finality.
The grand courtyard of the Obsidian Gate was packed. The mythril carriage gleamed in the sunlight, hitched to the massive warhorses of the Vanguard. Sir Lucas, Sir Boris, and Sir Gallahan stood at attention, their civilian disguises discarded entirely, wearing their full Northern plate armor. They looked like reapers ready for a harvest, their faces grim and professional.
