Take Me Away, Dark Lord!
Chapter 131: A Wife?
"A child needs balance," Lysandra urged softly. "A daughter needs a mother’s touch. She needs softness, guidance, and someone to teach her the delicate intricacies of the world that cannot be solved with a broadsword. Do you not think it is time, Kaelus? It is time you finally took a wife. The Empire is overflowing with noblewomen who would gladly step into the role of Duchess of the North. You need a partner to raise her properly."
The atmosphere in the solarium shifted instantly.
The warm, sunlit air seemed to freeze. The ambient temperature around Kaelus’s chair plummeted, frosting the edges of his wine glass.
Archduke Leonidas winced, physically stepping back, knowing exactly what kind of landmine his wife had just stepped on.
Seraphina stopped chewing. She looked up at Kaelus, her dark eyes wide.
’A wife?’ Seraphina thought, a irrational pang of striking her own heart. ’A new mom? Someone to take his attention away? Someone who might not like me?’
Kaelus von Nacht did not explode or yell.
He set his wine glass down on the table. The movement was slow, deliberate, and carried an air of finality.
He looked at Lysandra.
The respect remained in his eyes, but it was overshadowed by a fierce, unyielding, uncompromising territoriality.
"I appreciate your concern, Lysandra," Kaelus said. His voice was a low, vibrating rumble that commanded total silence. "Your intentions are pure. But you are fundamentally mistaken."
He reached across the table, his large, black-gloved hand gently, possessively covering Seraphina’s small hand where it rested near her plate.
"I do not require a partner to raise my daughter," Kaelus stated, the words forged from cold iron and absolute conviction. "I do not need a ’woman’s touch’ to teach her strength. I am perfectly capable of providing the softness she needs. I can braid her hair flawlessly. I can procure her pastries. I can shield her from the nightmares of this world."
His violet eyes darkened, staring directly into Lysandra’s amber ones.
"If I were to take a wife," Kaelus continued, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper, "I would be inviting a foreign variable into my sanctuary. A noblewoman from the South would not understand her. She would bring her own ambitions and bloodline."
Kaelus’s grip on Seraphina’s hand tightened slightly, a gesture of unbreakable reassurance.
"And eventually," Kaelus sneered, the very concept filling him with homicidal disgust, "that woman would demand to bear her own children. She would introduce a biological heir into the Bastion. She would attempt to marginalize Seraphina or create a succession crisis, and she would view my daughter not as a treasure, but as an obstacle to her own offspring’s power."
Kaelus leaned back in his chair, his aura flaring with undeniable, apex dominance.
"I will not allow it," the Reaper declared, his voice ringing with the weight of an eternal edict. "There will be no nagging interference in my home. There will be no stepmothers vying for my attention. Seraphina is my daughter. She is my sole, undisputed Heir to the North. I alone am enough for her, and she alone is enough for me."
The sincerity of his words hung in the sunlit air of the solarium.
Duchess Lysandra stared at the terrifying warlord. She saw the fierce, unyielding devotion burning in his eyes, and the way his hand shielded the child’s.
The Duchess smiled. It was a soft, conceding, incredibly fond smile.
She raised her hands in surrender.
"I yield, Kaelus," Lysandra chuckled softly, a tear of genuine emotion shining in her eye. "By the Light, I yield. I have never heard a more beautiful, terrifying declaration of love. You are right. She needs no one else. She is perfectly safe in your shadow."
Seraphina sat perfectly still.
The sharp pang of jealousy had evaporated, replaced by an overwhelming, soaring wave of pure adoration.
He didn’t want anyone else, didn’t care about bloodlines, or biological heirs, or political marriages.
He had looked at a society that demanded he take a wife, and he had essentially told the entire Empire to jump off a cliff because he was too busy braiding his adopted daughter’s hair.
She was his entire world.
Seraphina couldn’t contain it.
She scrambled out of her plush chair, completely abandoning her fruit tart, and ran around the table.
She threw herself at Kaelus, burying her face into his side, wrapping her arms as far around his broad torso as they could reach.
"You’re the best Papa in the universe," Seraphina mumbled into his shirt, her heart so full it felt like it might burst. "And your braids are excellent."
Kaelus’s cold, terrifying demeanor melted instantly. He let out a soft, huffing laugh, wrapping his arm around her, lifting her onto his knee. He rested his chin on her head, ignoring the amused, knowing looks from Leonidas and Lysandra.
"I am aware, Mushroom," Kaelus murmured fondly, his dark mana purring with absolute contentment.
As they sat in the sunlit garden, wrapped in the fierce, unbreakable bond of their chosen family, Seraphina suddenly remembered the very reason she had come looking for him in the first place.
She popped her head up, looking at Kaelus, then at Archduke Leonidas.
"Oh!" Seraphina gasped, her dark eyes widening. "I almost forgot my quest! Uncle Leo! The ghost grandpas told me to tell you to stop digging the hole! There’s a really bad bug in the forest!"
The romantic, heartwarming atmosphere of the solarium instantly shattered.
Archduke Leonidas Valen choked on his wine, violently spraying red liquid across the map of the Southern borders.
Kaelus von Nacht froze, his violet eyes snapping from his daughter to the sputtering Fire Archduke, realizing that the chaotic vacation in the South had just escalated from a political audit to an ancient crisis.
The sun-drenched, floral-scented atmosphere of Duchess Lysandra’s private solarium had just been shattered.
Archduke Leonidas Valen, the Supreme Commander of the Southern Legions and the undisputed Lord of the Flame, was currently coughing up a lungful of vintage Southern wine, spraying the crimson liquid across his intricately detailed military maps.
