Take Me Away, Dark Lord!
Chapter 123: Fire Mage?
Seraphina sat back on the velvet cushions, letting out a small, satisfied sigh.
Across from her, Kaelus was watching her intently.
His violet eyes were soft, completely lacking their usual harsh edge.
"You did not cry," Kaelus noted, his voice carrying a faint, inquisitive lilt. "I anticipated another... significant emotional discharge upon separation."
Seraphina crossed her arms, looking at him with immense smugness. "I do not cry over temporary separations, Papa. I am a Sovereign. I know we will meet again. Besides, Cedric still owes me a demonstration of blowing up a potion!"
Kaelus’s eyebrow twitched violently as he stared at her.
"If that boy attempts to bring volatile alchemical compounds within a fifty-mile radius of you, I will freeze his blood. I will not have my daughter lacking eyebrows."
"It’s just character building!" Seraphina argued happily, picking up a piece of blank parchment to begin a new flock of ducks.
Kaelus sighed, shaking his head, a fond smirk playing on his lips as he returned to his ledgers. The journey was back on track.

The transition from the humid, sprawling jungles of the Verdant Reach to the territory of the Archduchy of Valen was not subtle.
It was a geological assault on the senses.
Over the course of three days, the vibrant green canopy withered, giving way to barren, cracked earth. The temperature steadily climbed up.
The sky transitioned from a brilliant, crisp blue to a permanent, hazy, blood-orange hue, thick with the scent of sulfur, ash, and burning ozone.
They were entering a volcanic basin.
"The heat here is offensive," Sir Gallahan complained loudly, riding alongside the carriage, his pristine white cloak now permanently unfastened to allow for air circulation. "It lacks the honest, industrial grime of Iron-forge. This is just some meteorological arrogance."
Inside the carriage, the magical cooling stones were working overdrive, keeping the cabin a comfortable, brisk temperature. Seraphina was pressing her hand against the glass, marveling at the landscape.
The road they traveled on was literally paved with smooth, black obsidian, reflecting the orange sky like a mirror. In the distance, rising from the center of a massive, cracked caldera, was a fortress that defied logic.
It was the Obsidian Gate.
It wasn’t a castle; it was a military installation built by a madman obsessed with fire. Towering walls of jagged black volcanic rock soared hundreds of feet into the air, crowned not with banners, but with massive, eternally burning braziers that roared with pillars of arcane, crimson fire.
"Papa Duke," Seraphina whispered, her eyes wide. "That house is on fire."
"That is not a house, Seraphina," Kaelus replied, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal, terrifyingly calm register. He wasn’t wearing his casual canvas tunic anymore. He was fully armored in his darkest mythril plate. Requiem hung at his hip, the runes on the scabbard pulsing with faint, icy blue light. "That is the staging ground for the Southern Legions. It is the domain of Archduke Leonidas Valen."
He looked at her, his violet eyes completely serious.
"Leonidas is a zealot," Kaelus instructed, his tone echoing with military precision. "He is a Grandmaster of Fire. He believes that strength is the only currency the Empire respects. He views the North as a collection of cold, emotionless barbarians. Our arrival today is not just a diplomatic visit; it is a collision of opposing elements. He will attempt to intimidate us and show you that his fire is superior to my ice."
Seraphina swallowed hard.
The lore drop was intense.
A fire-mage zealot who hates Kaelus?
"Are we going to fight him?" she asked, clutching her stuffed dire-bear.
"No," Kaelus smirked, a dark, arrogant expression that sent a shiver down Seraphina’s spine. "We are going to humiliate him."
The carriage rolled onto the courtyard in front of the primary gates of the fortress.
The moment the wheels ground to a halt, the atmosphere outside exploded into an aggressive hostility.
Through the carriage window, Seraphina watched in awe and terror as the courtyard was flooded, not just greeted by servants or heralds.
From the shadows of the obsidian walls marched dozens, perhaps hundreds, of Imperial Fire Mages. They were clad in heavy, crimson-and-gold battle robes, their faces obscured by brass half-masks.
They moved with synchronized precision, immediately forming a multi-layered ring surrounding the carriage and the Vanguard.
And then, they raised their staves.
In unison, every single mage ignited their core.
FWOOSH!!!
A towering wall of roaring, blazing crimson fire erupted from the tips of their staves, creating a cage of inferno entirely enclosing the Black Bastion.
Even through the enchanted glass and the cooling arrays of the carriage, Seraphina felt a wave of blistering, suffocating heat hit her skin.
The air outside warped and shimmied violently.
"HOLD YOUR FORMATION!" Sir Lucas roared over the sound of the roaring flames, his broadsword drawn, his men locking their heavy shields together, preparing for a siege.
Inside the carriage, Kaelus von Nacht did not flinch.
He stood up, his massive armor clanking heavily. He didn’t draw his sword as he simply looked down at Seraphina.
"Remain seated, Mushroom," Kaelus commanded softly, his voice utterly devoid of fear. "Observe."
Kaelus pushed the carriage door open and stepped out onto the boarding step.
The moment the Archduke of the North exposed himself to the inferno, the Fire Mages pushed more mana into their staves, making the wall of fire roar higher, attempting to physically bake the Reaper in his armor.
Kaelus stood on the step, surrounded by a ring of blistering death. He looked at the mages, then looked at the roaring flames.
He looked bored.
Kaelus took a slow, deep breath, filling his lungs with the scorching, sulfur-laced air of the courtyard.
He closed his eyes as the very essence of the Glacial Abyss surged from his core.
It wasn’t a spell. He didn’t chant, or swing a sword.
He released a breath of zero.
The effect was instantaneous and catastrophic.
The roaring wall of crimson fire didn’t just go out; it went extinct.
