Chapter 70 — The Evolving Dungeon

The deeper the expedition moved, the more obvious the change became.

The first few hundred meters had looked like an ordinary A-rank dungeon. Large stone corridors, glowing mana crystals, scattered monster tracks, and patches of strange vegetation covered the underground terrain. The Association scouts had expected something similar from the preliminary readings.

But after entering the second zone, the environment began to change.

The mana became noticeably denser.

Subin could feel it against his skin.

It wasn't dangerous yet, but every breath carried more mana than the previous one.

The expedition leader, Han Yerin, noticed the change as well. She raised one hand, signaling the group to slow down.

"Stop here."

The twenty-four Awakeners halted.

A support specialist immediately checked the mana detector.

"Mana density is twenty-one percent higher than at the entrance."

Another technician looked at his equipment.

"That's not possible. The increase should have been much smaller."

Han Yerin frowned. "Could the equipment be malfunctioning?"

"I've checked it twice. It's working."

Subin looked ahead.

The corridor opened into a massive cavern.

A natural underground forest stretched across it.

Blue-leaved trees grew from the stone floor, their trunks filled with glowing lines of mana. Small pools of luminous liquid surrounded their roots. Strange fruits hung from branches, each one containing a dense concentration of energy.

The place looked almost peaceful.

Almost.

Subin noticed the tracks.

Hundreds of them.

Some were fresh.

Some were enormous.

"Don't enter yet," he said.

Several people looked at him.

Han Yerin turned around.

"Why?"

Subin pointed toward the forest.

"The monsters aren't hunting."

The scouts looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"They're feeding."

Subin's eyes moved across the cavern.

The monsters weren't scattered randomly.

Groups of creatures had gathered around the mana-rich plants and pools.

Some were eating.

Others were fighting over territory.

But unlike ordinary dungeon monsters, they weren't immediately attacking anything that moved.

They were conserving energy.

Adapting.

Growing.

A large Ironhide Lizard suddenly lifted its head.

Its body was already considerably larger than the specimens they had encountered outside.

A faint layer of metallic scales had begun developing around its neck.

Ironhide Lizard — Level 64

One of the scouts swallowed.

"It evolved."

The statement caused several people to tense.

Subin nodded.

"Probably recently."

The Association officer immediately began recording everything.

"Level sixty-four from a monster originally classified around fifty-five..."

Han Yerin looked at Subin.

"Can you tell how long it took?"

"No."

Subin paused.

"But I can tell it's not finished."

The lizard suddenly screamed.

Its body convulsed.

Mana surged through its scales.

Everyone instinctively prepared for an attack.

But the creature didn't attack them.

Instead, it collapsed onto the ground.

Its scales began cracking.

The surrounding monsters immediately moved away.

Subin's eyes narrowed.

"Back."

The expedition leader didn't hesitate.

"Everyone retreat!"

The group moved several meters away.

The Ironhide Lizard's body expanded.

Cracked scales fell away.

A new layer emerged beneath them.

The creature's mana suddenly exploded outward.

Level 64 → Level 66

Then—

Level 66 → Level 67

The evolution stopped.

The lizard slowly raised its head.

Its eyes were different.

Sharper.

More focused.

It looked toward the expedition.

The creature had become stronger.

But it wasn't the only one.

Across the forest, several other monsters began reacting to the mana surge.

A Blood-Claw Hyena howled.

Three more answered.

Then dozens.

The cavern suddenly became noisy.

Han Yerin tightened her grip on her spear.

"Prepare yourselves."

Subin drew Simple Edge.

The sword remained ordinary in appearance.

No overwhelming aura.

No massive release of Sword Intent.

Just a blade.

Yet the moment Subin held it, his entire posture changed.

The nearest monster charged.

It was a Fang Boar.

Its level had risen from the expected low fifties to Level 59.

The creature accelerated.

Subin waited.

At the final moment, he stepped aside.

The boar passed him.

His sword moved once.

A clean cut struck the creature behind the front leg.

The boar collapsed.

Subin didn't stop.

Another monster attacked from the right.

He turned his wrist.

Simple Edge intercepted its claws.

Instead of resisting the force directly, he redirected it.

The monster stumbled.

Subin's second cut ended the fight.

A third creature lunged.

He stepped backward, allowing its claws to pass inches from his chest.

His sword moved upward.

The monster fell.

Three movements.

Three kills.

No wasted energy.

The other expedition members finally joined the battle.

Magic exploded across the cavern.

Arrows flew.

Spears pierced monster bodies.

Shields blocked charging creatures.

The battle quickly became chaotic.

But Subin didn't feel overwhelmed.

He watched.

The monsters were stronger than the preliminary reports suggested, but their behavior remained relatively simple.

They attacked according to instinct.

They didn't coordinate.

They didn't understand formations.

That gave trained Awakeners a huge advantage.

Subin moved through the battlefield.

He didn't try to kill everything.

He focused on creatures that broke through the formation.

A Blood-Claw Hyena jumped toward a healer.

Subin cut it down.

An Ironhide Lizard charged the support group.

He intercepted it.

A Fang Boar slipped around the shield formation.

Subin redirected its charge and killed it.

His movements became increasingly efficient.

The battle lasted less than ten minutes.

Then the final monster collapsed.

Silence returned to the cavern.

Several Awakeners breathed heavily.

The support specialists immediately began collecting mana stones.

The Association officers recorded the monster levels.

Subin sheathed Simple Edge.

Han Yerin approached.

"You're not even breathing heavily."

"Neither are you."

She smiled.

"I'm used to it."

Subin looked toward the forest.

"So am I."

She followed his gaze.

"You think they'll continue evolving?"

"Yes."

"How much stronger?"

"I don't know."

He paused.

"But if the mana density keeps increasing, the monsters won't remain at their current levels."

Han Yerin's expression became serious.

"Then we need to determine why."

Subin nodded.

Not because he believed someone had created the dungeon for some hidden purpose.

There was no reason to assume that.

The simplest explanation was also the most important.

The dungeon had an unusually high mana supply.

And the ecosystem was responding.

That alone could become a major problem.

---

The expedition continued.

The third zone was considerably more dangerous.

Monster levels had risen again.

Stoneback Ogre — Level 63

Blood-Claw Hyena — Level 62

Ironhide Lizard — Level 68

Fang Boar Alpha — Level 71

The last one forced the expedition to stop.

A massive boar emerged from between two rock formations.

Its body was almost three meters long.

Two enormous tusks curved upward from its mouth.

Mana circulated visibly around its body.

The scout's expression changed.

"Level seventy-one."

One of the A-rank Awakeners stepped forward.

"I'll handle it."

The man carried a giant axe.

He charged.

The boar charged at the same time.

The collision shook the ground.

The axe struck the boar's head.

The monster staggered but didn't fall.

The man was thrown backward.

He landed heavily.

"Damn."

The boar charged again.

This time, Subin stepped forward.

"Wait."

The A-rank warrior looked at him.

Subin walked past.

Han Yerin immediately understood.

"Let him fight."

The others stepped back.

The Fang Boar Alpha lowered its head.

Subin stood several meters away.

He didn't release Sword Intent.

He wanted to understand the creature's movement first.

The boar charged.

Subin stepped sideways.

The tusks passed him.

He cut toward the neck.

The blade connected.

But the cut wasn't deep enough.

The boar turned faster than expected.

Its hind leg struck toward him.

Subin raised his arm and redirected the blow.

The force pushed him several meters backward.

He smiled faintly.

"Stronger than it looks."

The boar charged again.

This time Subin didn't evade immediately.

He watched its body.

Shoulder.

Hip.

Leg.

Breathing.

Mana circulation.

The moment before impact, the mana around the boar's front legs concentrated.

Subin understood.

Its acceleration wasn't purely physical.

It was using mana to reinforce the first step.

He changed his stance.

The boar attacked.

Subin moved at the same moment.

Simple Edge struck the ground.

The blade didn't attack the boar.

Instead, Subin used the impact to change his own movement.

His body rotated around the charging creature.

He appeared beside its shoulder.

One cut.

Two.

Three.

The third strike reached the weakened point beneath the neck.

The boar collapsed.

[Level 71 monster defeated.]

[Experience acquired.]

Subin looked at the corpse.

He had learned something useful.

The dungeon wasn't merely increasing monster levels.

The monsters were beginning to develop more efficient ways of using mana.

Their evolution wasn't simply increasing numbers.

It was changing behavior and physical capability.

That was far more important.

The A-rank warrior who had previously attacked the boar walked toward him.

"You saw the mana reinforcement."

Subin nodded.

"Yes."

"How?"

"I watched it."

The man laughed.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

The man shook his head.

"You're difficult to understand."

Subin didn't respond.

He looked deeper into the dungeon.

The cavern ahead was different from everything they'd encountered so far.

The walls were covered in enormous crystalline formations.

Blue.

Purple.

White.

Mana flowed through them like liquid beneath glass.

The Association detectors began making rapid warning sounds.

One technician stared at his screen.

"Mana density... forty-two percent."

Another checked his equipment.

"That's almost double the entrance reading."

Han Yerin's expression hardened.

"Can we proceed?"

The technician hesitated.

"Technically, yes."

"Technically?"

"If the readings continue increasing, the dungeon may become significantly more dangerous."

Han Yerin looked toward Subin.

He remained silent for several seconds.

Then he noticed something.

The crystals weren't merely storing mana.

They were absorbing it.

And the flow was moving deeper.

"There's a mana source further inside."

The technician immediately looked at his detector.

"Can you tell where?"

Subin pointed toward the crystal-covered passage.

"That direction."

Han Yerin looked at the expedition.

"We proceed another five hundred meters."

No one objected.

The group entered the crystal passage.

With every step, the mana became heavier.

Subin's perception sharpened.

His Sword God class responded naturally to the dense environment.

Not with a sudden power increase.

Instead, his understanding of the surrounding energy became clearer.

He could sense the direction of the mana.

The flow.

The pressure.

The changes.

Then a system notification appeared.

[Environmental Mana Saturation: 31.7%]

[Sword God Class Adaptation activated.]

[Class Evolution Progress: 72% → 73%]

Subin stopped.

The notification disappeared.

He looked at his hand.

His class had evolved by one percent.

Not through defeating a powerful enemy.

Not through obtaining a treasure.

Simply by entering an environment where his sword path could interact with a higher-density mana ecosystem.

Subin smiled slightly.

The world was changing.

His class was changing with it.

And he had no intention of falling behind.

The expedition continued deeper into the dungeon.

Ahead, the crystal passage opened into another enormous chamber.

Something was waiting there.

Not a person.

Not a mastermind.

Not some predetermined enemy.

Just another creature at the top of a growing ecosystem.

A huge silhouette slowly rose from the far side of the chamber.

The Association's detector began screaming.

Mana Level: A+

Estimated Level: 79

Classification: Unknown

The expedition members immediately prepared themselves.

Subin slowly drew Simple Edge.

The sword remained silent in his hand.

His eyes settled on the creature.

For the first time since entering the dungeon, he felt the pressure of a true A+ opponent.

He smiled.

"Now that's more interesting."

The creature roared.

The entire chamber shook.

The expedition entered combat formation.

And Subin stepped forward.
