168 - The Endless Forest

The forest quickly proved that its size could not be judged by the distance visible between the trees. Every direction looked similar at first, yet the terrain changed constantly as the expedition moved deeper. Some areas were covered by enormous roots that rose from the ground like walls, while others opened into broad clearings filled with silver grass and small pools of glowing water. The trees themselves seemed to form different layers of the ecosystem. Smaller creatures remained close to the ground, larger predators moved through the middle forest, and occasionally something enormous could be heard traveling through the canopy far above them.

Subin kept the group moving at a measured pace. There was no reason to waste energy fighting creatures that had not shown aggression, especially when the team still had no idea how far they were from the entrance. Ara had managed to restore some of her equipment, but the connection to Earth remained completely unavailable. Her system could still measure mana density, temperature, and distance, yet the moment she attempted to establish an external connection, the signal simply vanished.

“We've traveled approximately eight kilometers from the entrance,” Ara said after checking the equipment again. “But I can't confirm whether we're moving in a straight line.”

Jae-hyun looked around at the forest. “We are.”

Ara shook her head. “That's what I thought too. But the magnetic reference keeps changing.”

Liu Wei crouched beside one of the enormous roots. “Then perhaps the environment itself is affecting our navigation.”

Subin examined the root.

It wasn't simply a plant.

Thin crystalline lines were embedded beneath the bark, carrying faint pulses of mana through the tree. Similar lines could be seen beneath several neighboring trees, forming a web that disappeared into the ground.

“This forest has a network,” Subin said.

Ara immediately approached.

She scanned the root and widened her eyes. “It's not the same as the coastal territory.”

“Different?”

“Yes. The coastal network was mainly connected through water. This one is connected through living organisms.”

Subin looked around.

The realization changed how he viewed the entire environment.

The forest was not simply growing around the dungeon.

The forest itself was part of the dungeon's structure.

Yerin touched the bark of another tree and immediately withdrew her hand.

“It reacted.”

A faint pulse traveled through the trunk.

Several trees farther away responded in sequence, creating a chain of light that moved deeper into the forest.

The expedition became quiet.

Something had noticed them.

Subin did not draw his sword.

Instead, he waited.

Nothing attacked.

After several seconds, the lights disappeared.

Ara looked at the readings. “The mana circulation has returned to normal.”

“Then it wasn't a warning,” Ethan said.

“Maybe it was identification,” Subin replied.

Jae-hyun frowned. “Identification?”

“The forest knows we're here.”

They continued.

The deeper they went, the more diverse the environment became. Massive flowering plants opened when the team approached, releasing tiny glowing insects into the air. Small deer-like creatures drank from a stream and watched the humans cautiously before retreating into the vegetation. A group of large birds with metallic feathers flew overhead, their wings producing a low humming sound.

None of them behaved like ordinary dungeon monsters.

They were living within an ecosystem.

That made the expedition increasingly careful.

A dungeon that simply produced monsters could be mapped by enemy strength and terrain. This place had food chains, migration patterns, territorial behavior, and environmental relationships. Killing a predator might affect prey populations. Destroying a plant could remove a food source. Even seemingly harmless exploration could destabilize the area.

Near midday, the team reached a wide valley.

The trees became shorter here, allowing sunlight to reach the ground. A river passed through the center of the valley, its water perfectly clear despite the dense mana flowing through it.

Ara scanned the river.

“This is strange.”

“What now?” Jae-hyun asked.

“The water is coming from underground.”

She pointed toward the valley floor.

“There are several underground channels beneath us, but they aren't connected to the entrance.”

Subin walked toward the river and crouched beside it.

He could feel a familiar rhythm.

Water.

Mana.

Movement.

But unlike the territory network they had just studied on Earth, this system was much older and more stable.

A shadow passed beneath the water.

The group immediately became alert.

A long creature emerged from the river, its body covered in pale scales and its head shaped somewhat like a serpent. It rose several meters above the surface before looking directly at Subin.

The system identified it.

Yerin tightened her grip on her spear.

The serpent did not attack.

It simply watched.

Subin slowly stood.

“You're in its territory,” Rafael said quietly.

“I know.”

“Then perhaps we should move.”

Subin studied the serpent.

Its body showed no signs of aggression. Instead, it seemed to be examining the humans in the same way the Forest Tyrant Wolf had.

Subin stepped away from the river.

The serpent lowered its head and returned to the water.

The entire encounter lasted less than a minute.

Yet it told Subin something important.

The creatures here were not automatically hostile toward humans.

Their reactions depended on the circumstances.

That meant the expedition could explore without turning every encounter into a battle.

They followed the river downstream until the valley narrowed into a natural corridor. Along the walls, strange trees grew horizontally from the rock, their roots suspended over the water. Several of the metallic birds from earlier were nesting among them.

Then the forest changed.

The trees became darker.

The glowing vegetation disappeared.

Even the air felt heavier.

Ara checked her equipment.

“Mana density has increased by almost forty percent.”

Jae-hyun looked ahead. “And the temperature dropped.”

Subin stopped.

There were footprints on the ground.

Large ones.

Much larger than those of the Forest Tyrant Wolf.

The marks continued along the riverbank and disappeared beneath a cluster of enormous roots.

Ethan crouched beside one.

“These are fresh.”

“How strong?” Liu Wei asked.

Ethan examined the depth of the imprint.

“Whatever made them is heavy.”

A low sound echoed from the forest.

Not a roar.

A vibration.

The ground trembled beneath their feet.

Subin drew Simple Edge.

The others prepared themselves.

Branches snapped in the distance.

A massive creature stepped out from behind the trees.

It was unlike anything they had encountered on Earth.

Its body resembled a bear, but it stood nearly eight meters tall. Thick dark fur covered its body, while several crystalline plates grew naturally along its shoulders and spine. Two curved horns extended backward from its head.

The system appeared.

The creature looked directly at Subin.

Its eyes were calm.

But unlike the previous monsters, it did not simply ignore the expedition.

It stepped forward.

The ground cracked beneath its weight.

Yerin moved beside Subin.

“Do we fight?”

Subin studied the creature's posture.

“No.”

The Guardian raised one enormous paw.

Everyone tensed.

Instead of attacking, it struck the ground beside the river.

A shockwave traveled through the soil.

Several trees shook.

Then the river changed direction.

Water that had been flowing downstream suddenly divided, with one section disappearing beneath the ground.

Ara's equipment immediately reacted.

“Wait.”

She checked the readings.

“There is a passage under us.”

The Guardian stepped aside.

Behind it, a section of the forest floor had opened, revealing a large stone staircase descending into darkness.

Jae-hyun stared at it.

“You're saying that thing just showed us a dungeon entrance?”

Subin looked at the Guardian.

The creature remained still.

It wasn't attacking.

It was waiting.

Subin sheathed his sword.

“We follow the stairs.”

Yerin looked at him. “You trust it?”

“No.”

He looked down into the passage.

“But it has given us a choice.”

The team descended.

The staircase continued much farther than expected, eventually opening into a vast underground chamber. The walls were covered in enormous roots, while a river flowed through the center of the cavern. Crystals grew along the ceiling, illuminating the area with soft blue light.

Ara scanned the surroundings.

“This isn't a normal dungeon floor.”

“What is it?” Rafael asked.

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Subin approached the river.

The same network he had felt above ground continued below, but here it was far more concentrated.

The roots were connected to the water.

The water was connected to the crystals.

And the crystals were connected to the forest.

The entire environment formed one continuous system.

Then something appeared on the opposite side of the cavern.

A stone structure.

It resembled a gate, but there was no door within it.

Instead, the center contained a vertical surface of dark water.

Subin walked closer.

The system activated.

Ara immediately stepped forward.

“A boundary.”

Subin stared at the dark water.

“So this forest isn't the whole dungeon.”

A low rumble echoed through the cavern.

Behind them, the Ancient Forest Guardian appeared at the top of the staircase.

It did not follow.

It simply stood there, watching.

Subin understood.

The creature had not brought them to this place because it wanted them gone.

It had brought them here because they had reached the edge of its territory.

Beyond the gate lay something different.

Something the forest itself did not control.

Subin looked at the dark water.

“We've found the first region.”

Yerin stood beside him.

“And the next one?”

Subin rested his hand on Simple Edge.

“We'll find out.”

He stepped toward the boundary.

The surface of the dark water rippled before him.

Beyond it, faint red light appeared.

The forest behind them remained silent.

The expedition had crossed the first ecosystem.

Now they were standing at the entrance to whatever came next.
