164 - The Three-Way Connection

The underground chamber remained silent after the final pulse disappeared into the eastern passage. The enormous crystalline core embedded within the black mountain continued to glow faintly, but its earlier activity had settled into a slow rhythm. The team stayed where they were for several minutes, studying the structure without approaching it. They had learned enough from the coastal territory to understand that these formations did not behave like ordinary dungeon cores, and damaging one simply because they did not understand it could create consequences far beyond the immediate area.

Ara continued examining the readings while the others discussed their next move. "The three signals are still connected," she said eventually. "The coastal region, this mountain core, and the eastern signal are exchanging energy, but the connection isn't stable yet. If I had to estimate, the eastern region is still developing."

Jae-hyun glanced toward the passage leading deeper into the mountain. "Then we should follow it before the connection becomes stronger."

"We should investigate it," Yerin corrected. "There's a difference between investigating and charging ahead."

Min-seok gave Jae-hyun a sideways glance. "You should listen to her more often."

Jae-hyun ignored him.

Subin walked toward the edge of the underground river and watched the faint blue light moving beneath its surface. The water was flowing toward the eastern passage, and the crystalline veins along the walls had grown slightly brighter since the third signal appeared. Nothing about the change suggested an immediate threat, but the pattern was becoming clearer. The territory was using natural routes to connect distant regions, and the mountain core seemed to function as a junction rather than a destination.

"We don't need to reach the eastern region today," Subin said. "We need to know what lies between here and there."

Rafael nodded. "A smaller reconnaissance team?"

"Yes. The rest can return to the command center and coordinate with the Association."

Diego looked toward the tunnel. "I'll take the local team back. We can secure the route we've already explored and prevent anyone from entering without authorization."

Subin agreed. The decision was practical. There was little value in dragging a large international team through unfamiliar underground territory when their objective was simply to determine the nature of the eastern connection. Yerin remained with Subin, along with Ara, Jae-hyun, Ethan, Liu Wei, and Rafael. The others began preparing for the return journey while the smaller group continued toward the eastern passage.

The tunnel narrowed as they advanced, but it never became difficult to navigate. The crystalline growth was less concentrated here, and the walls gradually returned to ordinary stone. Every few hundred meters, however, they encountered signs that the network had passed through the area: patches of blue crystal embedded in the rock, unusual vegetation growing beside the river, and occasional tracks belonging to creatures that had clearly followed the water from deeper within the mountains.

After nearly an hour, the river split into two branches. One continued east while the other descended sharply into a lower cavern.

Ara checked her equipment and frowned. "The signal is coming from both."

"Both?" Ethan asked.

She nodded. "The eastern signal isn't a single point anymore. It's spreading."

Subin studied the two routes. The lower branch carried a stronger current, but the eastern passage contained more crystalline growth. Neither route was obviously more important.

Rafael crouched near the riverbank and examined the tracks. "These creatures are using both."

Subin followed the tracks with his eyes. Some led into the lower cavern, while others continued east. The territory was not forcing everything along one path. It was establishing several routes simultaneously, allowing the ecosystem to adapt around them.

"Take the eastern passage," Subin said. "We'll send a small group through the lower route and meet them farther ahead."

Rafael volunteered to lead the second group, taking Ethan with him. Subin, Yerin, Ara, Jae-hyun, and Liu Wei continued along the main passage.

The two groups remained connected through communication devices, but after another twenty minutes, the underground network interfered with the signal. The connection became unstable before disappearing entirely.

"That's inconvenient," Jae-hyun said.

Ara checked her equipment. "The crystalline concentration is increasing. It seems to interfere with the signal."

Subin wasn't particularly concerned. "Rafael knows the route. We'll reconnect once we leave the dense section."

The passage eventually opened into a long underground valley. Unlike the earlier caverns, this one had a ceiling so high that their lights could not reach it. A river flowed through the center, surrounded by trees that had somehow grown without sunlight. Their leaves carried a faint silver-blue glow, and the roots extended directly into the water.

Yerin slowed as she saw the landscape.

"This wasn't here before."

"No," Subin said.

The valley had clearly formed recently. The trees were healthy but young, and crystalline structures were scattered around their roots. The entire ecosystem appeared to have developed around the newly altered river.

Ara scanned the area.

"There's life everywhere."

Several small creatures moved between the trees. Most were unfamiliar, but none displayed aggressive behavior. One resembled a large fox with translucent ears, while another looked like a six-legged deer with small crystal formations growing along its back.

The creatures watched the group but did not approach.

Subin lowered his sword.

"Don't disturb them."

Jae-hyun looked around. "We're not going to."

"Good."

They continued through the valley.

The farther they went, the more established the ecosystem became. Small streams joined the main river, plants grew along the banks, and larger creatures occasionally appeared in the distance. It felt less like a dungeon and more like a natural region that had somehow been inserted beneath the mountain.

Then a powerful roar echoed through the valley.

The smaller creatures immediately disappeared into the vegetation.

Yerin's spear appeared in her hand.

Subin stopped.

A large creature emerged from between the trees.

It was approximately eight meters long, with a muscular body covered in dark green scales and four powerful legs. A pair of curved horns extended backward from its head, while crystalline growths covered its shoulders.

Ara scanned it.

"Level 149. A+ rank."

The creature stared at them.

It did not charge.

Instead, it lowered its head and drank from the river.

Jae-hyun relaxed slightly.

"Another one."

Subin watched the creature carefully.

It wasn't behaving like the A+ predators they had encountered earlier. There was no territorial display, no attempt to intimidate them, and no aggression. It seemed to consider them irrelevant.

Yerin lowered her spear.

"We should keep moving."

Subin agreed.

They passed the creature without incident.

Several minutes later, they received a brief communication signal.

Rafael's voice came through with heavy interference.

"Subin, we've found something."

The transmission broke.

Subin tried to respond.

"Rafael, repeat."

Only static answered.

Ara checked the communication device.

"The signal is coming from below us."

Subin immediately understood.

"The lower route."

They reached a rocky ledge overlooking a deep cavern. Far below, the underground river from the lower passage joined the main river.

Rafael's group was nowhere visible.

Then a light appeared beneath the water.

Another followed.

A third.

The lights moved toward the center of the cavern before rising through the water.

Rafael's voice finally returned.

"We're below you."

Subin looked down.

Rafael, Ethan, and the rest of their group stood on a rocky platform beside the underground river.

"What's there?" Subin asked.

Rafael pointed toward the opposite wall.

A massive opening had formed there.

Beyond it was not another tunnel.

It was an enormous underground lake.

The water stretched farther than their lights could reach, and several enormous creatures moved beneath its surface.

At the center of the lake stood a crystalline structure.

It was unlike anything they had seen before.

Instead of growing from the ground, it floated above the water.

Its surface was divided into three interconnected sections, each carrying a different color of light.

Ara stared at it.

"The three signals."

Subin understood immediately.

The coastal territory was one signal.

The mountain core was another.

The eastern region was the third.

But the floating structure was connecting all three.

Rafael's voice became serious.

"This thing wasn't here when we arrived."

Subin looked at the structure.

"How long ago?"

"Less than ten minutes."

The structure pulsed.

The lake responded.

A wave moved outward from the center, causing the entire cavern to tremble.

The three sections of the crystal brightened simultaneously.

Then the eastern section projected a faint image above the water.

It was not a map.

It was a landscape.

Mountains.

A wide river.

A vast forest.

And beyond the forest, something enormous moving across the horizon.

The image disappeared almost immediately.

Nobody spoke.

Ara checked her readings.

"The eastern connection has stabilized."

Subin looked at the floating crystal.

"And the signal?"

"It's stronger."

"How much?"

Ara hesitated.

"Strong enough that the network now extends beyond our previous detection range."

Yerin looked toward the eastern passage.

"Then the connection isn't ending here."

"No," Subin said.

The realization was becoming unavoidable. The coastal dungeon had connected with the mountain region, and the mountain region had connected with another territory farther east. Each connection created another route, and each route could potentially lead to an entirely different ecosystem.

The world was not simply gaining isolated dungeons anymore.

It was becoming interconnected.

Before the team could decide what to do next, the surface communication system suddenly activated.

Kang's voice came through clearly.

"Subin, we have an emergency."

Subin immediately responded.

"What happened?"

"The coastal formation has changed."

"How?"

"Several new structures have appeared offshore."

"How many?"

"We're still counting."

There was a pause.

Then Kang continued.

"But that's not the main problem."

Subin waited.

"The structures are not expanding outward anymore."

Ara's expression changed.

"Then what are they doing?"

Kang answered.

"They're moving."

The team looked toward the floating crystal.

The three connected sections had begun rotating slowly.

Subin's grip tightened around Simple Edge.

The network was no longer merely creating connections.

It was beginning to move them.

And whatever destination the system had chosen next was beyond anything humanity had yet mapped.
