162 - Redirecting the Frontier

The abandoned industrial zone had been unused for more than a decade, but the underground reservoir beneath it had survived almost untouched. The old buildings above ground were mostly empty shells of concrete and rusted steel, surrounded by weeds and cracked roads. It was far enough from the city that an emergency operation could be conducted without immediately putting civilians in danger, yet close enough to the underground water system that the expanding territory could potentially be redirected toward it.

By the time Subin's team arrived, Association personnel had already established a perimeter around the entire area. Heavy equipment had been brought in, but nobody was using it yet. The real work had to be done underground, where the newly forming passages were approaching the city's water network.

Kang appeared on the main communication screen.

"We have approximately forty minutes before the expanding route reaches the first major junction beneath the city."

Subin looked at the map displayed on the command vehicle.

"Then we have forty minutes to open the alternative route."

Ara shook her head.

"Not open. The route already exists."

She enlarged the underground map.

"The old reservoir connects to the same underground river system. What we need to do is create a stronger path toward it."

Rafael frowned.

"How?"

Ara looked toward Subin.

"The crystalline network responds to environmental flow. We've already seen it follow water."

Subin understood.

"If we change the water flow, the territory may follow it."

"Exactly."

Min-seok looked at the old industrial pipes around them.

"So we're going to redirect a dungeon using plumbing."

A few people laughed.

Subin smiled faintly. "Something like that."

The humor disappeared quickly as another tremor shook the ground.

Dust fell from the abandoned buildings.

Everyone looked toward the city.

The operation had begun.

Subin, Yerin, Jae-hyun, Min-seok, Ethan, Liu Wei, Rafael, Diego, and Ara entered the underground access tunnel while the remaining Awakeners secured the surface. The passage beneath the industrial zone was older than the crystalline network, with concrete walls surrounding a large drainage channel.

Water flowed through it.

But the water was already changing.

Thin strands of pale blue light had begun appearing beneath its surface.

"The network is here," Ara said.

Subin looked downstream.

The old reservoir was several hundred meters away.

"If we can increase the flow in that direction, the territory may follow."

"There's a control gate ahead," Diego said. "It was part of the old water system."

They reached the gate after several minutes.

It was massive, rusted, and partially covered by crystalline growth.

Jae-hyun examined it.

"Can we open it?"

Diego shook his head.

"Not mechanically. The system hasn't been used in years."

Subin approached the gate.

He placed one hand against the metal.

The crystalline growth responded.

Pale light spread across the rusted surface.

The gate trembled.

Subin immediately stepped back.

"It recognizes the water."

Ara looked at the readings.

"The crystalline structure is reacting to pressure."

"Then let's give it pressure."

The team began clearing the old channel.

Jae-hyun and Min-seok broke through several collapsed sections while Ethan and Liu Wei reinforced the weakened walls. Rafael coordinated the local Awakeners, making sure the work remained organized rather than turning into a chaotic display of raw power.

Within ten minutes, the old channel had been reopened.

Water began moving faster.

The gate remained closed.

Subin looked at the structure.

"It needs a trigger."

Yerin stepped beside him.

"Can your sword do it?"

"I don't know."

He drew Simple Edge.

He wasn't trying to cut the gate.

Instead, he released a controlled wave of Sword Intent into the crystalline network.

The effect was immediate.

The pale light spread through the walls.

The gate groaned.

Then it moved.

Slowly at first, but steadily.

Water rushed through the opening.

The entire underground passage shook.

Ara watched her screen.

"The network is responding."

"Which direction?"

She turned the display toward Subin.

"Toward the reservoir."

The plan was working.

But only partially.

The underground route leading toward the city was still active.

Subin looked at the map.

"We need to weaken the city branch."

Jae-hyun understood.

"If we redirect all the water, the network may still continue along the existing path."

"Right."

Min-seok looked at the map.

"Can we block it?"

"Not permanently."

Subin thought for a moment.

"We don't need to block it. We only need to make the reservoir route more attractive."

Rafael looked at the water rushing through the old channel.

"Then we increase the flow."

Ara nodded.

"But the reservoir can only handle so much."

"How much?"

"About three times the current volume."

Subin looked toward the tunnel.

"Then we'll use three times."

They moved deeper into the system.

The old industrial water network had several secondary channels that had once supplied factories throughout the region. Most were blocked, but enough remained connected to influence the underground flow.

The team divided.

Yerin and Jae-hyun took the northern channels.

Min-seok and Rafael handled the western route.

Ethan and Liu Wei opened the eastern conduits.

Subin and Ara remained at the central junction.

The work was not without resistance.

As the water level rose, creatures began appearing from the tunnels.

They were not attacking deliberately, but the sudden change in their environment caused them to move rapidly through the network.

A group of armored reptiles emerged from the darkness.

Min-seok blocked their path.

"Go around."

The creatures hesitated.

He stepped aside.

To everyone's surprise, they did exactly that.

They passed him and continued toward the reservoir.

Min-seok watched them disappear.

"They really are following the water."

Rafael nodded.

"At least now we know."

A louder sound came from the northern tunnel.

Yerin's voice came through the communication system.

"We have a problem."

Subin immediately responded.

"What happened?"

"The city branch is collapsing."

Ara looked at her map.

"That's not a problem."

Yerin paused.

"It is when you're standing inside it."

Subin moved immediately.

He and Ara reached the northern junction within minutes.

A section of the tunnel had collapsed, trapping Yerin and several Association Awakeners on the opposite side. Water was rising rapidly.

Jae-hyun was already trying to clear the debris.

Subin examined the broken section.

The crystals had grown through the collapsed concrete, making it impossible to simply remove the rubble.

"We need to cut the structure."

Yerin looked at him.

"Will that affect the network?"

"Yes."

"How much?"

"I don't know."

She nodded.

"Then do it."

Subin raised Simple Edge.

His sword moved once.

The crystalline structure separated cleanly.

The collapsed section shifted.

Jae-hyun immediately pulled the debris aside while the others moved through.

The water level continued rising.

Subin looked at the city branch.

The crystalline network was beginning to withdraw from the damaged section.

Ara stared at her device.

"It's weakening."

"Good."

"But the reservoir route is getting stronger."

Subin nodded.

The redirection was working.

They returned to the central junction.

The underground network had changed significantly. The path toward the city was now faint, while the route toward the abandoned reservoir had become bright with crystalline growth.

Water poured through the old system at a much higher rate.

Then the entire network went silent.

The vibrations stopped.

Everyone waited.

Nothing happened.

Ara checked her equipment.

"The expansion has stopped."

Min-seok leaned against the wall.

"That's it?"

"For now," Ara said.

Subin looked at the map.

The route toward the city had disappeared completely.

But the reservoir route had expanded.

The territory had accepted the new direction.

Above them, the surface command center reported the same thing. The inland formations stopped growing, and the crystalline structures near the city gradually dimmed.

The immediate threat was over.

But Subin noticed something else.

The new route didn't end at the reservoir.

It continued beyond it.

Farther inland.

Ara zoomed out.

Her expression changed.

"There's another connection."

"Where?"

She pointed toward the map.

"Mountains."

Subin stared at the route.

It passed through the abandoned reservoir, continued beneath the industrial zone, and then followed an underground river toward a mountain range.

The path extended far beyond the region they had initially considered.

Rafael approached.

"That doesn't look accidental."

"No," Subin said.

The territory was following natural pathways.

Water.

Caves.

Rivers.

Underground formations.

It wasn't choosing cities or countries.

It was choosing geography.

That realization changed the way they needed to approach the problem.

The territory couldn't be stopped simply by drawing a boundary on a map.

It would move wherever the environment allowed it to move.

When the team returned to the surface, the sun was already beginning to set.

The industrial zone remained quiet.

The distant city was safe.

For the first time since the coastal formations appeared, there was a sense that humanity had gained some control over the situation.

Kang's voice came through the communication system.

"All civilian areas remain secure. The city has reported no unusual monster activity."

Yerin walked over to Subin.

"So we succeeded."

"For now."

She smiled.

"You really don't know how to celebrate."

Subin looked toward the mountains.

"I think we learned something more important."

"What?"

He pointed toward the distant horizon.

"We can't treat these territories like dungeons."

Yerin followed his gaze.

"They're ecosystems."

"More than that."

Subin looked at the crystalline formation visible far along the coast.

"They're becoming part of the world."

Yerin was quiet.

She understood the implication.

If these territories remained, humanity would eventually have to build around them, travel through them, trade with them, and perhaps even defend them.

The world was gaining new borders that had not been drawn by humans.

But before the team could leave, Ara suddenly called out.

"Subin."

He turned.

Her expression was different.

She was looking at a new reading.

"The network just sent something."

"What?"

She enlarged the display.

A single pulse had traveled through the entire underground system.

From the coast to the reservoir.

From the reservoir to the mountains.

Then beyond.

The signal continued farther than their instruments could measure.

Ara looked up.

"I think the territory just connected to something on the other side of the mountain."

Subin stared at the screen.

"Can you identify it?"

"No."

A second pulse traveled through the network.

This time, something answered.

The response came from deep within the mountains.

The entire command center fell silent.

Subin slowly looked toward the distant peaks.

The coastal frontier had been redirected.

But it had not stopped expanding.

It had simply found another direction.
