Chapter 132 — The Island Dungeon

The following morning, the Association was already preparing the Philippine expedition.

Unlike the international mission in Italy, this operation was expected to involve direct combat. The preliminary reports showed that the newly formed dungeon had appeared near a mountainous region on a relatively isolated island, where the first monster sightings had already forced nearby settlements to evacuate. The dungeon had initially been classified as B+, but its mana density had increased rapidly enough that the local authority had requested an immediate reassessment.

Subin arrived at the Association before sunrise. Yerin was already there, checking her spear and reviewing the mission report on a tablet. Min-seok stood nearby with his arms crossed, looking considerably more enthusiastic about the mission than anyone else.

Ara arrived a few minutes later.

"You look excited," she said to Min-seok.

"I am."

"We haven't even reached the dungeon."

"Exactly. That's why I'm excited."

Jae-hyun walked in behind them. He had become noticeably more relaxed around the group over the past few months. The hostility that had once existed between him and Subin had not completely disappeared, but it had transformed into something much healthier—a rivalry that pushed both of them forward rather than a resentment that demanded one of them fall.

"I heard there are two local A-rankers joining us," Jae-hyun said.

Director Kang entered the briefing room.

"Three."

Everyone looked at him.

"Three?"

"The Philippine Awakener Authority has assigned three A-rankers. They have been operating around the region since the dungeon appeared."

The screen displayed their profiles.

Miguel Santos, A-rank warrior and former coast guard rescue specialist. His ability reinforced his body and allowed him to manipulate the momentum of objects he touched.

Isabella Reyes, A-rank water-element Awakener and former marine biologist. Her ability allowed her to manipulate surrounding water and condense mana into high-pressure attacks.

Noah Cruz, A-rank beast tamer who had awakened only six months earlier. Before Awakening, he had worked with rescue dogs and wildlife rehabilitation programs.

Min-seok studied the profiles.

"A beast tamer."

Ara looked interested.

"That's rare."

Director Kang nodded.

"His ability is unusual. He can temporarily establish a mana contract with creatures that willingly respond to him. He currently has three contracted beasts."

The screen showed three creatures: a large black wolf, a winged reptile, and a compact armored boar.

Yerin looked toward Subin.

"This could be useful."

Subin nodded.

Director Kang continued.

"The dungeon's current estimated monster range is seventy-five to one hundred twenty. However, the growth rate is unusual. Yesterday's readings were approximately twenty percent lower."

Jae-hyun frowned.

"So it is evolving quickly."

"Yes."

Subin looked at the data.

"How long has it existed?"

"Nine days."

The room became quiet.

Min-seok stared at him.

"Nine days?"

Director Kang nodded.

"Nine days."

Subin continued reading.

That was the part that interested him most.

The dungeon wasn't simply strong for its age.

It was developing unusually quickly.

"We should assume the environment is unstable," Subin said.

Director Kang nodded.

"Correct. That's why this is an investigation and controlled clearing operation. You will not pursue the deepest region unless the team leader determines that it is safe."

Yerin nodded.

"I'll lead."

Subin looked at her.

"Understood."

Their flight to the Philippines was shorter than their previous international journey, and by the time they reached the local command center, the team had already received updated reports.

The dungeon was located several kilometers from a coastal settlement. The surrounding forest had changed significantly since its appearance. Several plants had grown at abnormal rates, and the local authority had recorded multiple monster species that had not been present in the region before the dungeon emerged.

Miguel Santos met them at the command center.

He was a tall man in his early thirties with a calm expression.

"I've heard about your team."

Min-seok smiled.

"Hopefully good things."

Miguel laughed.

"Mostly."

Isabella arrived shortly afterward.

She looked at the group with obvious curiosity.

"So you're Subin."

Subin nodded.

"Yes."

"Your reputation arrived before you did."

Subin didn't know how to respond to that.

Yerin smiled.

"He's still getting used to it."

Noah Cruz arrived last, accompanied by his three contracted beasts.

The black wolf immediately noticed Subin.

It stared at him for several seconds.

Noah looked embarrassed.

"Sorry. He does that."

Subin crouched slightly.

The wolf approached.

Instead of growling, it sniffed Subin's hand and then calmly stepped back.

Noah looked surprised.

"He doesn't usually trust strangers."

Subin stood.

"He probably doesn't have a reason not to."

Min-seok laughed.

"That's the most Subin answer possible."

The team departed for the dungeon before noon.

The journey through the forest took nearly an hour. The terrain became increasingly strange as they approached the dungeon.

Trees had grown to enormous heights.

Several vines were thick enough to resemble tree trunks.

Small streams ran through the forest, but their water carried faint traces of mana.

Isabella stopped beside one.

"The water wasn't like this yesterday."

Subin looked at the stream.

"Mana concentration?"

"Low."

"Then it isn't dangerous."

They continued.

The dungeon entrance was located inside a rocky cliff.

Unlike the Italian dungeon, it had a conventional entrance: a large dark opening surrounded by black stone.

The moment they entered, the temperature dropped.

Yerin immediately raised her spear.

"Formation."

The team moved into position.

Miguel and Jae-hyun took the front-left and front-right.

Yerin remained at the center.

Subin moved slightly ahead.

Min-seok stayed close enough to support either side.

Ara and Isabella remained behind the main line.

Noah's beasts spread through the surrounding area.

The first monsters appeared within minutes.

They were large insect-like creatures with hardened shells and elongated limbs.

Their levels ranged from seventy-eight to eighty-six.

Miguel charged first.

His fist struck one creature's shell.

Instead of simply knocking it backward, the force traveled through the body and launched it sideways into another monster.

Min-seok whistled.

"That's useful."

Miguel smiled.

"It's better when there are more enemies."

The battle developed quickly.

The insects moved aggressively but lacked the coordinated behavior seen in the Italian dungeon.

Yerin pierced one through its abdomen while Jae-hyun cut another across the neck.

Ara's magic swept through a cluster while Isabella used condensed water blades to finish wounded targets.

Subin moved between them, striking only when necessary.

Within several minutes, the chamber was clear.

Noah's black wolf sniffed the corpses.

"It's strange," Noah said.

"What?" Yerin asked.

"The monsters."

He crouched beside one.

"They're adapted to the environment."

Subin examined it.

The creature's shell contained traces of minerals from the surrounding rock.

"They've already changed."

Miguel looked surprised.

"After nine days?"

Subin nodded.

"They're adapting quickly."

They continued deeper.

The dungeon itself was relatively small compared with Greenfall or Blackstone.

That made the changes easier to observe.

The walls gradually became covered in roots.

The roots weren't simply growing through the dungeon.

They were drawing mana from the stone.

Isabella touched one carefully.

"It's absorbing the dungeon's mana."

Subin nodded.

"And returning something."

She looked at him.

"Returning?"

He pointed toward a nearby plant.

Its leaves were glowing faintly.

"Life energy."

The group slowed down.

Subin didn't answer immediately.

Eventually, they reached a large underground cavern.

A shallow lake covered most of the floor.

The water was crystal clear.

At its center stood a massive tree.

The entire tree glowed faintly.

Isabella stared.

Miguel looked at her.

She pointed toward the tree.

Subin stepped closer.

A large creature emerged from the lake.

Miguel tightened his fists.

Subin studied it.

The creature wasn't attacking.

It stood between the group and the giant tree.

Yerin raised her spear.

"Defensive formation."

Subin watched the creature carefully.

Its attention wasn't focused on them.

It was focused on the tree.

Then he noticed the mana flowing through the lake.

The creature wasn't protecting the tree.

It was feeding from the same mana source.

"Wait."

Everyone stopped.

Subin pointed toward the lake.

Miguel looked at him.

"It could still attack."

"Yes."

The creature opened its jaws.

Water began rising around its body.

Subin stepped forward.

"Don't attack first."

Min-seok frowned.

"You sure?"

"No."

Min-seok sighed.

"That's not reassuring."

The creature suddenly charged.

Yerin reacted instantly.

Her spear intercepted its head, redirecting the attack.

Miguel struck its side and changed its momentum.

Jae-hyun attacked from the opposite direction.

The creature crashed into the water.

It rose again almost immediately.

Its body had absorbed mana from the lake.

"Don't attack the body."

The team adjusted.

Instead of trying to overpower the creature, they began forcing it away from the lake.

Isabella manipulated the water around it, creating resistance.

Miguel changed its momentum.

Jae-hyun controlled its escape route.

Yerin maintained pressure.

Subin waited.

The creature tried to return to the lake.

Subin moved.

His sword cut through the thin mana connection between the creature and the water.

The flow broke.

Noah stared.

"It weakened."

Subin nodded.

"It was using the lake as reinforcement."

The creature roared and charged again.

This time Subin met it directly.

His sword passed through the gap between two crystalline plates.

The creature collapsed.

The team stood quietly.

Subin looked at the lake.

"Don't take its core."

Miguel frowned.

"Why?"

"It belongs to the ecosystem."

The group understood.

They left the creature alive.

After several minutes, it slowly returned to the water.

The dungeon had been changing around them, but unlike the Italian dungeon, this place seemed to be developing through the interaction of mana, plants, water, and monsters.

The team decided not to go deeper.

They had already found enough information.

As they prepared to leave, Noah suddenly called out.

"Wait."

Everyone turned.

The black wolf was staring toward the giant tree.

A small creature was sitting between its roots.

It wasn't aggressive.

Noah's wolf slowly approached it.

The little creature didn't run.

Instead, it touched its nose against the wolf's.

Noah looked stunned.

"They're communicating."

Subin watched the two creatures.

The scene was strangely peaceful.

Now it had predators, prey, plants, water, mana channels, and relationships between creatures.

The dungeon wasn't simply becoming stronger.

It was becoming alive.

Yerin looked at Subin.

"Should we report this?"

"Yes."

"And recommend closing the dungeon?"

Subin shook his head.

"No."

She smiled.

"I thought you'd say that."

"We don't know what it will become."

Subin looked toward the glowing tree.

"Destroying it now would erase something we haven't understood yet."

The team began their return.

The dungeon remained quiet behind them.

By the time they reached the surface, the local researchers were waiting.

Director Kang joined through a secure communication channel.

Yerin gave the report while Subin explained the ecosystem and the Mana Marsh Devourer.

When he finished, Director Kang remained silent for several seconds.

"So your recommendation is to leave the dungeon intact."

"Yes."

"What if it becomes dangerous?"

"Then we deal with it."

Director Kang nodded.

"Understood."

The expedition had lasted less than three hours.

There had been only one serious battle.

They had not reached the deepest region.

They had not collected valuable treasures.

Yet the mission had accomplished exactly what it was supposed to do.

It had shown that the dungeon was evolving rapidly, but not necessarily toward greater hostility.

That evening, the team gathered outside the command center.

Min-seok stretched his arms.

"Three hours for one battle."

Ara smiled.

"You're disappointed."

"A little."

Yerin looked at him.

"You'll survive."

Jae-hyun glanced toward Subin.

"You handled that monster differently."

Subin looked at him.

"How?"

"You could have killed it immediately."

"I didn't need to."

Jae-hyun nodded.

"I understand."

The others gradually dispersed.

Yerin remained beside Subin.

"Another strange dungeon."

"Yes."

"Do you think they'll all become like this?"

Subin looked toward the distant mountains.

"I don't know."

She smiled.

"For once, you admitted it quickly."

Subin looked at her.

"I'm learning."

Yerin laughed softly.

The world was changing in ways no one completely understood.

New dungeons appeared.

Mana reshaped environments.

Monsters evolved.

Humans awakened new abilities.

And somewhere between all of those changes, Subin's own path continued forward.

Not through endless battles.

Not through conquering every dungeon.

But through understanding the world that had suddenly become much larger than the one he had known before.
