Chapter 114 — The Final Exchange

The distance between them disappeared.

Han Yerin accelerated first.

Her spear extended in a straight thrust, simple and direct, but Subin immediately recognized that simplicity was intentional. There was no unnecessary movement in her shoulders, no exaggerated preparation, and no attempt to disguise the attack.

She wanted him to see it.

Subin stepped to the side.

The spear passed his chest.

He rotated Simple Edge and aimed for the shaft.

Yerin withdrew it before the blade could make contact.

She pivoted and attacked again.

This time from the opposite side.

Subin blocked.

The weapons collided with a sharp metallic sound.

Neither retreated.

Yerin twisted the spear.

Subin released pressure.

The spear slipped past his blade.

He stepped inward.

Yerin immediately shortened her grip.

The spear's shaft struck his forearm.

The barrier flashed.

Subin didn't retreat.

He moved closer.

Yerin's eyes widened.

At this distance, her spear had become difficult to maneuver.

She released one hand, rotated the weapon around her body, and struck with the opposite end.

Subin ducked.

His sword moved toward her shoulder.

Yerin leaned backward.

The blade passed by a few centimeters.

She kicked against the floor and created distance.

Both fighters separated.

The audience erupted.

Yerin took a deep breath.

Subin looked at her.

Neither had gained a decisive advantage.

Yet the match had already lasted longer than most spectators expected.

The commentators were struggling to explain what they were seeing.

“This is completely different from the earlier rounds.”

“Neither fighter is trying to overpower the other.”

“They're removing options.”

Subin heard none of it.

His entire attention was on Yerin.

She was doing the same.

Then Yerin smiled.

“You're finally looking at me.”

“I've been looking at you the whole time.”

“No.”

She raised her spear.

“Before, you were looking for the answer.”

Subin's eyes narrowed.

“And now?”

“Now you're fighting.”

Subin smiled.

“You're right.”

Yerin charged.

The next exchange was faster.

Much faster.

Her spear thrust three times.

Subin deflected the first.

Avoided the second.

Blocked the third.

He countered.

Yerin rotated.

His sword passed beneath her arm.

She struck.

Subin stepped back.

The spear grazed his chest.

The barrier flashed.

He immediately moved forward again.

Yerin retreated.

Subin followed.

She changed direction.

He changed with her.

She attempted to create distance.

He refused to give it.

For several seconds, neither fighter seemed willing to surrender control.

Then Yerin made a mistake.

Her rear foot landed slightly outside the ideal position.

It was barely noticeable.

Subin saw it.

His body reacted instinctively.

Simple Edge moved.

Yerin's eyes sharpened.

She knew he had found the opening.

But she didn't retreat.

Instead, she stepped forward.

Their weapons crossed.

Subin's sword stopped against her shoulder.

Her spear stopped against his chest.

Both barriers activated.

The referee raised his hand.

“No decisive strike!”

The crowd erupted.

Subin and Yerin separated.

Yerin looked at him.

“You saw it.”

“Yes.”

“And you still attacked.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you wanted me to.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

Subin understood.

The mistake had been deliberate.

Yerin had created an opening because she knew Subin would recognize it.

She had then used his decision to enter the position she wanted.

But Subin had recognized that too.

The fight was no longer about hiding intentions.

It was about deciding whether to act even after understanding them.

Yerin raised her spear.

“Again.”

Subin nodded.

They moved.

The next several exchanges were almost impossible to follow.

Yerin attacked from multiple angles.

Subin's sword moved continuously.

Neither fighter relied on a single technique.

The spear changed length, angle, grip, and rhythm.

The sword changed direction, timing, and distance.

Subin wasn't using any new sword technique.

Yerin wasn't revealing a secret ability.

They were simply using everything they had learned.

Then Subin felt something.

His sword became warm.

He glanced at Simple Edge.

A faint golden line appeared again.

[Simple Edge awakening progress detected.]

[Compatibility: 99.99%]

[Condition approaching completion.]

Subin ignored it.

Yerin attacked.

The spear came straight toward him.

Subin moved.

Their weapons crossed.

Yerin stepped inside.

Her shoulder struck his chest.

The barrier flashed.

Subin's sword stopped at her neck.

The referee raised his hand.

“Point to neither side!”

The audience was now completely absorbed.

Yerin stepped back.

Her breathing was heavier.

Subin's breathing had finally changed as well.

They had been fighting for nearly fifteen minutes.

The arena system announced:

Five minutes remaining.

Yerin lowered her spear slightly.

“Subin.”

“Yes?”

“If we continue like this, we'll reach the time limit.”

“I know.”

“Do you want to?”

“No.”

Yerin smiled.

“Neither do I.”

She raised her spear.

“Then one final exchange.”

Subin understood.

They would finish it.

No more testing.

No more cautious exchanges.

No more trying to understand each other through dozens of movements.

One final exchange.

The arena became silent.

Yerin shifted her stance.

Subin lowered Simple Edge.

Both waited.

Then Yerin moved.

Her entire body accelerated.

The spear became a straight line.

Subin stepped forward.

The spear changed direction.

He followed.

Yerin shortened her grip.

Subin turned his wrist.

The weapons collided.

Yerin rotated.

Subin moved around the spear.

She released one hand.

The weapon reversed.

Subin ducked.

Yerin's knee rose.

He blocked.

The spear returned.

Subin stepped inward.

They were now almost chest to chest.

Yerin's eyes met his.

She knew.

He knew.

There was no longer any uncertainty.

Yerin's spear moved toward his shoulder.

Subin's sword moved toward her chest.

Both committed.

For a fraction of a second, neither changed direction.

Then Subin changed his grip.

Simple Edge turned.

Instead of striking Yerin's chest, the blade passed beneath her spear and touched the shaft.

Yerin's spear continued forward.

Subin's sword followed the weapon's movement.

The blade slid along the shaft.

He stepped past her.

Yerin realized what was happening.

She released the spear.

The weapon dropped.

She immediately turned and reached for Subin.

But Simple Edge had already stopped.

The blade rested against her throat.

The barrier activated.

At the same moment, Yerin's empty hand touched Subin's chest.

Her barrier activated as well.

The referee stared at the readings.

The entire arena waited.

Then the system made its decision.

Winner: Subin Vans.

Silence.

Then the stadium erupted.

Subin lowered his sword.

Yerin stood completely still.

For a moment, she looked disappointed.

Then she smiled.

“I lost.”

Subin nodded.

“Barely.”

“Don't say that.”

“Why?”

“Because I really lost.”

She picked up her spear.

Then she looked at him.

“But I'm happy.”

Subin looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because you didn't beat me because your sword was stronger.”

She smiled.

“You understood me.”

Subin nodded.

“You understood me too.”

Yerin extended her hand.

“Congratulations.”

He shook it.

“Congratulations to you too.”

The referee announced the final result again.

National A-Rank Evaluation Champion — Subin Vans.

The arena erupted once more.

Subin looked around.

Thousands of people were cheering.

Cameras were pointed toward him.

Association officials were already moving toward the arena.

But none of that mattered as much as the person standing in front of him.

Yerin looked at him.

“Dinner?”

Subin smiled.

“Of course.”

---

Later that evening, the Association officially announced the updated national rankings.

The evaluation results had produced several changes.

Subin had moved dramatically upward.

Yerin remained among the country's highest-ranked A-rankers.

Min-seok and Jae-hyun also retained their positions near the top.

The exact ranking mattered less to Subin than the battles that had produced it.

He had entered the evaluation expecting to measure his sword against other A-rankers.

Instead, he had learned something far more valuable.

Humans weren't predictable systems.

They changed because of experience.

They changed because of emotion.

They changed because of defeat.

And sometimes they changed because someone else believed they could become stronger.

Subin looked at Simple Edge.

The faint golden line appeared again.

This time, it remained for several seconds.

[Simple Edge awakening condition: 99.99%]

[Condition: Understanding achieved.]

Subin's eyes narrowed.

A second notification appeared.

[Final requirement: Choice.]

He stared at the message.

Then it disappeared.

Simple Edge returned to normal.

The sword still hadn't awakened.

But Subin understood why.

The sword wasn't waiting for another battle.

It was waiting for a choice he hadn't yet made.

He placed it back into its sheath.

Outside the training room, Yerin was waiting.

“You've been staring at that sword for ten minutes.”

“I was thinking.”

“About tomorrow?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Then what?”

Subin smiled.

“The sword.”

She laughed.

“Of course.”

They walked together through the quiet Association corridor.

Tomorrow, the tournament would be over.

There would be guild offers, Association assignments, media attention, new dungeons, new Awakeners, and perhaps new conflicts.

Subin's life wasn't becoming simpler.

It was becoming larger.

And somewhere beyond Earth, the mana density continued to rise.

The world's dungeons continued evolving.

More Awakeners would appear.

More powerful monsters would emerge.

Humanity was only beginning to understand what the awakening era would become.

But tonight, Subin wasn't thinking about any of that.

He had won.

Not because he had crushed his opponent.

Not because his sword had become overwhelmingly stronger.

He had won because he had fought someone who understood him—and still found a way forward.

That was enough.

For now.
