Chapter 109 — The Second Test

The first round of the National A-Rank Evaluation ended that afternoon.

The arena remained crowded even after the final match, with spectators discussing the performances they had just witnessed. Subin's victory over Lee Jae-hyun had become the main topic of conversation, but the other matches had also changed the public perception of the competitors.

Han Yerin's victory over Seo Hyun-woo had established her as more than a spear specialist. She had demonstrated that she could overcome an opponent whose defensive ability had frustrated nearly every A-rank team in the country.

Kang Min-seok had shown that his recent improvements were real.

Choi Ara had lost, but her performance against Min-seok had attracted considerable attention.

And Lee Jae-hyun had suffered his first publicly recorded defeat against Subin.

For Subin himself, however, the result felt strangely ordinary.

He was sitting in the Association's athlete lounge with a bottle of water in his hand when Min-seok dropped into the chair beside him.

“You're too calm.”

Subin looked at him.

“Should I be excited?”

“You just beat Jae-hyun in front of the entire country.”

“I know.”

“And you're sitting here drinking water.”

“I'm thirsty.”

Min-seok stared at him for several seconds.

“You really are impossible.”

Ara sat across from them, scrolling through the evaluation results on her tablet.

“Actually, he's doing the right thing.”

Min-seok looked at her.

“How?”

“The tournament isn't finished.”

She turned the screen toward them.

“The Association released the second-round structure.”

Subin looked at the screen.

The remaining participants were divided into two groups.

Group A: Han Yerin, Kang Min-seok, Choi Ara, Seo Hyun-woo.

Group B: Subin Vans, Lee Jae-hyun, Park Jae-hyun, and one additional A-rank Awakener.

Min-seok frowned.

“Why are we separated?”

Ara shrugged.

“To prevent immediate rematches.”

Subin looked at the schedule.

“Who's the fourth participant?”

The answer came from behind them.

“Me.”

Subin turned.

A tall woman stood at the entrance.

She had short black hair and wore a simple combat uniform without any guild emblem.

Subin didn't recognize her.

Min-seok immediately stood.

“Seriously?”

Ara looked surprised.

“Ji Soo-ah.”

The woman smiled.

“You remember me.”

“Everyone remembers you.”

Subin looked between them.

“Who is she?”

Min-seok stared at him.

“You don't know?”

“No.”

Soo-ah laughed.

“That's refreshing.”

She walked closer.

“I'm Ji Soo-ah. A-rank martial artist. No guild affiliation.”

Subin nodded.

“Nice to meet you.”

She studied him.

“You're exactly as people described.”

“How?”

“Quiet.”

Min-seok laughed.

“She'll get used to it.”

Soo-ah looked at Subin's sword.

“Simple Edge?”

“Yes.”

“Interesting name.”

“It didn't have one.”

“You named it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Subin thought for a moment.

“Because it's simple.”

Soo-ah smiled.

“I like that.”

Yerin entered the lounge a moment later.

She looked at the group.

“What are you discussing?”

Ara showed her the second-round schedule.

Yerin read it carefully.

“So Subin gets Soo-ah.”

“Yes,” Ara said.

Yerin looked toward Soo-ah.

“She's dangerous.”

Soo-ah smiled.

“That's probably the nicest introduction I've received today.”

Yerin ignored the joke.

“She doesn't fight like most A-rankers.”

Subin looked at Soo-ah.

“What do you mean?”

Soo-ah answered herself.

“I don't use a weapon.”

She raised one hand.

“My class specializes in close-range body reinforcement.”

Subin's eyes sharpened slightly.

“Then this will be useful.”

Yerin sighed.

“You really do think every fight is useful.”

“It is.”

Soo-ah smiled.

“I'm beginning to understand why people like watching you.”

Before anyone could continue, an Association official entered.

“Second-round participants, the evaluation format has changed.”

Everyone became attentive.

“The first round tested individual combat. The second round will test adaptability.”

The official activated the display.

A diagram of a large combat arena appeared.

“The arena will change during the battle. Terrain, gravity, visibility, and mana flow will be modified at random intervals.”

Min-seok frowned.

“So we're fighting the arena too?”

“Essentially.”

Ara nodded.

“That makes sense.”

The official continued.

“Each match will last a maximum of twenty minutes. Victory can be achieved by incapacitation or forcing the opponent outside the designated combat zone.”

Subin studied the arena diagram.

“That changes the priority.”

The official looked at him.

“How?”

“The environment becomes another participant.”

The official smiled.

“Exactly.”

The announcement ended.

Yerin looked at Subin.

“Don't overthink it.”

“I won't.”

She hesitated.

Then she said quietly, “And don't get injured.”

Subin looked at her.

“I won't.”

Yerin smiled.

“Good.”

She left with Ara.

Soo-ah watched her leave.

Then she looked at Subin.

“You two are close.”

Subin nodded.

“Yes.”

“Very close?”

Subin considered the question.

“Yes.”

Soo-ah smiled knowingly.

“I see.”

Subin didn't understand the expression.

Min-seok covered his face.

“Don't ask.”

“Why?”

“Because he'll give you a completely honest answer.”

Soo-ah laughed.

The next morning, the second round began.

The first match was between Han Yerin and Kang Min-seok.

Subin watched from the observation area.

The arena transformed as soon as the fight began.

The flat floor became a field of tall stone pillars.

Min-seok attacked first.

Yerin moved between the pillars, using the terrain to control his approach.

Their fight was close.

Min-seok had improved his ability to change direction, while Yerin had become more aggressive after her battle with Hyun-woo.

Neither gained a decisive advantage.

Then the arena changed.

The stone pillars disappeared.

The floor became inclined.

Mana density increased.

Yerin immediately adjusted her stance.

Min-seok attacked.

His footing slipped slightly.

Yerin used the opportunity.

Her spear struck his shoulder.

The barrier activated.

“Winner: Han Yerin!”

Min-seok laughed as he left the arena.

“You're getting stronger.”

Yerin smiled.

“So are you.”

Subin watched carefully.

He wasn't simply observing their techniques.

He was watching their decision-making.

Yerin had anticipated the terrain change faster.

That small difference had decided the battle.

The second match was Choi Ara versus Seo Hyun-woo.

Ara fought brilliantly.

She refused to engage directly, constantly changing magical ranges and using the changing environment.

But Hyun-woo's defense remained extraordinary.

When the arena became narrow, Ara lost her biggest advantage.

Hyun-woo advanced.

She tried to retreat.

There was nowhere left.

His shield stopped just before her chest.

“Winner: Seo Hyun-woo.”

Ara wasn't disappointed.

When she returned, Subin offered her a bottle of water.

She accepted it.

“You saw that?”

“Yes.”

“What did I do wrong?”

“You waited too long after the arena narrowed.”

She sighed.

“I knew you were going to say that.”

“You asked.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“That's why I asked you.”

The final match of the second round was announced.

Subin Vans vs Ji Soo-ah

The arena filled again.

Soo-ah entered first.

Subin followed.

The barrier activated.

The announcer spoke.

“Both participants are A-rank Awakeners. The arena will undergo environmental changes during combat.”

Soo-ah raised her fists.

“You ready?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

The signal sounded.

Soo-ah vanished forward.

Subin barely raised Simple Edge in time.

Her fist struck the flat of the blade.

The impact forced him backward.

His eyes narrowed.

She was fast.

Not as fast as the highest-level monsters he had fought, but her acceleration was exceptional for a human.

More importantly, her body movement was extremely efficient.

She attacked again.

Subin stepped aside.

Her fist passed his face.

He attempted a counter.

She twisted her waist and avoided the blade.

Then she kicked.

Subin blocked with his forearm and moved back.

Soo-ah smiled.

“You're different up close.”

“So are you.”

She attacked again.

The battle became a close-range exchange.

Subin's sword gave him reach, but Soo-ah constantly entered the dangerous distance where his blade was difficult to use.

She wasn't reckless.

Every movement had a purpose.

Subin gradually understood her style.

She didn't fight by reading the sword.

She fought by reading the swordsman.

That made her difficult to predict.

The arena suddenly changed.

The floor dropped.

A section of the battlefield became a lower platform.

Soo-ah landed safely.

Subin used the slope to move upward.

She followed immediately.

Her fist struck.

Subin blocked.

The impact sent him sideways.

He landed near the edge.

The audience reacted.

Soo-ah didn't give him time.

She rushed forward.

Subin looked at the floor.

Then at her feet.

Then at the angle of her shoulders.

He understood.

She wasn't attacking him directly.

She was forcing him toward the boundary.

Subin smiled.

Soo-ah noticed.

“What?”

“You've been doing that from the beginning.”

“Doing what?”

“Controlling where I move.”

Her expression became serious.

“So you finally noticed.”

“Yes.”

The arena changed again.

The floor suddenly became completely flat.

The slope disappeared.

Soo-ah's planned movement lost its advantage.

Subin stepped forward.

Their positions reversed.

Now Soo-ah was near the boundary.

She immediately changed direction.

Subin followed.

His sword didn't target her body.

It targeted the space she needed to occupy.

Soo-ah stopped.

She couldn't advance without entering the sword's range.

She couldn't retreat without reaching the boundary.

For the first time, she was trapped.

But she smiled.

“Nice.”

She lowered her stance.

Then she rushed directly toward him.

Subin's sword moved.

Soo-ah entered the blade's range anyway.

The barrier flashed as the edge touched her shoulder.

At the same instant, her fist stopped against Subin's chest.

Both attacks had landed.

The system paused.

The referee examined the readings.

The crowd became silent.

Then the result appeared.

Winner: Subin Vans

Soo-ah stepped back.

“You got me.”

Subin lowered Simple Edge.

“Barely.”

She laughed.

“Don't be polite. You won.”

“I mean it.”

Soo-ah looked at him seriously.

“You adapted faster than I expected.”

“You forced me to.”

“Then I'm glad.”

They shook hands.

As they left the arena, Jae-hyun was waiting.

He looked at Subin.

“You're improving.”

“So are you.”

“I watched your match.”

Subin nodded.

“What did you see?”

Jae-hyun answered immediately.

“You're becoming better at fighting humans.”

Subin smiled faintly.

“That was the point.”

Jae-hyun looked toward the arena.

“Then our next fight will be different.”

Subin met his eyes.

“I hope so.”

Jae-hyun walked away.

Yerin approached.

“You won.”

“Yes.”

“You almost lost.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him carefully.

“Are you happy?”

Subin nodded.

“Very.”

“Why?”

“Because I learned something.”

Yerin smiled.

“You really are hopeless.”

She paused.

Then quietly added, “But I'm glad you're enjoying yourself.”

Subin looked at her.

For a moment, neither said anything.

Then Min-seok shouted from across the corridor.

“Are you two coming or planning to stand there all day?”

Yerin's face turned slightly red.

Subin looked toward Min-seok.

“We're coming.”

Min-seok grinned.

Ara joined them.

“Congratulations, Subin.”

“Thanks.”

She looked at him.

“Your next opponent is Jae-hyun.”

“Yes.”

“That's going to be much harder than today.”

Subin nodded.

“I know.”

The system notification appeared quietly.

[A-Rank Human Combatant defeated.]

[Adaptive Combat Understanding increased.]

[Decision Transition: 44% → 47%]

[Decision Space: 51% → 55%]

[Adaptive Decision Loop: 53% → 57%]

[Sword Intent: 98.1% → 98.3%]

[Personal Sword Path: 99.9%]

Subin dismissed the notification.

No dramatic evolution occurred.

No new technique appeared.

But his understanding had deepened again.

He had learned from Soo-ah that a fighter didn't always need to predict the sword.

Sometimes they could attack the person holding it.

And that lesson would matter.

Because the next opponent waiting for him had already studied his swordsmanship carefully.

Lee Jae-hyun wasn't going to fight the same Subin he had faced in the first round.

And Subin wasn't going to fight the same Jae-hyun either.
