Chapter 34: 34 - The Underground Arena

The trap-filled corridor in the dark space that looked like it was underground looked dangerous no matter how you looked at it, but King leisurely walked through it with the mindset of someone going on a sightseeing trip.

The traps had all been activated anyway, so there was no need to pay much attention to them. Even if they had not been activated, they still would not be able to hurt King.

"Hey, why are all these people using melee weapons? Shouldn’t the people coming here be mages looking for good wands?"

The more King looked, the more confused he became. A bunch of people using swords and spears and desperately trying to get the wand here, were they looking to die?

"From what I can guess, there are probably only a few mages or a mage leading the group. You should know that high-level wands can actively choose their master, right? Since the way a wand chooses is to pick one of the mages closest to it in front of it, no one wants to enter the dungeon with too many mages."

It sounded reasonable, but King felt there was a very big flaw in Elias’s words.

"Does it really matter who gets recognized by the wand? Just kill that person, and you can use the wand. Why not do something that simple and instead choose to drag a bunch of people who aren’t mages into this place to die?"

Killing some mage was clearly much more reasonable than getting dozens of people killed like this, even if neither action could be considered good.

"If it were that simple, there would be no need to bring a crowd like this into the dungeon. Once a wand actively recognizes its master, then even if its master dies, no one else can use a wand of that level. It will become a useless wand forever."

"Tsk, this really is a good place to waste lives for nothing."

After hearing Elias’s clear explanation, King shook his head and clicked his tongue. Did this world create dungeons to ’solve’ the problem of overpopulation?

This corridor seemed to be a little too long. They had been walking slowly for more than ten minutes now, yet the two students still had not made it outside.

As they went farther, the number of traps kept getting smaller until the bricks beneath their feet were no longer switches that activated traps.

"Damn, how could anyone design such a boring dungeon? We’ve walked at least a few kilometers by now."

King angrily kicked a small stone toward the wall. He used a little too much force, so the ancient wall immediately collapsed when the stone hit it, revealing a large empty space.

"Great! A secret passage."

A second ago, King was pouting in boredom, but the next second, the corners of his mouth curled up. The extremely faint light coming from the empty space made him certain that there must be something very interesting down there.

Without waiting for Elias, King immediately looked down to see what was below. The moment he poked his head out to look, his eyes immediately widened.

Deep beneath the ground was a massive arena that looked like an ancient Roman Colosseum that had been buried for thousands of years.

Tall, dark black stone walls, covered in cracks and damp moss, surrounded enormous spectator stands that were breathtakingly vast.

Hundreds of torches sparsely hung on the stone pillars, producing just enough light to strain the eyes and see the path, making King feel as if rows of empty seats appeared and disappeared in the darkness with the movement of the flames.

Trying to look more carefully, everything immediately became clear. After all, his eyesight was now ridiculously powerful.

At the center was a wide ancient stone arena, now lying in ruins as if it had just gone through a terrible battle.

The floor was covered with many enormous holes, some so deep that their bottoms could not be seen, with broken pieces of stone and long claw marks scattered around them.

Huge claw marks had cracked the large stone slabs from the center of the arena all the way to the spectator stands, as if some gigantic creature had once descended and rampaged through everything.

"Damn! The Colosseum? This place looks pretty good."

With one glance, King immediately realized that this place had to be about eighty percent similar to that cultural heritage site that had been chosen as one of the seven wonders of the world.

There had to be some gigantic monster in a place like this. King felt that this might be the first time he could actually have a serious fight instead of just showing off or getting beaten one-sidedly.

King said more strange things again, making Elias frown. He had never heard of what the Colosseum was, but judging from King’s expression, it had to be something extremely impressive.

Getting closer to see if this was the final destination of the dungeon, Elias was surprised because... It was too dark!

"What a shame, I can’t see anything. My eyes did get better after breaking through, but it seems they’re still too weak."

He could not see the ’scenery’ in front of him. Elias shook his head with some regret. He had been nearsighted for many years, so this feeling of not being able to see anything clearly was already very familiar to him, and he did not feel too uncomfortable.

It was normal that he could not see because jumping from here to the floor below head first was at least three hundred meters. The space was too large and too dark, so Elias’s eyes were temporarily not enough. At the very least, he would need to be a rank II mage to barely see clearly.

King did not care whether Elias could see or not and only focused on the traces left behind by a battle from a very long time ago.

After looking around for a while, King’s eyes locked onto a large section of the wall where a rather big dent had been left from someone crashing into it with great force.

Right beneath the wall was a shattered skeleton and several torn pieces of a mage’s clothing.

The skeleton’s hand was still holding a wand that had not broken. Withstanding such a powerful attack without being completely damaged, it had to be a rather high-quality wand.

"Hey, I see a mage. There’s only one person, and his wand can still be used."

King pointed in one direction, and Elias narrowed his eyes as he looked over. He remembered the direction, but Elias really could not see clearly.

"How do we get down?"

Even though he could not see clearly, Elias could still roughly calculate the distance from here. With his body still not fully recovered, jumping down from here would really leave Elias seriously injured.

"What is so difficult about this? I’ll take you down."

King’s hand immediately grabbed Elias by the collar and pulled him down with him without needing his consent. Right at that moment, the heavy sound of chains scraping against each other rang out...
