Superior Physician
Chapter 94: Major Extracorporeal Bypass
Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Major Extracorporeal Bypass
A little after three in the afternoon, in the Vice President’s office at Ning’an Hospital.
Gu Qingran was engrossed in his work when the sound of the door banging open shattered his concentration.
He looked up, annoyed, only to see that little rascal Gu Qingning barge in like she owned the place.
Gu Qingran’s expression shifted to one of resignation. "Qingning," he said, exasperated, "it’s Saturday. Shouldn’t you be out having fun with your friends? What on earth brings you here?"
Grinning, Gu Qingning walked up to the desk and, with a nimble hop, skillfully perched herself on top of it.
"Bro, that guy Yu Zhiming is at the most critical moment. Heaven or hell—we’ll find out soon."
Gu Qingning asked, her tone laced with confusion, "Since you think so highly of him, why haven’t I seen you lift a finger to help?"
Gu Qingran chuckled and retorted, "And how do you think I should help him?"
Gu Qingning huffed indignantly. "Those two women framed him. It’s all about money, nothing more."
"You should just throw a ton of money at them until they tell the truth and finger the mastermind."
Her eyes darted around for a moment. "Or you could just find some tough-looking tattooed guys to threaten them a little."
Gu Qingran shook his head with a faint smile. "Whether we bribe them or threaten them into recanting, do you think the netizens, the police, and the judge will suddenly believe them?"
"Besides, the person behind this is extremely careful. They wouldn’t have overlooked that possibility."
"Doing that might be playing right into their hands."
Gu Qingran smiled. "I trust Yu Zhiming’s judgment. If he says that woman has a problem with her breast, then she has a problem."
"Since that’s the case, why should I waste my money?"
"It’s not like my money grows on trees."
"As for the mastermind..."
Gu Qingran gave a slight smile. "We can investigate that slowly after Yu Zhiming gets out of this mess."
"Qingning, you need to have a little patience in everything you do. You can’t eat hot tofu if you’re impatient; you’ll just end up burning your mouth."
Gu Qingning snorted softly and asked, "Bro, aren’t you worried at all that Yu Zhiming might be wrong?"
"What if he’s just unlucky?"
Gu Qingran said casually, "It’s no big deal. Even if he can’t openly practice medicine anymore, no one can take his medical skills away from him."
"I can still invite him to work at our Ning’an. He’d just have to save people in a different capacity."
Gu Qingning blinked, then huffed, "I finally get it."
"So the reason you’re not doing anything is that you’re hoping he’ll fail so you can scoop him up for cheap."
"Gu Qingran, I can’t believe you’re this kind of person."
"The glorious, towering image I had of you in my mind just shattered like a mirror. CRASH!"
"I don’t even want to talk to you anymore! Hmph!"
Gu Qingran couldn’t help but chuckle. "I was just talking about the worst-case scenario. The main thing is that I have enough confidence in that kid, Yu Zhiming."
"Hey, Qingning, you were just gnashing your teeth the other day, saying you wanted to beat Yu Zhiming half to death. How come you’ve completely flipped and are suddenly defending him?"
"After just three short days at his place, has your little maiden’s heart finally started to flutter?"
"Pfft, no way!"
Gu Qingning’s voice rose a notch. "If I get a chance to catch him, I’ll still beat him half to death."
"But, to be fair, I think he was framed, and we should do what we can to help him through this."
Gu Qingran gave a meaningful smile, which earned him another look of disgust from Gu Qingning.
"Bro, you have no idea. Yesterday, that guy—a grown man, six-foot-one—was leaning on his big sister’s shoulder, sobbing his eyes out."
"I’m not kidding, Bro. He was really crying. I saw it and heard it with my own eyes and ears."
Gu Qingning shook her head. "Tsk, tsk. The scene was just unbearable to watch. I felt embarrassed just being there."
"He’s not a five or six-year-old kid. Honestly."
Gu Qingran noticed that although the girl wore a look of disgust, her words betrayed a great deal of concern.
"Qingning, try to put yourself in his shoes. He’s thousands of miles from home in an unfamiliar place. Then he’s suddenly framed and faces the risk of prison. When he finally sees family, it’s only natural for his emotions to get the better of him."
After defending Yu Zhiming a bit, Gu Qingran asked with a smile, "Qingning, why didn’t you record the scene on your phone? You could use it to make fun of him later."
Gu Qingning’s expression immediately soured.
"Bro, that’s one of my biggest regrets."
"At the time, I was so busy being shocked and embarrassed that I completely forgot to record it to get my revenge."
"Bro, you have no idea. I regretted it so much afterward that I nearly pinched my own thigh black and blue."
After a short pause, Gu Qingning continued excitedly, "Bro, did you know?"
"That guy’s feelings for his big sister are really special, almost like the bond between a son and his mother."
"Apparently, when he was seriously injured as a kid, he almost died. It was his sister who saved him with her breast milk..."
Gu Qingran listened patiently as his sister excitedly recounted stories about Yu Zhiming...
At that very moment, at Huashan Hospital, Yu Zhiming once again had to interrupt his physical exam work and rush to an ICU in the general surgery department.
On the bed in the intensive care unit lay an elderly man in a coma, so thin he was almost unrecognizable. Three drainage tubes and four data monitoring lines were connected to his body.
Yu Zhiming had already been briefed: the patient was a sixty-two-year-old man with terminal liver cancer that had metastasized.
Now, a blood vessel in his brain had become blocked, causing him to fall into a coma due to ischemia in part of his brain tissue.
Given the patient’s current physical condition, thrombolytic therapy would only hasten his death.
Other treatment methods were also out of the question; he couldn’t even withstand being moved too vigorously.
His body was simply too frail. He was counting his final hours, stepping closer and closer to death.
The reason Teacher Qi had urgently summoned Yu Zhiming stemmed from a bold and risky idea he had.
An extracorporeal bypass.
The procedure involved drawing arterial blood from the patient’s arm and, using a puncture needle, piercing directly into the brain, bypassing the blockage in the cerebral artery to connect directly to the artery beyond it.
This method would maintain the supply of fresh blood to that part of the brain, allowing the patient to regain consciousness and fulfill his last wish.
The patient’s wish was to see his son one last time.
His son was a peacekeeping officer who was on his way back and expected to arrive in Binhai tonight.
This extracorporeal bypass procedure conceived by Qi Yue was extremely risky and would cause significant damage to the brain.
However, given the patient’s current situation, it was a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils. The relative damage to the body would be smaller, and there was a decent chance the patient could survive it.
As for the resulting brain damage—whether he would be paralyzed or lose certain sensory functions—that was no longer important. The goal was to wake him up.
He wouldn’t last much longer anyway.
Yu Zhiming placed his hand lightly on the patient’s head...
The next moment, his consciousness seemed to split into a dozen strands, traveling with the bloodstream through winding, cave-like tunnels...
After a short while, one of his thought-strands reached an extremely narrow passage, its rush slowing to a crawl...
After a brief, difficult crawl, the way forward suddenly opened up again...
Yu Zhiming drew a simple diagram showing the exact location of the blockage and handed it to Teacher Qi.
Qi Yue studied the diagram, and after a moment’s thought, he determined a path for the puncture...
Next, Yu Zhiming watched as Teacher Qi personally made an incision in the scalp over the patient’s left forehead, then used a bone drill to create a small hole.
Then, Yu Zhiming took a puncture needle and, with meticulous care and a rock-steady hand, inserted it...
Once Yu Zhiming saw the bright red blood flow from the patient’s left arm, through the tube, past the puncture needle, and successfully into his brain, he left the ICU...
Yu Zhiming was still about a hundred meters away from the five-story research center building when he saw Zhou Mo bounding toward him like a nimble fawn.
"The results are in..."
"Dr. Yu, the results are in! Breast cancer! You’re in the clear! You’re really in the clear..."
