Superior Physician
Chapter 84: Another Notice
Chapter 84: Chapter 84: Another Notice
Qi Yue was also aware of Yu Zhiming’s knowledge base. As brilliant as he was, his formal education was still just from a third-rate medical school.
During his years at the county hospital, he had likely never been involved in any kind of craniotomy.
This procedure, puncturing a cerebral blood vessel, was truly asking a lot of him.
But the situation was urgent, so they had no choice but to push him into it. Qi Yue didn’t know the precise location of the air embolism, so he couldn’t perform the procedure for Yu Zhiming.
"Zhiming, the location of the air embolism in his brain—tell me... no, draw it."
"I’ll map out the puncture path!"
Before Qi Yue’s voice had even faded, Yu Zhiming had already pulled a small notebook and a pen from his white lab coat pocket and started drawing with swift strokes.
Thanks to his years of studying human anatomy, his constant practice, and his extreme familiarity with sketching diagrams, Yu Zhiming used only a few strokes to concisely illustrate the location of the air embolism in the cerebral vessel.
As a medical authority, Qi Yue’s own familiarity with human anatomy and his spatial visualization skills were also exceptional.
Moreover, his specialty was neurology, so his knowledge of the brain was incredibly precise.
After looking at Yu Zhiming’s diagram and pondering for a moment, he moved to the left side of Luo Yang’s head. He extended his index finger and gestured at a spot just below the base of Luo Yang’s left ear.
"Zhiming, insert the needle from this position, at this angle. Do you understand?"
Yu Zhiming nodded.
Qi Yue noticed that Yu Zhiming was still hesitating, so he added, "By my calculations, in another minute or so, that section of brain tissue will suffer irreversible damage from the prolonged lack of oxygen."
"At that point, the best-case scenario for this guy is hemiplegia. The worst-case is a vegetative state. I’m sure that’s not the outcome he was hoping for."
At this, Qi Yue’s tone sharpened abruptly.
"Zhiming, there’s no more time to waste. Get it done."
Yu Zhiming was not an indecisive person. Having made his decision, he adopted a do-or-die mentality and thrust the needle in forcefully...
The few doctors in white coats who were watching couldn’t help but feel their hearts clench. Some couldn’t bear to look.
When they opened their eyes again, they saw that the thin, twenty-some-centimeter-long puncture needle was already halfway embedded in the spot below the base of Luo Yang’s left ear.
The swift, forceful puncture sent a chill down each of their spines, making their blood run cold.
The next moment, they saw a thread of blood spurt from the hollow puncture needle...
"What are you all gawking at? Get him out of here for further treatment, now!"
Qi Yue’s sharp rebuke snapped the onlookers out of their stupor.
They finally realized Luo Yang wasn’t out of the woods yet; the crisis was far from over.
Without a word to Qi Yue or Yu Zhiming, the group pushed the gurney and rushed toward the cardiopulmonary building...
Yu Zhiming suddenly thought of a question. "Teacher," he asked, "will that guy have any side effects from that puncture?"
Qi Yue replied nonchalantly, "Nothing major. Just a significant loss of hearing in his left ear, possibly even deafness, plus at least six months of headaches."
"Compared to the alternatives, that’s getting off easy."
Qi Yue said this with a relaxed and carefree expression, unknowingly unnerving Yu Zhiming.
’One puncture, and it basically ruins the hearing in his left ear.’
’For brain issues like this, unless it’s an absolute emergency, it’s best to avoid this kind of procedure in the future if at all possible...’
After what felt like a heart-stopping ordeal, Yu Zhiming ambled back to the main office.
To his surprise, a woman with short hair was walking toward him, holding a silk banner with both hands, her face alight with excitement.
Embroidered on the banner in large, golden characters were two lines: "With a heart of compassion for his patients, his medical skills rival those of Bian Que."
Although the two lines didn’t rhyme, they praised the two most important qualities of a doctor: medical ethics and skill.
As the first silk banner he had received since starting at Huashan Hospital, Yu Zhiming was quite pleased.
However, Yu Zhiming only felt a vague sense of familiarity with the short-haired woman, who looked to be in her thirties; he couldn’t recall how they were connected.
’It would be awkward if this banner isn’t meant for me.’
Yu Zhiming didn’t take the banner, asking tentatively, "And you are? I meet a lot of people, and I’m a little bad with faces."
The short-haired woman chuckled. "Dr. Yu, it seems you don’t remember me."
"Let me give you a hint: over a month ago, the round stone bollard in front of the Youyou Grand Hotel."
At the mention of the stone bollard, and hearing her now-familiar voice, Yu Zhiming instantly recalled his encounter with her.
Menstrual pain versus an ectopic pregnancy!
"Oh, it’s you! What happened to your long hair?"
With a look of dawning recognition, Yu Zhiming accepted the banner with both hands, offered a sincere word of thanks, and then passed it to Zhou Mo, who had come to his side.
The short-haired woman beamed. "It’s me."
"After the surgery, I felt I needed to change things up, starting from the top."
"So I took the plunge and cut my hair short."
She chuckled. "It was just yesterday that I happened to see that widely discussed news report online. When I saw your picture, I finally learned who you really are."
At this, the woman straightened her posture and gave Yu Zhiming a deep bow.
"Dr. Yu, thank you!"
Straightening up, she said earnestly, "If it weren’t for your timely warning, I can’t imagine how much pain I would have gone through."
"I might have even lost my life."
"Dr. Yu, I really can’t thank you enough."
Yu Zhiming replied graciously, "I’m a doctor. It’s just part of my job. You don’t have to thank me so profusely."
They exchanged a few more words before the woman politely took her leave.
It was only after she left that Yu Zhiming realized he still didn’t even know her name.
It seemed she had forgotten to introduce herself, too.
"Zhou Mo, did she tell you her name while she was waiting for me?"
Zhou Mo thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No, she didn’t."
"She just told me that she’d been leaning over a stone bollard to ease her abdominal pain when you saw at a glance that she had an ectopic pregnancy and told her to come to our hospital for a check-up and treatment."
"Dr. Yu, what about the banner?"
Yu Zhiming noticed that neither this main office nor the director’s office next door had any thank-you banners from patients on display.
He took the banner back. "Let’s put it in a storage locker. It’s not like I need this to prove my medical skills anymore."
Zhou Mo grinned. "You’re the famous ’Human CT Scanner,’ the nemesis of early-stage cancers. What do you need a banner for as window dressing?"
Yu Zhiming adopted the air of a lofty expert and said with breezy nonchalance, "It is but a fleeting reputation."
"I haven’t fundamentally changed or improved from who I was a couple of days ago."
Amid Zhou Mo’s giggles, Yu Zhiming, feeling he had laid it on a bit thick, put the banner in a locker and quickly left the main office for the inpatient ward.
He needed to monitor and record the physical changes in the teenage boy with narcolepsy after he started his medication...
Around lunchtime, Yu Zhiming received definitive news: Luo Yang, the despondent young doctor, had regained consciousness.
Furthermore, his body showed no signs of paralysis.
This meant Yu Zhiming’s efforts had not been in vain. The rescue was a success; they had pulled a man back from the brink of death.
As evening approached and his shift was ending, Yu Zhiming was surprised to see a notice posted online by Jingda Medical School. It was an announcement regarding the investigation into his rejection from their graduate program’s final interviews.
The notice stated that the performance of the other two candidates in the final interviews that year had been exceptionally outstanding.
This resulted in Dr. Yu Zhiming’s weighted total score, combining both the preliminary exam and the final interview, falling behind the other two candidates by 0.25 and 1.2 points, respectively. He placed third, thereby losing his eligibility for admission.
After reviewing the files from that year and interviewing the relevant personnel, the medical school’s investigation team found no violations of rules or regulations during the entire interview and admissions process...
