Chapter 81: Chapter 81: The Sound of Fear

Around 4:00 PM, Yu Zhiming learned some information about the Ning’an Group from Teacher Qi, who had just returned from a consultation.

The Ning’an Group’s strengths were in pharmaceuticals and everyday medical supplies, but they were considerably weak in the field of medical device manufacturing.

Qi Yue mentioned that the small device, which they were tentatively calling a Waking Device, required a fairly high level of technical skill.

He was worried that Ning’an Group might not have the R&D capabilities for it.

However, Qi Yue also said that given how proactive Gu Qingran was being, he would have a detailed talk with the man.

A little after 5:00 PM, Yu Zhiming received a call from Dr. Cui Zhitan of the general surgery department.

He said that the kidney transplant specialist, Dr. Wu Xi, had agreed to perform the surgery for the elderly father to donate a kidney to his son.

Teacher Cui then gave Yu Zhiming the phone number of one of Dr. Wu Xi’s students and told him to have the kidney transplant patient contact the student directly.

Just as Yu Zhiming was rejoicing, he received another piece of good news.

Dr. Cui had gotten his hands on a fresh liver cancer specimen and asked if he wanted to come over and study it.

Yu Zhiming quickly informed Dr. Qi before scampering off to the general surgery department.

When he arrived and met Dr. Cui, Yu Zhiming first had to examine the three guys before he was given the chance to study the liver cancer specimen.

He became so absorbed in his research that he lost all track of time, only leaving the hospital close to 9:00 PM.

Because Yu Xiangwan and that young assistant of hers had gone out, a starving Yu Zhiming returned to his apartment in Zijin Garden to find no dinner waiting for him this time.

Fortunately, there were dumplings in the fridge.

Though Yu Zhiming rarely cooked, he was still capable of boiling water for dumplings.

While the water was heating up, Yu Zhiming received a message from Zhou Mo, who told him that the Ministry of Health’s investigation team had published their report about him on the official websites of both the Ministry of Health and Huashan Hospital.

Yu Zhiming hurriedly opened the hospital’s website and clicked on the investigative notice marked with a "NEW" tag, titled "Regarding the Talent Acquisition Qualifications of Dr. Yu Zhiming of Huashan Hospital."

He first skimmed through the general contents of the notice and let out a long sigh of relief.

’Just as I thought. The investigation team holds me in pretty high regard.’

The notice began by introducing Yu Zhiming’s personal history.

This introduction, while seemingly brief, gave readers a deep impression of one key fact.

He, Yu Zhiming, was born into a rural family in Liyang County, Lu Province.

Most importantly, he had been blinded in a serious accident at the age of two.

At thirteen, his vision began to slowly recover.

At fifteen, his eyesight had basically returned to a normal level.

At seventeen, he was admitted to Jishui Medical College.

From the ages of twenty-two to twenty-six, he worked at Liyang County First People’s Hospital and was promoted to attending physician.

The notice also stated that after a multi-pronged investigation, the team found no evidence of any illicit activities such as power-for-money deals, bribery, or abuse of power for personal gain during Huashan Hospital’s talent acquisition assessment and hiring process for Dr. Yu Zhiming.

The investigation team also endorsed the evaluation of Dr. Yu Zhiming by Huashan Hospital’s Talent Acquisition Review Committee.

Although Dr. Yu’s academic credentials were not distinguished and his experience was not vast, he possessed auscultation, percussion, and fetal position adjustment skills that others could not replicate. He also possessed a gift for medical perception and a potential for development that were difficult for others to match.

Dr. Yu was a medical talent highly sought after by the hospital.

After a review, the investigation team unanimously concluded that the talent and potential Dr. Yu Zhiming possessed were more than sufficient to justify the high-level talent acquisition package he received from Huashan Hospital.

In fact, one could say it was well-deserved, if not more so.

Appended to the notice were the cases Yu Zhiming had diagnosed during this period, along with some of the stories associated with them.

For example, the heart disease patient who had first caught Qi Yue’s attention, and the patient whose case resulted in Yu Zhiming being beaten until his face was swollen.

There were also some of the cases he had diagnosed after joining Huashan Hospital. Even the incident from the day before, where his diagnostic sketches in the outpatient and emergency departments had caused a stir among his colleagues, was mentioned.

What surprised Yu Zhiming even more was that...

The notice also included photos of signed, handwritten letters from Dr. Liu Yun, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Huashan Hospital; Dr. Xi Zhen, an Ob/Gyn expert from Jinling Gulou Hospital; and Dr. Tong Ting, Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ning’an Hospital.

In their letters, they praised Yu Zhiming as the foremost expert in fetal position adjustment in the country...

After finishing his simple dinner, Yu Zhiming returned to his bedroom and began to scroll with great interest through the netizens’ reactions to the notice.

He was happy to discover that most of them had stopped calling him an illegitimate son and a second-generation doctor with a powerful background. Instead, they were praising him as a medical genius with a superlative ability to learn.

Many netizens expressed regret, saying that if Dr. Yu had studied for just one more year, getting into prestigious schools like Peking Union Medical College or Binhai Medical College would have been a walk in the park.

Quite a few others suggested that Dr. Yu needed to pursue further studies, because in the medical world, which was full of PhDs, a bachelor’s degree was a major handicap.

Seeing this, Yu Zhiming quickly registered an alternate account and leaked some "inside information" under the guise of being one of his former classmates.

In his post, written in a tone full of sympathy, he claimed that his classmate Yu Zhiming had once applied for graduate school at Jingda Medical School. During the final interview round, two out of the three candidates would be chosen.

The final result was that his exceptionally talented classmate, despite scoring over twenty points higher than the second-place candidate and over fifty points higher than the third-place candidate in the preliminary exam, was eliminated.

Just as Yu Zhiming sent the post, he heard a noise from the living room.

He opened his bedroom door and was immediately hit by the strong smell of alcohol.

Then, he saw his fourth sister dump a whimpering Gu Qingning, who was dressed in a small t-shirt and denim shorts, onto the sofa.

"Sis, how much did you two drink? Don’t forget you’re in a special period right now."

Yu Xiangwan wiped the fine beads of sweat from her forehead and said with frustration, "I barely drank anything."

"This young lady acted so bold at the beginning, I thought she could really hold her liquor."

"I didn’t expect that after just two or three small bottles of beer, she’d end up like this."

Just then, Gu Qingning struggled to sit up.

She waved her arms, her eyes still squeezed shut, and roared, "I’m not drunk! I can still drink!"

"Sister Xiang Wan, let’s keep drinking."

Yu Xiangwan shot the young woman a sidelong glance, then tugged at her own clothes, which had grown uncomfortably sticky.

"Fifth Brother, can you watch her for me for a bit?"

"I need to take a quick shower and change. I feel so gross and sticky."

Yu Zhiming grunted in agreement. After his fourth sister had grabbed a change of clothes and gone into the bathroom, he walked over to Gu Qingning.

The girl was sprawled bonelessly on the sofa in a lazy slouch, with no regard for her image.

Looking down from his standing position, Yu Zhiming could catch a glimpse of the tempting scenery within her fairly well-filled t-shirt.

Yu Zhiming quickly forced his gaze back to her face.

Her flushed cheeks were streaked with strands of dark hair, and more of her lovely locks hung down, half-covering her forehead.

Her phoenix eyes were narrowed to slits.

Her small, crimson lips were pouted like a mouth-watering cherry, making one feel an uncontrollable urge to take a bite.

Yu Zhiming extended two fingers of his right hand and pressed them against her carotid artery to feel her pulse.

After confirming that the girl was fine, Yu Zhiming turned to get her a glass of water.

However, the moment he turned, Gu Qingning silently and nimbly got to her feet.

Her eyes were as bright as cold stars, without the slightest trace of drunkenness.

She tiptoed two steps after Yu Zhiming, her eyes darting around. She bit her lip, then stuck her fingers down her own throat...

Gu Qingning’s cheeks immediately puffed out, and her whole body leaped, aiming for Yu Zhiming’s back...

Suddenly, Yu Zhiming sidestepped to the left.

Gu Qingning pounced on empty air...

The next moment, her body made firm and intimate contact with the floor.

Aside from a pervasive numbness, she couldn’t feel a thing. She tried to move, but couldn’t.

At the same time, the contents of Gu Qingning’s mouth—and her stomach—came churning out like a violent, churning sea.

"What was that?" Yu Xiangwan’s voice came from the bathroom.

"She slipped and fell. And she threw up."

Gu Qingning thought she could detect a hint of schadenfreude in that detestable guy’s voice.

But she was in no mood to dwell on it.

In all her life, Gu Qingning had never been so humiliated.

She wanted to pretend to have fainted, but her face was currently submerged in her own vomit.

Then, Gu Qingning heard the most terrifying sound she could imagine at that moment.

The click of a phone’s camera shutter...
